Overview

About the property

A modern well equipped and located villa for a couple to enjoy their holiday.

Milatos Heights is a modern, detached villa standing in its own grounds on the hillside above Milatos Beach. From the large glass doors on the front elevation of both the bedroom and lounge, whether you are enjoying a coffee in bed or a cold beer by the pool, you will have beautiful, ever changing, sea and mountain views.

The unique design of the villa, which is open plan, means that the light airy rooms invite the outside in and they combine to create an overall feeling of space, more than enough for two people to enjoy the facilities of the villa and to relax in comfort.

The accommodation consists of a two storey detached villa, the ground floor has a lounge, dining area and galley style fully fitted kitchen. Comfortable seating on electric reclining leather settees

and a full size dining table means that the villa will seem like home from home. There is also a guest cloakroom for your convenience. The full size oven, four ring hob, microwave and fridge-freezer means that catering at home is a simple task and you don't even have to wash up afterwards, the integrated dishwasher will do that for you. Unlike most Greek houses the washing machine is also integrated within the kitchen.

For your entertainment there is a flat screen TV. DVD player and radio player which is also a docking station for an i-phone/pad. There are dvd's, books and games and for those who can't exist without technology there is free WFI !

Upstairs there is a large bedroom complete with a comfortable double bed, a walk in wardrobe with additional drawers and an en-suite wet-room which has a toilet, wash basin and multi jet shower. Although the villa has only one bedroom a young child can be accommodated, please contact us. A high chair and travel cot available on request

There is an air conditioning unit in the bedroom to ensure a good nights sleep and one at the rear of the living area downstairs, both controlled by timers from 9pm to 9am.

There are two terraces, one outside the lounge which gives access to the private pool and one outside the bedroom which is not overlooked and is a nice place to sit and watch the world go by. An electric sunblind gives shade to the ground floor terrace.

For al fresco dining there is a glass topped dining table and chairs, and for the sun lovers there are loungers and a comfortable settee to complete the outdoor furniture.

A portable barbeque and cooking utensils are provided, this is replaced for a new one every year.

The pool is private for your use only, it is accessed via steps from the terrace and is an all round 1.4 metre deep.

About Steve Martin

We are Steve and Barbara Martin here, the owners of the available property. We have been happily married for 34 years and have two grown-up daughters.

After falling in love with Crete we decided to have a holiday home here. We are both now retired so we can spend some of our time, usually early and late season, relaxing in the sun enjoying the peace and quiet and escaping the worse of the UK weather !

Steve Martin purchased this villa in 2013

Why Steve Martin chose Lassithi

The Villa is located on an elevated hillside plot with the incredible sea and countryside views you can see in the pictures above.

The location was chosen for the close proximity of two Greek villages, both a 5 minute drive away but very different, and the fact that the transfer time to the airport at Heraklion is only about 45 minutes. The national road offer easy access to the villa by car day or night without navigating any towns or villages en route.

We class our home village as Milatos, visible in the pictures which offers a lovely quiet and relaxed sea front location for enjoying traditional Greek meals cooked and served by the friendly owners of the tavernas.

In the other direction is the busier village of Sissi, a popular tourist resort with its hotels, car and bike hire, supermarket and all the facilities we need. There is a wider range of waterside bars and restaurants.

What makes this villa unique

The modern contemporary design of the villa makes the most of the incredible view, the rooms are awash with light from the walls of glass that separate the inside and outside living areas, Easily move between the two and enjoy the lifestyle offered by the dry climate and temperatures that Crete enjoys on its, widely reported, 300+ days of sunshine a year.

Peaceful and picturesque

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here in September 2017. The villa was spectacular and very clean. The owners met us on arrival (English) and showed us around and told us everything we needed to know. Maps of the local area were provided and the villa was situated next door to their own villa if we had any problems. Very friendly welcome.

The villa itself is well designed, the views of the sea were spectacular and to be able to open your curtains in a morning and see that view from bed was amazing. There are fly screens for all the windows which at night were needed to keep the moths out but they worked very well indeed.

The villa and pool are situated next to the road down into Milatos but you soon get used to the quad bikes and coaches going past.

The villa is a perfect size and located for a week away from it all. There are enough restaurants by the sea front in Milatos for a different one each night, we didn't venture into Sissi except for to get groceries.

A lovely villa and we had a perfect week away.

Owner's Response: We are so glad you enjoyed your holiday and had a relaxing time. We never feel anything but amazement at the ever changing scene through the bedroom window, even in winter the view is spectacular. It was nice that you spent time in the village, our neighbours and taverna owners are a freindly bunch.:-)

Lovely break for 2

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely fortnight. The villa was well equipped and Steve and Barb were really helpful, had thought of everything, they were on hand although were keen to avoid being intrusive. Lots of space for two of us. Fantastic sea view from the villa and a great place to relax or to go out sight seeing-lots of places to go all about an hour away. Milatos beach is rocky but there are some lovely sandy beaches slightly further afield. Boat trip to Spinalonga is a must.

Thanks for a lovely holiday.

