The little house is tucked away in the centre of a medieval hill-top village, amongst the cobbled streets, set over 3 floors (entry at ground level, stairs to kitchen/living room, stairs to bedroom & bathroom). The bedroom is spacious and you can step through the double French doors onto the little balcony to look at the sleepy hillside. The only noise will be from the Roma train chugging round the hill bends a couple of times a day, and local villagers having a chat! This is NOT a tourist area - you'll need your phrase book - the accommodation has no Landline, TV, Internet or DVD - it's completely a 'get away from it all' break to get some rest and to discover cheap, quality food and coffee in the local restaurants and cafes. The beach towns and Pescara airport are about 40 mins drive, Rome is around 90 mins drive.
About the owner:

Mrs Rebecca Ramsden purchased this house in 2005
We were looking for a small house in Italy and chose Abruzzo because it was so much more reasonably priced than Tuscany. The region is so varied, from rolling fields of poppies and sunflowers in spring, to snow-capped mountains. Our hill-top location is a bit of both! We fell for the village and the property's location right by the castle walls.
We love the local restaurants, the excellent priced food and wine, but most of all we love the fact that it's really 'rustic' - basic accommodation in a tucked away village location. We enjoy a drive to the 'local' lake Lago di Scanno - it takes around 40 minutes to drive but it's worth it for the amazing scenery on the way, and to sit on the lakeside pebble beach with a glass of Prosecco.
“We were very comfortable and felt very much at home. Went to the Pizzeria/Hotel a few times and found this to be very useful, nice to have a facility like this in a small village”
“my boots ringing on those cobblestone was like going back in time“
Lovely little house in a picturesque, traditional Italian village. Beautifully clean, well equipped. Huge comfy bed with a fabulous view. Nice modern bathroom with good shower. So peaceful and unspoilt. Bar Centrale provided lovely espressos and was a great place to sit out and watch the village. The bakery was open at 8.30am every morning for fresh baked croissants and delicious Italian pastries. Great base to explore surrounding areas. Day trips to Scanno (very pretty town and Lake Scanno (take your towel and sunbathe the day away), Sulmona (buy some confetti) and L'Aquila.
Il Girasole restaurant in the village is lovely as is Bar De Lisa in Castel di Leri, about 4 miles away, run by Carla who speaks English.
I would highly recommend this property, the owner was helpful and gave us information before we went and it was a perfect place for a get away.
We were very impressed with the cleanliness, value for money, facilities and location of this property. It was beautifully situated in a lovely mountain village and very central for visiting the different national parks in the area. The owner was friendly and helpful and provided a useful contact in case of problems who proved very helpful when the electricity went off (just a temporary problem). Would recommend this location for a couple who like an away from it all holiday as this is a very quiet location and is particularly suitable for hikers as there are many glorious walks nearby. A very enjoyable holiday.
We had a wonderful time staying at this property. The owner couldn't have been more helpful, providing us with a map, advice and directions. The property was in a fantastic location with incredible views over the valley from the bedroom balcony. It was also spotlessly clean and really well equipped. We'd recommend both the restaurants in the village, and also the (fish only) restaurant 'da Gianni' in the nearest village, Raiano. Eating out is very cheap and the local food and wine is great. The area is full of things to do, including for children, from taking a boat out onto the beautiful Lago di Scanno to hiking along the many well marked trails in the Majella National Park. Highly recommended!
