A wonderful holiday

  • 5 of 5

Debbie and Martyn Wright, the owners of the villa, are very friendly, helpful, reliable and professional people to deal with. It was a real pleasure doing business with them.

The villa is absolutely lovely with an awesome, wind-protected first floor terrace.

The house has all amenities in excellent order and is very spacious. A truly wonderful “home from home“. It was very clean and well-maintained. Helpful to know that the Paradise Beach reception would take care of any questions that might arise.

The motto of the island is “no stress“. This really works. Especially with 14 days of sunshine!

In Santa Maria there are excellent restaurants: Atlantis, Chez Pastis and the restaurant at the hotel Odjo d‘Agua. You might want to precede dinner with some Caipirinhas at Palm Beach.

Our taxi driver was Silvino (002389985527). He will do almost anything for guests. If he cannot come himself, he‘ll send a friend.

He helped us to buy fresh fish at the pier at local rates.

He can organise an island tour with his friend Ildo. It takes for as long as you wish and he is your guide/driver for the day. The car is a Landcruiser Prado. Costs 100 euros plus tips.

We recommend this trip highly.

Furthermore, you should not miss floating in the old salt mines. The salt content of the water is as dense as in the Dead Sea. Great fun outing!

Amazing is the genuine friendliness of the local Cape Verdians.

We loved it and will definitely be back!

Very quiet location in lovely grounds and on an OK beach.

  • 4 of 5

I am pleased we stayed here and I would stay again, but it will not be for everyone. We stayed in February half term and had the place pretty much to ourselves. The villa is on a development of privately owned villas and apartments, which is well maintained but the majority of properties are empty and half the development is unfinished, including the 2 villas opposite this one. The nearest pool was empty but 4 other pools were a short walk away. The pools were unheated and refreshing, but the children still went in! There is no longer an onsite shop or wifi, so you need to take a taxi into Santa Maria for all provisions and to connect with the outside world. The development is next to 3 or 4 all inclusive hotels, so there was life on the beach if you get lonely, but the hotels are not welcoming of non-residents. The villa itself was clean and had the basics. The upstairs balcony had sun on it most of the day (when the sun was out) and gives shelter from the wind. You can see the sea, but also it looks over the 2 unfinished villas, and there are no signs of them being completed.

The Development is walled in with security guards at the main gate and on the gate out to the beach. It is a short walk to the gate, but the beach at the gate is really scrubby sand dunes for the first 20m as you head to the sea and then you get to the proper sand. The shore line is pleasant to walk along with the bay being about 2km long, but there is generally worn coral paving at the shore line so it is not easy to swim from. This has been cleared in a small man made bay either side of the Bikini Beach pool complex that juts out from the shoreline, making an easy point to enter the water and for children to play in. Outside the hotels the beach is sand all the way up to the walkway that runs along the top of the beach with lots of regimented sun loungers. A far better and natural beach is Ponta Preta a 20-30 min walk past the hotels and over the headland, where there are 2 beach bars and miles of beautiful beach and shore line all the way to Santa Maria, which takes 1.5hrs to walk to via the beach from the villa.

The Island is very undeveloped and has a definite African feel. Santa Maria has a couple of small supermarkets where you can get the basics you need and there are a variety of restaurants. It is easy to organise taxis to get around, but i would have preferred to have more facilities within walking distance.

Great 2 weeks stay for 2 grandparents, 2 parents and 2 grandchildren last half of December

  • 4 of 5

I will follow the authors of the Bradt Cape Verde Guide, Colum Wilson and Aisling Irwin; introducing the term lowlights.

Lowlights of this Paradise Beach (Resort) Villa is that the area is not a "resort" compared to the ones you will find just across the street to the east. If you are expecting a full function resort, then this is not the place, for the time being. There were a few other visitors in other villas, but not many. There is no supermercado, no bars, no restaurants in the area.

We had a few electrical fall outs and the TV & Internet was out for a day, but nothing extraordinary. The upstairs toilet easily blocked when using toilet paper, worked fine with no paper.

