My wife and I live in the UK, in Camberley, Surrey. For twenty years now we have owned and rented out a number of beachside apartments in Central Fuengirola overlooking the Marina, and as Smiths for Spain, together with our property managing partners in Spain, we have also introduced many thousands of happy clients to a large number of other similar privately owned studio, one, and two bedroomed apartments in Central Fuengirola.

In addition, since 2002, together with our own Manager Jeff we have also introduced many clients to a smaller number of privately owned studio, one, and two bedroomed apartments in Benalmadena, Arroyo de la Miel where Jeff lives.

Good accommodation in the centre of Fuengirola

Excellent apartment, right in the centre of Fuengirola, just off the main promenade. Marina directly opposite the apartment complex. Beaches a few minutes walk either side of the marina. Endless bars and restaurants all within a short walk from the apartments. Plenty of bars and restaurants also in tree lined back streets and squares.

Apartment has all the required amenities, plenty of cooking utensils, micowave and hob if wanted to "cook in" but didn't bother as there were that many restaurants catering for every taste and every pocket, from fast food to top end dining. Balcony in a good spot for watching fishing boats coming and going in harbour, and views out across the sea and promenade.

The Feria festival just started as we were leaving. Massive festival at the back of the resort with fireworks, fairground rides and Spanish dressed in traditional flamenco dresses, etc.

We last visited Fuengirola a couple of years ago and there has been a lot of investment in improving the resort. Some of the work is still on going but did not intrude on our holiday. It appears a lot of the old fashioned hotels/ apartment blocks have been pulled down on the front and replaced with new hotels and apartments and a lot of the side roads have been improved and new bars and restaurants have sprung up down these roads.

We have found different parts of Fuengirola this time round and still loads more to discover. It is a perfect location for holidays especially in October as the sun is still warm enough to sun bathe but not stifling hot. Warm enough at night for shirt and shorts. Good mix of people in resort from young to old and a fair proportion of golfing groups. Did not see any trouble the whole time and was safe to walk around the back streets at night finding new bars and restaurants.

Only down side which in the end turned out fine is, if you have a weekend night flight, the Spanish Office is closed, so we could not leave our suitcases there when we checked out of the apartment. We don't think we were supposed to use the hotel luggage room, but we were in luck as one of the hotel guests had requested the key for the luggage room so we slipped our suitcases in whilst they were there.

One suggestion for the owners - it may be worthwhile considering investing in a safe for the apartment. We carried our money/passports around with us all week, on the off chance the apartment was broken in to.

Overall an excellent holiday.

Apart from the ideal location, you will not be surprised to learn that this front line, South West facing apartment in a 4 Star Hotel overlooking the Marina, with the beach on either side, is also a very popular apartment for the many other reasons that you will have quite clearly discovered and enjoyed; being close to all amenities including restaurants, cafes, bars, shops and supermarkets; and it is also only 300 metres or so from the bus and railway stations. We are sure that you too, will now readily agree that Fuengirola does rightly deserve its reputation amongst those in the know as the best kept secret on the Costa del Sol !

Good apartment - but...

The apartment was good - clean, if a little "tired". ( kitchenette drawer-front missing; a shower door displaced from its runners; and the shower perhaps clean, but not deep-clean). The location (3rd floor close to a lift, and east-facing) was good; but our stay was spoilt a little by major road works immediately outside which carried on from 08:00-20:00 daily during the 2nd, 3rd and final week of our stay. This rendered the balcony unusable because of the noise and dust. (I thought it was unfortunate that this planned work was not made known to us at the time of booking).

The location was ideal for access to the beach, bars, restaurants etc. but some may find its proximity to some all-night discos across the street an inconvenience - we didn't because that noise was effectively reduced by the balcony doors, and further by the fact that the bedroom is located away from the balcony.

Owner's Response: We are glad that you liked the apartment, and the added convenience of being centrally located in a 4 Star Hotel on the seafront, directly opposite the Marina, and only 2 minutes' walk away from the beach, restaurants, bars and supermarkets. The actual timing of the roadworks which you mention came as a total surprise to everyone including ourselves and you can rest assured that we would have forewarned you had we known in advance. Even so, your apartment is South West facing and on the other side of the Hotel to the roadworks entirely, and we are therefore a little surprised that the roadworks actually had any adverse effect on your stay in the apartment itself at all, other than of course, when you entered and left the Hotel through the main entrance. Nevertheless, we thank you sincerely for your welcome and helpful comments. And to end on a high note, the roadworks are now almost complete and the improvements they have brought, both to the appearance of the Hotel frontage, and to the Hotel approaches, are truly impressive.

