Why JOHN LEADER chose Lyme Regis and West Dorset

.

What makes this cottage unique

When we moved in, in May 2006, the properties needed some immediate substantial repairs. The origins of the house are uncertain, but the main house originates from at least the 17th Century, and possibly earlier. Orchard Cottage is an extension to the main house and The Bothy was an old coach house and stable, with hay loft above. They are both at least 200 years old.

The main house which was originally thatched, is of stone construction, the brick facia at the front was added approximately 150 years ago. The two new houses to the left of West Hill House were built on what was originally the walled vegetable garden for the house.

Lovely accommodation

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Hursey Gate Stables for one week with our two dogs.

The accommodation is of a really good standard, being a very well renovated stable block with a lovely light open plan feel. Inside are all mod cons including a well equipped kitchen (with dishwasher and washing machine), comfortable sofas, broadband at a small additional cost and Sky TV. The shower had excellent water pressure. Owner John is friendly and welcoming and helpful basics are provided such as dishwasher tablets, milk, tea towels, and hand wash by the sinks.

Our favourite aspect was the rear of the stables. French doors open onto a decked veranda, small stock fenced garden area and views over the paddock. This is occupied by friendly and inquisitive sheep, pygmy goats and pot bellied pigs, who can be fed.

Broadwindsor is a lovely village with good road access to many tourist sites as well as beautiful quiet countryside walks right from the front door. There is a useful shop and pub in short walking distance.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would come again.

Relaxed and Rustic Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a lovely break at Hursey Gate with our two young children aged two and three. The stables were a great mix of homely furnishings with high quality modern fixtures and fittings. The children loved feeding the animals over the back garden fence and John and Elaine and their children couldn't have been more welcoming. We were very lucky with the weather and spent three days of our week long break at Lyme Regis, which has a great soft sandy beach. We would definitely highly recommend this accommodation, and plan to return as soon as possible. The discount offered on return visitors makes a good value break all the better.

Fabulous!

  • 5 of 5

Simply the best equipped and most comfortable holiday let yet. I was there with my Mother and our 2 dogs and it was fabulous for all of us (including the dogs!) We had packed washing up liquid and loo roll as so often you arrive and there is none. David and Elaine had simply thought of everything and there was nothing that lacked either in the kitchen or elsewhere. The cottage is in a beautiful setting backing onto their field with sheep, pigs and goats. You can hear a pin drop outside and walk the dogs from the front door. A lovely welcome awaits you and a very useful informative folder full of information about the area and the places to visit. We had a fabulous break