Highlights then, is that there is a well functioning (workdaytime) reception for the guests, fluent in English; manned gates, gardeners, pool-boys, cleaners and a handyman at work workdays. The area appears well kept and clean. Even the tiled terraces in front of never lived-in villas were swept and kept. Pools are maintained and the pool-area swept and cleaned. We never felt unsafe, quite the opposite - we felt very safe and secure. Stray guards at night. Generally a country with a low crime rate.

The apartment worked fine. It is a solid house, good wooden inside doors had good noise reduction from upstairs and kitchen area to the ground floor bedroom. Nice for grandparents. Beds on the hard side, but ok for us. We A/C cooled down the bedrooms just before bedtime. Kitchen utensils on the short side of 6 residents, you just have to do the dishes more often. Limited tools for cooking dinner, spaghetti and tomato meat sauce was a success. We had breakfast at the front terrace every morning. A water cooker would be fine, but then again, a kettle also works. Not many insects, but a few; and a couple of friendly geckos. Cats wanted to sleep in the terrace chairs at night.

The beach area is just across the next row of houses, however there is a short detour to get there. The beach at the Bikini Beach Club worked fine for us and the kids, even with the heavy wind and waves we had for a couple of days.

We walked several times to the Ponta Preta beach restaurant for late lunch/early dinner. A great place for all of us. Good food and nice view. The kids could play in the sand while we sipped cold beer waiting for the food. Walk to the Dune afterwards. Angelo's and Palm Beach in Santa Maria also worked fine for us.

All in all we had a great time. Thank you for a nice stay.

Owner's Response: Hi Halvor Thank you for your review. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your holiday in Cape Vrde in our Villa. We have taken on board your comments and will ask the maintenance team to repair the toilet. I will also enquire why the bar was not open, it usually is at this time of year. Thank you again Martyn

great holiday

  • 4 of 5

The island of sal is an experience! I am extremely well travelled, and so I took it all in my stride but my daughters boyfriend was not so and it was interesting to see his reaction, firstly if you are staying in a villa there is not a lot of food to be had and it is expensive! meat is of very poor quality! eating out is great fun but be careful where you go as it can be expensive to cheap and anything in-between, Santa Maria is just down the road and is lively and entertaining you will get 'hassled' by traders but so long as you are firm with no thank you they do go away.

we hired a car and went to the blue eye not in my opinion worth it 5 euros each, the lemon sharks which was fantastic and so exciting we saw adults from a distance and the young ones around our feet!!!!

the salt mine is worth a visit again 5euros and you can bath in the waters

The house is nice and has one of everything you need but we spent very little time there as we went to the pool during the day generally had it to ourselves!and then of an evening we where out! we still managed to spend 100 euros on electricity so be very careful of the air conditioning, about the only criticism I would have of the house was that the beds where really hard for me (and I know that is my opinion)

Then the best part of the holiday was going to behind the Rui hotel and seeing the baby turtles this made it the best trip ever!!! loved every single second of that.

Just perfect

  • 5 of 5

We stayed 2 weeks from end of july 2017. The apartment was just as advertised. New build blocks the view of the sea but you are only 3 mins walk. Bikini Beach is lovely but you cant beat the experience of Santa Maria. You have all that you need in a less than 10 mins taxi drive. We were fortunate enough to experince turtles on a sunday as the bikini beach club wasnt on. The club music is fairly loud but we enjoyed it..... i would give this apartment 10/10. Could do with more plates bowls and pots and pans as a family we couldn't cook multiple dishes as there isnt enough pots. Would we return? In a heartbeat Yes Yes Yes Yes.

Villa very nice but location didn't match.

  • 2 of 5

As mentioned Villa very nice but on a resort with no facilities. In visitors book comments from two years ago report similar issues, no pool adjacent and views of building site not of ocean as advertised. It's a 5 minute walk not 75 steps to reach the beach.

One bar was open 'ish but no snacks and next to noisy repairs to empty main swimming pool so only went once. Whole development empty and no atmosphere rather like something from a post apocalyptic survivor film.

No information pack for visitors. Only by chance we found how to walk (hour +) north to a Turtle bay.

Swimming near villa only possible in a dedicated enclosed harbour (Bikini bar on promontory). Otherwise beaches always red flagged and unsafe.