FUENGIROLA BEACH & PLACES OF INTEREST JUST A WALK AWAY:

The wonderful soft sandy beach is directly opposite your apartment and just seconds away!

The Promenade, also directly opposite, is 7 kilometres (5 miles) long, wide and FLAT, just perfect for those memorable strolls in the sun. There are frequent part shaded resting places so that you can sit and admire the lovely sea & beach views.

In the evening the beaches are floodlit and everything appears quite magical! This is the perfect time to have a 'nightcap' in one of the many cafe/restaurants built literally on the beach.

Within 2 minutes' walk you can take a trip on a glass bottomed boat looking for dolphins. Just up the road is the Fuengirola Zoo and the Giant Water Park (Parque Acuatico Mijas).

In the Marina opposite there is a "World of Watersports" available including Parasailing, Scuba Diving, Jet Skiing and much more.

Also nearby is the Miramar Shopping Centre which is a large modern covered shopping complex with cinemas (many films shown in English) and cafes.

There is a local market on a Tuesday and a 'flea market' (second-hand market) on Saturday, both within walking distance.

FUENGIROLA RESTAURANTS, CAFES & BARS:

2 minutes' walk to a large number of restaurants, cafes, bars, fast food outlets, supermarkets and shops. The restaurant area is known as 'Fish Alley' where you can get a 3 course meal from about 8 Euros or £7.

TRANSPORT & AMAZINGLY CHEAP TRANSFER:-

Fly to Malaga Airport - Fuengirola is just 15 miles / 24 km from the airport.

Train: The modern, well signposted, airport train station is now INSIDE Malaga airport / about £2 fare to FUENGIROLA train station / frequency every 20 minutes / about 25 minutes journey time (lovely scenic route) / then about a 5 minutes’ walk (about 350 metres) and you are at your apartment.

Taxi: approx £30-35 each way / about 20 minutes.

Bus & Train Stations: within 5 minutes' (350 metres) walk from your apartment. These services are cheap, efficient and easy to use.

Car not necessary - a short walk to every amenity.

Car Parking: if required, there are lots of very local car parks available / details emailed on request.

THERE ARE LOTS OF LOCAL PLACES OF INTEREST:

Benalmadena: 8km - 10 minutes by car / 15 minutes by local bus or train.

Mijas: 10km - 10 minutes by car / 20 minutes by local bus.

Marbella & Puerto Banus: 20km - 20 minutes by car / 40 minutes by local bus.

Malaga: (including airport) 24km - 20 minutes by car / 30 minutes by local bus or train.

Mijas - easily accessible by local bus: Mijas is a pretty 9th century Andalucian village with craft shops, cafes and the well known donkey taxis. Mijas nestles on the mountainside with landscaped viewing platforms and seating for you to look over the spectacular coastline below.

Malaga - easily accessible by local bus or train: The city of Malaga boasts the world famous Picasso Museum. Other places of interest are the comprehensive shopping centre, the Cathedral, the Castle and the Port.

Benalmadena - easily accessible by local bus or train: Benalmadena has a "mini Disney World" with stage shows (Tivoli World).

Opposite Tivoli World is the exciting cable car ride (Teleferica) which will take you to the top of the mountain!

Benalmadena has a very impressive new Marina development offering boat trips, restaurants, colourful shops and boutiques.

If you fancy diving beneath the sea without getting wet there is the Sea Life Centre and if you would also like to see a dolphin show then the Selwo Marina is a must.

THERE ARE MANY 1-DAY CONDUCTED COACH TRIPS:-

Gibraltar - very popular for shoppers looking for tax free goods.

Nerja – a seaside town with famous caves.

Ronda – a picturesque ancient town set way up in the mountains.

For the more adventurous there are trips to places like Sevilla and Granada. And, just across the water to exotic Tangier in North Africa!
