3-bedroom Terraced Cottage In Snowdonia National Park 5 Miles From Betws-y-coed

Updated: 07-Oct-2016
Cottage in Dolwyddelan, Nr. Betws-y-Coed, Snowdonia National Park, North Wales, Wales - Peaceful Location Within Walking Distance Of Dolwyddelan Castle, Shop And Pub. View Of Snowdon.

Dolwyddelan village nestles under a breathtaking wilderness of mountain peaks, waterfalls, rivers and forests, wonderful for walking, climbing, bird watching, fishing, painting and photography. Its ruined castle (painted by Prince Charles) was probably the birthplace of Llewellyn the Great. Ty'r Delyn itself has been attractively created from two of a row of miners' cottages, about five minutes walk from the centre of the village. The cottage backs onto an enclosed garden by way of a footbridge over a small stream which tinkles down right beneath the rear windows. (Both footbridge and stream are securely fenced: naturally young children will need supervision.) From the garden you can view the surrounding mountains - Snowdon and Dolwyddelan Castle are visible on a clear day. A small patio allows a barbecue beside the stream.

Lovely cosy cottage "PERFECT"

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this cottage for 7 nights and I must say we did not experience any problems what so ever. Collecting the keys for the cottage from the village Spar shop was a doddle and straight forward.....we didn't need instructions or a map to find the cottage as we had already Google earthed it....all it takes is a little forward planning. When we arrived at the cottage it was warm and cosy and spotless, we suffered none of the problems stated in a previous review. We didn't have any problems with hot water either, we had hot water from the electric booster and in the evening we had hot water from the coal fire...simple. Free coal was handy and we did buy some kindle from the spar shop. the coal fire was fantastic. No damp in the cottage as far as I could tell and all the carpets were clean. The stream at the back was very nice and the garden gets a lot of sunshine in the evenings which is a bonus. Double bed was very comfy, bath was a bit small..but then I'm 6ft tall, shower was great. The cottage is situated in a quiet village. The local pub dishes up huge tasty meals and is recommended. Overall this was a perfect no frills lovely cosy cottage in a perfect location to explore North Wales. For the price you can't go wrong and in my opinion PERFECT for us. We will probably come back to this cottage in the near future as we enjoyed are stay in the cottage & Wales so much. just one thing to mention is it might be a good idea to have an outdoor light on the footbridge to the garden because it's pitch black when you first go out and you have to negotiate a step...I did trip the first time, but you only do it once! Just an idea. Overall I recommend this cottage and location.

We have just returned from this lovely cottage, the area is great for walking with many fab walks from the doorstep! Very quiet village and the cottage has everything you need simply furnished but cosy, would go back again rightly priced for what you get.

Great location, very close to the train station we had a couple of nice days out on the train and were lucky we had great weather!

nice setting, shame about the guests

This is is a lovely little cottage in a small village just outside Betws-y-coed. A river runs below the back and it looks out on the hills around snowdononia. About 50 mins from caernarfon it is perfectly situated for a holiday North Wales. Administration was poor sadly as we arrived at the local Spa to pick up the keys to initially a blank look, then the keys but general directions, without the explanation of which of the cottages in the row it actually was. A subsequent call to the contact sorted this out but a small map or details woukd have been nice. This is a proper cottage with low roofs and beams and one room downstairs and small kitchen but cosy feel. The arrival was spoilt by the awful state the previous guests had left it, with rubbish on kitchen surfaces, congealed cutlery in the sink, empty bottles stacked in the small kitchen and full bins, empty toilet rolls in bathroom and unmade beds with towels strewn around. Getting hot water proved impossible and a half empty dogfood can left with the heaters on full left an unpleasant smell on arrival. An hour later cleaning hard with hot water from the the kettle and open windows and we coukd settle in. The bedroom was small and comfortable with a beautiful morning view of misty hills. Sheep graze on the village green and we felt the stresses fade away over the days. The sound of the stream behind the house is a wonderful effect.

Perfectly situated for touring and a quaint and cosy getaway but not for those demanding the most modern of creature comforts. The shower is a separate water heater and was wonderful in the morning and after having roamed local scenery. Sadly the administration on arrival and the awful state left by previous occupants, plus quirky hot water access, really took the initial and overall shine off this cottage. We loved our romantic getaway week, but a less optimistic /positive couple would have struggled against the impediments, that are thankfully easily remedied. When sorted this will be a nice retreat from the stresses of the world.

Owner's Response: The clients failed to contact the owners on discovering problems on arrival. If they came before 3pm the cleaner would not have had a chance to prepare the property. But if they had then phoned the owners the problem could have been at once resolved. Clients are normally given clear directions to reach the cottage when they phone for arrangements to collect the key.

Great property and ideal location for exploring Snowdonia. However the property suffers from lack of maintainence. There is damp through out the property with the carpet seemingly rarely cleaned (smelly). Also had issues with the electric immersion water heater, constantly needed to use the coal burner to get hot water. Have to say that all the coal was provided. Property is not Asthma friendly. Other than that had a great time.

Activity and Interests

23 miles to Llandudno/45 minutes' drive.

The nearest airports are Manchester or Liverpool. As the cottage is in a rural setting the easiest form of approach is by car though Dolwydellan also has its own train station.

The cottage is 5 minutes walk into Dolwyddelan which has a well-stocked convenience store, a pub and a restaurant. Betws-y-Coed is 5 miles and has an excellent range of visitor facilities. Blaenau Ffestiniog (4 miles) has a wide range of shops and amenities as well as a slate mine which is open to visitors.

Conwy and Caernavon Castles are each 45-minute drive away, and Conwy also has a charming beach front.

Pen-y-Pass, a popular starting off point for Mount Snowdon, is a 40 minutes drive.
