Guestbook comments from the owner

The Bothy; An amazingly equipped cottage, everything you would expect and much more. The lay out worked well with plenty of space for all of us. Hospitality was exceptional, the owners and their delightful children allowing us interaction with their animals, even when the sheep were lambing. Location for us was ideal. The local pub served great food at very reasonable prices. There is nothing negative I can say about this cottage or its location.

Orchard cottage; This is the best cottage we have ever stayed in. The house is beautiful, spacious, warm and cosy and tastefully decorated and really well stocked with kitchen equipment, books, toys and games. It was just wonderful waking up and being able to wander down to see the goats, pigs and lambs in the garden. The location is brilliant.

Hursey Gate Stables;Simply the best equipped and most comfortable holiday let yet. David and Elaine had simply thought of everything and there was nothing that lacked either in the kitchen or elsewhere.

Simply Perfect!

A truly fantastic holiday cottage.

We returned home today and have total holiday blues. This is a delightful property in stunning surroundings.

A perfect stay with fantastic facilities and an amazingly well equipped kitchen.

The animals are great. Our 4 year old was devastated to leave them behind. He'd now like a goat like odd spot!

Was great to be shown around by Elaine and introduced to the animals. It made our little ones day getting to feed the lambs. Rosie and Ryan are delightful and were great with our boys. Thank you to you all.

Keep up the good work, your properties are fab!!!!

See you next year.

Orchard Cottage

We visited for the second year running. Orchard Cottage was as good as Hursey Gate had been the previous year. The cottage is warm, welcoming and extremely well equipped. David & Elaine are wonderful, hardworking hosts. It has been our pleasure to stay.

Perfect Place for Family Get-togethers

  • 5 of 5

Just back from a brilliant week at the Bothy.

All 9 of us (3 generations) had an amazing time.

David, Elaine, Ryan and Rosie made us truly welcome.

The grandchildren loved the animals and the use of the slide and trampoline.

Every room beautifully decorated, all the kitchen utensils you could want, a BBQ in the lovely private garden, lovely little village with shop, craft centre (serves the most gorgeous food) and a pub.

Nothing too much trouble to make our stay great, even lending Daniel some superhero Dvd's, on top of the extensive range to be found in the cottage. Hope to visit again one day.

Wonderful Holiday

  • 5 of 5

From our arrival at the Bothy we were made to feel extremely welcome and that nothing would be too much trouble. It is situated in a wonderful area for walking and a short drive to the coastal walks and beaches as well. There is a good pub and village shop and loads of great eating places all over the area.

Five adults, a toddler and baby stayed for a week so it was great to have either an ensuite shower room or bathroom with every bedroom. Although we did not need them because the weather was so brilliant there was a TV and DVD player in every bedroom as well as the lounge plus a separate iPod docking station in the lounge and a radio (much appreciated by the cook) in the kitchen (and bedrooms).

The kitchen was extremely well-equipped with more than enough cutlery and crockery and a far better of pans than I have at home!

The farm animals were much appreciated by the grandchildren who have requested a return visit already! There was a great chestful of toys and games for them to play with and lots of maps and guidebooks for us to browse.

Furnishings and fittings were maybe a little tired but that suited us as we did not have to feel ‘on edge’ worrying about damaging anything. The Bothy may not be everyone’s cup of tea but we thought it was great for a family holiday and, best of all, the owners are both amicable and helpful. We will definitely return.

Perfection in Dorset

  • 5 of 5

Five of us (two couples and a dog) have just returned from a wonderful week in The Bothy. From start to finish the experience has been nothing short of fabulous. Situated in the small but perfectly formed village of Broadwindsor, where there's a great local pub (The White Lion) serving fresh, tasty pub grub and a delightfully friendly community local shop. The surrounding countryside is beautiful. All you can see is green. All you can hear are sheep, cows and the birds singing. The Bothy itself is absolutely charming with a real country cottage feel. It's wonderfully well equipped and everything was spotless, comfortable and it felt like a real home from home. The Leader family who live next door are very welcoming and helpful without being intrusive. They also have a menagerie of delightful animals. One of our favourite pastimes while we were there was going to feed the goats, Vietnamese pot bellied pigs and the friendly ewes in the field. It's been an incredibly chilled out and relaxing week, despite the fact that we've experienced all four seasons weather-wise! The weather however didn't stop us from enjoying the surrounding areas of West Bay, Bridport (great market on Saturdays), Lyme Regis (a seaside resort not to be missed) and if you want to treat yourself book in for lunch at Hix Oyster & Fish House which serves fabulous fish with an amazing view over Lyme Bay and the Jurassic Coastline. We nipped over the border to Devon to Seaton and stopped off for a great pub lunch in the picturesque village-by-the-sea of Beer at The Anchor. On our last night we visited The New Inn in the nearby village of Stoke Abbott. Amazing! The food and service were fantastic. It's more 'gastro pub food' than The White Lion with prices to reflect that. However the food was beautifully cooked and prepared. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending a holiday in this gorgeous cottage in an incredibly picturesque part of the country. You do need to have a car unless you don't want to venture further than the village. And there's a downstairs bedroom, which is great for anyone unable to climb stairs. I can't wait to go back!!

Facilities

From the Owner

When we moved in, in May 2006, the properties needed some immediate substantial repairs. The origins of the house are uncertain, but the main house originates from at least the 17th Century, and possibly earlier. Orchard Cottage is an extension to the main house and The Bothy was an old coach house and stable, with hay loft above. They are both at least 200 years old. The main house which was originally thatched, is of stone construction, the brick facia at the front was added approximately 150 years ago. The two new houses to the left of West Hill House were built on what was originally the walled vegetable garden for the house.
