Why JOHN LEADER chose Broadwindsor

.

What makes this cottage unique

When we moved in, in May 2006, the properties needed some immediate substantial repairs. The origins of the house are uncertain, but the main house originates from at least the 17th Century, and possibly earlier. Orchard Cottage is an extension to the main house and The Bothy was an old coach house and stable, with hay loft above. They are both at least 200 years old.

The main house which was originally thatched, is of stone construction, the brick facia at the front was added approximately 150 years ago. The two new houses to the left of West Hill House were built on what was originally the walled vegetable garden for the house.

Brilliant cottage in stunning area of Dorset.

  • 5 of 5

Orchard Cottage is a lovely comfortable and very well equipped cottage in a lovely village in a most attractive part of Dorset.

The cottage is spacious and decorated and furnished in an attractive rustic manner suiting its period. Most importantly to us are the king size beds with superbly comfortable mattresses. The view from the main bedroom is wonderful, and a delight to sit in bed in the morning with a cup of tea looking out onto the village, and watching an array of birds including a pair of woodpeckers. All the equipment is high quality including very up to date Bosch dishwasher and washing machine. Flat screen TV,s in the bedrooms and sitting room.

We have a small dog who was made very welcome, and the nearby town of Beaminster is very dog friendly with two pubs and two Cafes welcoming them.

Only a short drive to the beach, our favourite is Burton Bradstock as there is a huge part of the shingle beach that is dog friendly all year.

John and Elaine are extremely friendly and helpful and readily available if needed.

We have stayed three times before in their property in Beaminster, Albert Cottage, and this is also of a very high standard, and thoroughly recommended.

Always go to Lyme Regis when in Dorset, and recommend the Royal Lion hotel for a drink and lunch.

We are very pleased to recommend Orchard Cottage, and Albert cottage.

Peter, Rhona, Catherine and our little dog Rufus who loves the garden.

MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS!

  • 5 of 5

As soon as I step into the cottage I smile, it truly is a home from home, stone and wood floors, traditional furniture perfectly mixed with comfortable beds, powerful showers and Sky TV. The welcoming pack of tea, coffee, milk, biscuits are a lovely and pleasant surprise. Although we stayed for a couple of days last summer it is still fun to explore and each room has its own special feel, mixing the traditional with modern comfort. Outside my 10 yr old daughter makes quick and renewed friendship with the three goats at the bottom of the private garden.

The cottage is picture perfect, as is the village of Broadwindsor. A pub, a community general store, a craft centre and café all a short walk from the cottage. Lewesdon Hill, the highest in Dorset is opposite the entrance to the cottage and is well worth an afternoon stroll to discover a magical wood and breathtaking views across Dorset.

David and Elaine the owners manage to strike the right balance of being there when you need them, but leaving you to your own space and time.

West Bay is about 20 minutes drive away, a pebbly beach and golden cliff familiar to anyone who watched Broadchurch. Crabbing around the harbour is a great way to spend a late afternoon, early evening. Lyme Regis is within easy reach. A traditional English seaside resort pretty shops, cafes and a local brewery lead down to a lovely bay, safe to paddle and swim.

David, Elaine, Ryan, Rosie and Barley the dog give you a big booming welcome when you arrive, it puts a smile on your face and it doesn't leave until its time to go home - still there is always next year...

Wonderful Cottage, Wonderful Holiday!

  • 5 of 5

"Wonderful Cottage, Wonderful Hosts, Wonderful Holiday"

We knew when we booked Orchard Cottage for our one week stay that it was going to be special, but wow it was even better than the pictures. On arrival we were welcomed by Elaine and Barley, the family's gorgeous dog. Elaine showed us into the cottage, where she had left some wonderful biscuits, tea and milk which were much appreciated after our long journey. We arrived on 5th July at the start of the heatwave, but the house stayed lovely and cool with all the windows open. Sadly the conservatory was too hot to sit in so we did not make use of this, but this wasn't a problem as the garden is just so lovely and peaceful to sit in. Our 16 month old dog Pebbles saw the garden as one big adventure. We made the most of the sunshine and went out every day - so many places to visit within an hour of the cottage. Thank you David for recommending Burton Bradstock, a lovely stretch of beach where we could take Pebbles, and to Elaine for telling us about Forde Abbey and Gardens; I had read about the latter and had dismissed this but after speaking to Elaine we decided to visit and we are so glad we did - such beautiful gardens. We could not go in the house as dogs were not permitted, but we all enjoyed the gardens. What a gem, and only 15 mins drive form the cottage. We went to Corfe Castle, Durdle Door, Portland Lighthouse, Seatown to name a few of the places we visited, Tired at the end of each day out, we returned to our home from home to have a wonderful shower - the water pressure was fantastic. Finally we would collapse into the most comfortable bed giving a good nights sleep ready for the following days adventure. We hope to visit again next year and we know come rain or shine we will have another brilliant time at Orchard cottage. Thank you again Elaine and David for being excellent hosts. We really did have a 5 star holiday at your cottage.