Welcome pack. We were not told what the options were and went for premium just in case. It contained stuff we didn't want or need (like cornflakes) so suggest you check the price and contents to see if it's value for money.

Utilities- you mentioned this but they were not cheap. Suggest you get an estimate for the Wifi too.

Overall by improvising and being frugal we made the most of it.

Fine villa but resort needs work to create a holiday atmosphere.

Owner's Response: Hi Grahame Thank you for your very positive comments about our villa. I am sorry that that you were dissappointed with the resort. We do advise all guests that it is a quiet and relaxed resort and have had many positive reviews because of this. We also advise guests that during the low season services may be restricted and that some maintenance may be taking place. We do our best to keep our guests informed of costs and you were sent a list of items included in each welcome pack and the cost. Also outlined was the cost of wifi. We and many of our previous guests have enjoyed swimming from the local beach which is 75 paces from the villa. However, it can vary dependant on weather conditions and seasons so we are not able to guarantee that the sea will be calm at all times - I wish we could. However Bikini Beach, which is a 5 minute walk does provide a more safe swimming environment. We do not have an information pack in the villa as changes can happen and we are not in a position to amend it from the UK. However we did send you a document outlining things to do, taxis, restaurants, excursions, and more. I will pass on your comments to the resort.

About Martyn and Debbie Wright

I am a busy working Mum who values her time with my family - especially on holiday!! Our Villa is like coming home - as soon as I open the door I am relaxed and looking forward to a lovely time with my family - enjoying the Cape Verdean sunshine. The villa is comfortable, beautifully furnished with all the mod cons you could wish for. Plenty of space for all the family to chill out and we particularly look forward to early evening drinks on the patio before heading into Santa Maria for a meal.

We hope that you will enjoy our villa in Santa Maria as much as we do.

Martyn and Debbie Wright purchased this villa in 2012

Why Martyn and Debbie Wright chose Sal

The reason we chose to buy a villa in Sal was due to the fabulous climate - all year round sunshine - no rainy or hurricane season!! We have since discovered that the Island has so much to offer - the locals are so friendly, there is plenty to see and do. There are fabulous bars and restaurants and the most spectacular sandy beaches and turquoise sea!!

What makes this villa unique

The villa is just a short distance out of town which gives it a quiet, peaceful atmosphere but with access to all the amenities of Santa Maria which is only five minutes away. Paradise Beach is one of the largest resorts on the Island of Sal but with drive up accommodation, unusually large gardens and an abundance of space the resort is perfect for those looking for an undisturbed, uncrowded holiday, perfect for those wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday living.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Had a great time, very comfortable villa hope to come back just after Xmas. Regards Paul and gang.

Special interest holidays:

The winter months in particular make this resort a windsurf and kitesurf paradise. Due to their position within this winter trade wind belt the Cape Verde Islands boast near perfect windsurfing and kitesurfing conditions from late November to June. Sal is an awesome spot for Kitesurfing and is especially suited to the advanced risers and wave sailor.

This is an amazing surfing destination too & offers a great experience for first time surfers & experienced professionals. The surf is mostly reef breaks but you will find some comfortable beach breaks if sandy bottom is your preferred option. There are surf schools which will provide lessons over the sandy bottom surf breaks. Cape Verde is the home of Kite and wind surfing world champions who offer coaching to beginners and the more competent surfers.

If diving is for you there are brilliantly coloured parrot & trigger fish. In many areas around the islands one can observe big fish and large schools of fish relatively close to shore.

The nearest beach is just a stones throw from the villa and a 150 metre walk away through the resorts beach gate, the town beaches are a 5 minutes drive.

There is only one airport on Sal which is a 15 minute drive from the Villa. Car hire is available, however taxis are readily available and cheap.

Santa Maria is the nearest town which is a 5 minute drive away with a great choice of bars and restaurants and beaches. There is lots to see on Sal - all within a 30 minute drive from the villa. Pedra de Luna is fascinating - salt flats in the centre of a volcano - you can swim in the salt pools. Kite beach is well worth a visit to see the world champion kite surfers in action!!

Further Details:

Local shops, restaurants, supermarkets and banks are all within a 5 minute drive away in Santa Maria.
