Great town house for relaxing holiday
About the Owner
Linda (Dutch) and Peter (British) first came to Gaucin on holiday in 2000, and like many others before us, fell head over heels in love with this beautiful village and its stunning views down the Genal valley, across the Mediterranean, all the way to the Riff mountains in Morocco. We were working in the Middle East at the time, and looking for somewhere to retire. More or less on impulse, we bought two properties; Casa Laura and another property, a complete ruin, close by. Casa Laura, named after Peter's daughter, was completely refurbished and modernised. We lived there while the ruin was knocked down and rebuilt as our main house. In February 2013 we retired and moved to Gaucin permanently, which means that we now look after Casa Laura ourselves. (It was previously managed by a friend.)

Great town house for relaxing holiday
We were delighted with Casa Laura when we spent two weeks there in September. The details provided on the site provided an accurate picture of what was available. The house was comfortable and had all the equipment we needed. It was great to watch the Santo Nino procession from our windows. The descriptions in the house book for a series of local walks were particularly valuable as it meant we could really get to know the environments - viewing the buzzards close up on the slopes of El Hacho and walking the old mule paths down to the Hermitage and beyond. We hardly needed to get the car out and visit farther afield. There are excellent restaurants in the town as well as friendly bars and shops. We'll hope to visit again ourselves in the future and would recommend this house highly to couples wanting a home from home.
Excellent ,Gaucin a must place to visit
Gaucin was a beautiful place to visit. The Town House was lovely, it was clean and well maintained and the roof terrace was a joy to sit and relax and enjoy the stunning views . We had a fabulous seven days . The Bars and Resturants locally were great and the Spanish were very friendly and understanding of our lack of the language. A relaxing holiday and would recommend this A star location. Thanks to Linda and Peter for their great hospitality .
A great find...
Wow- we were really impressed with Casa Laura. It is a lovely townhouse apartment with great views. There is 3 floors (including the balcony) and the views are absolutely delightful- even in October!
The lounge is lovely and cosy. We made use of the woodburner and lit a fire every night to keep us warm (we felt we did need either the fire or the radiator).
Gaucin itself is lovely- very small and quaint- a white washed village in the mountains- very beautiful. We went for a nice walk (but wished we'd had more time to go for more to be honest!) and there are nice local restaurants/pubs nearby. Do make sure you plan/time it well if you want to eat out- as Sundays and Mondays are quiet and there isn't anywhere open really (same goes for the shops- we used the petrol station on the one day we needed emergency supplies.)
All in all, a very lovely stay. I would definitely go back to Casa Laura and to Gaucin itself.
A lovely place to stay!
Spent just over two weeks in the clean and homely Casa Laura in the quiet town of Gaucin and had a great time. There are bars and restaurants just a couple of minutes walk away which are friendly and reasonably priced.
The house itself has good facilities including comfortable bed and lovely roof terrace where we spent most of our time in the hottest part of the day.
Linda and Peter are welcoming and I would definitely recommend this property!
Peaceful and Relaxing!
We had 6 fabulous nights here. The house is light and airy and the roof terrace has great views. We also really enjoyed the wood burning stove. There are lots of great walks in the area around Gaucin and they are definitely worth exploring. Stunning scenery - views of Africa on most days! We had some good Tapas in Gaucin and enjoyed shopping at the local food shops too. Gaucin has a lovely feel about it - and fabulous if you just want to slow down a bit and catch your breath!
I would highly recommend Casa Laura and Gaucin.
This was my third visit to Gaucin in twelve months, so to say I like the place goes without saying. Whilst trying to avoid making this cliche ridden? It is the real rural Spain. I shared Casa Laura with my son. We both have stressful jobs in education and in running a Homeless charity project, so with half term looming and a few days leave to use up before Christmas, we decided to meet up at Malaga and head for the mountains.
We initially hesitated when it dawned on us we would need to share a bed! something we had not done since infant illness thirty years ago!
The bed at Casa Laura however proved to be so wide and so comfortable it was fine. The house is a delight of tasteful thoughtfulness. Thorough and detailed information on every detail of Casa Laura, the Ronda Sierras in general and Gaucin in particular.
A good choice of Tappas bars and restaurants within delightful walking distance of the solid front door coupled with well stocked village shops and the warmth of an autumn sun, it does not get better!
From the roof terrace the views over the rooftops of mountains, the Costa and North Africa in the far distance are breath taking.
In one direction the easy drive to Ronda is spell binding at every turn, Ronda itself a gem!
With such tasteful style, warm and thoughtful help and support from Linda, coupled with such incredible Value?? I feel reluctant to post this review incase this undiscovered gem becomes so popular. I won't be able to return next year!
From the Owner
“Casa Laura has extraordinary views! From the roof terrace, facing north, you can see the dramatic ruins of the Castillo Del Aquila, a 10th century Moorish castle, which is floodlit at the weekends. To the south, you look down the valley towards the shark's fin rock of Gibraltar, the Mediterranean and Morocco. It is a paradise for bird watchers, hikers and hill walkers, who are among our main clients. The surrounding area of the Pueblos Blancos (white villages) is of outstanding natural beauty, and the historic town of Ronda is just half an hour's drive north of Gaucin. If you love golf, then The Costa del Sol - 'Costa del Golf' - is just half an hour down the road. The nearest airports are Gibraltar (1 hour's drive) and Malaga (1.5 hour's drive).”

It takes about 30 minutes by car to reach the Costa del Sol. If you are into wind- or kite-surfing, or simply long walks, the quieter, less commercial Atlantic beaches of the Costa de la Luz, west of Gibraltar, are about 1.5 hours' drive from Gaucin.
Many locals and visitors to Gaucin like to bathe in the crystal clean waters of the local river Genal, 15 minutes' drive from the village.
Nearest airports: Gibraltar (70 km) and Malaga (110 km). The use of a hire car is strongly recommended as public transport in the area is very limited.

“Casa Laura is located near the centre of the village, just five minutes' walk from the shops, restaurants and tapas bars, but away from the noise associated with those places. It is a quiet, cosy, intimate house. It is great in the cooler months to curl up with a book by the wood-burning stove, and on the many clear sunny days, nothing beats getting out your binoculars and going up to the roof terrace to watch the eagles soar around the castle! This is the perfect place to unwind from the stress of city life.”
