About the property

Farmhouse in St Aubin, Nr. Villeneuve sur Lot, Lot et Garonne, Aquitaine, France - Peaceful and secluded location 15 Minutes Walk From Village

Espere is a traditional ‘longueur’ built farmhouse over 200 years old and was probably the dowager house to the adjoining fruit farm. The property was restored from a ruin in 2001 and has been since brought to a high standard retaining many original features and providing an excellent level of comfort with accommodation for up to two families. Situated close to the medieval towns of Penne D'Agenais, Monflanquin, and Villeneuve Sur Lot, the property lies on the outskirts of the village of St Aubin famous for its annual prune fair. The house is surrounded by beautiful countryside with unparalleled views of prune and cherry orchards and within easy reach of many traditional French country markets, excellent restaurants and historical places of interest. Bergerac airport is an easy 45 mins. Bordeaux and Toulouse airports are 2 hours’ drive. Agen and its TGV stop from Paris (4 hours) is a 45 minutes drive. The Channel ports are 9-10 hours driving. There is a large barn and a secluded 1 acre garden.

About Guy and Torill Dodgson

We have owned Espere for just over 13 years and have enjoyed restoring the property to a comfortable standard. We live in the UK but use the property several weeks of the year and have a lot of friends and acquaintances in the local neighbourhood. We are professional people working in academia, research and art. Our children and grandchildren also love the property for its freedom and space. The adjoining fields are like an extension of our garden (but we don’t have to tend them!) and it is a joy to observe the seasons and the French agriculture.

Guy and Torill Dodgson purchased this house in 2003

Why Guy and Torill Dodgson chose Lot-et-Garonne

We were attracted to this region because it is relatively unspoilt and tranquil. Some friends who had settle here introduced us to the area. We love the property because of its magnificent open views and secluded location. St Aubin has all the amenities you need and yet access to elsewhere is easy. Monflanquin has a pleasant community, good bars and restaurants and during the summer there are many attractions.

What makes this house unique

For us we see the property as a bolt-hole for ultimate relaxation. We are often here in the winter which is ultra quiet. The wood burning stove heats the entire house and we are very snug and comfortable.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We have had a lovely week at the farmhouse. It was incredibly hot but your beautiful pool made everything just right! You must be incredibly proud of the results of your labours as the house and grounds are really lovely".

"We had a fantastic holiday thank you. It was a real pleasure to stay in your wonderful house which is so beautifully decorated and thoroughly equipped. The pool was amazing, the kids and I were never out of it and the weather was great."

Fabulous place for a family to spend time together

  • 5 of 5

The perfect place to unwind and recharge - Espere is situated in a beautiful spot and the open views from the terrace are worthy of painting! It is easy to quickly feel 'at home' here as the owners have equipped the house with everything needed to enjoy a self catering holiday. The quality of the furnishings and decor is high and equal to a boutique hotel. The pool is perfect too!

Highly recommended

Lovely, well equipped house (feels very homely and not like a hired gite but like a proper home). Pool was very clean and just the right size; being in close proximity to the house meant it was great for watching little ones in the pool too. The surrounding countryside was like something from a painting. My kids had so much fun jumping on the top of the hay bales which were all lined up ready to be collected. Very relaxing, get away from it all location and yet only 15k from Villeneuve Sur Lot. Would definitely stay again and would not hesitate to recommend it. Owner was very helpful. Thanks Guy and Torill.

Why move from such a fantastic spot

  • 5 of 5

What an amazing house - we had the most fantastic stay at Espere and we just loved everything about it, we didn't even need to move all week !!

Espere was wonderfully equipped and we loved all the DVDs, games and books on offer (croquet is our new favourite game!) . The pool was wonderful and kept its heat really well. The linens and decor were also really lovely and the house felt very homely and comfortable (beds really comfy) and we spent most of the days by the pool and on the wonderful veranda which was always just the perfect temperature.

We thought it was an idyllic spot - the view really was fab and we basically didn't move all week !!!

Perfectly situated family holiday home

  • 5 of 5

Fabulous house in the most perfect spot for days out or just relaxing by the pool. We have been to Espere for a few years now and as a family we just love it. Completely equips with everything nescesary for the perfect family holiday but big enough to share with friends too.

Ideally located for days out, a short drive to, what my children call the "Water park" Piscine Malbentre in Pujols, a fabulous new riding school to the south side of Saint Aubin. And for trips up to the Dordogne for canoeing and sightseeing.

We love Espere and would recommend it to anyone, the addition of the verandah has made such a difference to the house and makes it possible to enjoy the outside what ever the weather.

We hope to return soon

Blissful Rural Setting

  • 4 of 5

Our adult family of six thoroughly enjoyed staying at Espere.

The pre breakfast walk through the sunflower fields to pick up croissants was a highlight of each day. We particularly enjoyed nearby towns of Montflaquin and Villeneuve-sur-lot and an excursion to Chateau Bourgeuil. Weather permitting, afternoons round the pool were hard to beat. I would have no hesitation in

recommending this property for a great getaway.

Perfect Retreat

  • 5 of 5

The farmhouse is the perfect retreat from the stresses of modern living. It has great views over the surrounding countryside and although in a hamlet very secluded.

The accommodation is well furnished and you have everything you need for a relaxing time.

It is well located for provisions, sight seeing or tours of the vineyards.

We will definitely be coming back in the future.