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed your holiday. Crete is a beautiful island and of course the villa is well situated to explore the east side of the island. As you said it is also perfectly suited for a relaxing holiday, lying in the sun and completely chilling. Keep the memories in mind when the winter winds blow, we would love to have you visit again.

Great location away from the Crowds

  • 5 of 5

Probably the best location and villa we have had in twenty years. Steve and Barbara were fantastic hosts, extremely helpful during booking, arrival details, and during our stay. The villa is superbly finished and equipped. the location is amazing, views down to the sea. There are loads of great restaurants a very short drive from the villa, we ate at a different place each time we went out, and didn't have a bad meal. Not far to bigger places if you want a bit more! I couldn't recommend this villa more.

Great house on a wonderful island

  • 5 of 5

This house w/ private pool was very nice. We were met by the owners when we arrived around 9pm on a Fri night as they live next door. Everything was as promised, and very clean and tidy when we arrived. They came over in a timely fashion for any problems, the water system gave us some very mild grief (fixed now, I imagine) and Steve, one of the owners, was here quickly when we contacted him. The house is a bit small, but has two bathrooms and two decks (the one upstairs very private), along with the pool. The wireless worked faultlessly, which I was surprised about since we were not in the main drag, though there are many retirees in the area. Crete is a wonderful island--the people we met were friendly and honest. I have rented through VRBO all over the world for many years and would say the experience in Crete was one of the best of many good experiences.

Owner's Response: It was great meeting you and we are so pleased to hear that you enjoyed your month in our villa, especially after having travelled all the way from the USA. We love being here on Crete and it makes us happy that our guests have an enjoyable time and come to love the island as much as we do. With our very best wishes Steve and Barb

Just Beautiful

  • 5 of 5

A modern villa overlooking the bay. It was eqipped with everything you could possibly need, the welcome package was spot on and the villa was spotlessly clean.

The owners were there to greet us and are so friendly and nice. Very peaceful with beautiful views. It was perfect for us, we'd go back tomorrow if it was possible, the best holiday ever Thanks Steve & Barbs

Peace & Quiet

  • 4 of 5

We wanted a comfortable, quiet week away from it all. How fortunate then that we chose this lovely modern house up in the hills above Milatos. It's very comfortable and well equipped, but to be honest we never used the flat-screen TV, nor the DVD player; never used the dishwasher, nor the washing machine. We did make good use of the huge patio area however and as a keen birdwatcher I was delighted by Sardinian Warblers, Bee-Eaters and vultures by day and the wierd sound of Nightjars just after dusk.

The owners greeted us on arrival and were enthusiastic, practical people who were only too pleased to help when necessary (the instructions for getting there from the airport were excellent!). The only downside is that due to the design, the upstairs toilet isn't very private, but otherwise the house is clean, bright, airy and practical.

Children and elderly people will need to be careful on the narrow spiral staircase; and you need to be cautious when driving out of the property as it is on a blind bend and bikes especially tend to zoom down the hill towards the coast: a mirror opposite the entrance would alleviate this risk.

This isn't a place with a ton of stuff to do just on the doorstep, so it's worth bearing in mind that kids/teens and people wanting a Malia-type experience could easily get bored (though it does have wi-fi). It is ideal as a base for exploring, however, with Agios Nikolaos, the Lassithi plateau and countless Cretian villages all within easy reach, and I'd recommend visiting Sisi for restaurants, supermarkets, gift shops and seaside stuff. Would I book this accomodation again? Absolutely.

:The villa is located between Milatos and Sisi . Out of the two Milatos is the more traditional one with and bougainvillea covered houses lining cobbled streets. The beach is shingle, approx. 2km,/ 3 minute drive away but its here on the seafront you will find welcoming tavernas and a small working harbour. The village is known for it's cave in which there is a small chapel dedicated to the men and women who took refuge in there and were subsequently killed by the Turks in 1823. Take a torch if you plan to visit, its a 10 minute walk from the main road. In the opposite direction is Sisi, approx. 4km., which is a bigger and more commercialised. There are several sandy beaches in the area, a number of tavernas on the seafront and even a small night club. If you wish to shop for provisions you will find a couple of supermarkets, butchers, bakeries, a pharmacy and the all important ATM

There is a large public beach near the archaeological site of Malia Palace about 8 minutes drive from the villa.

Further Details:

The famous Leper Colony Island of Spinalonga, the subject of a famous book ' The Island ' is well worth a visit. You can catch a boat in Agios Nikolaos, Elounda or Plaka. Each journey varies in time and cost with Agios Nikolaos being the furthest and Plaka just 2 minutes away.

The regions capital is Agios Nikolaos, the St Tropez of Crete, A bustling town where you can shop till you drop and discover the famous inner lake, around which you can sit at one of the many tavernas eating drinking and watching the world go by.

Further to the east there are good un-crowded coastal areas. Follow the coast road which climbs a little and offers incredible sea views whilst passing through picturesque unspoilt villages that are beyond the normal tourist areas of the island.

Alternatively go West back towards the airport and the capital of Crete Heraklion to experience the more densely populated and developed tourist areas with the popular resorts of Malia and Hersonissos and for a cultural experience visit the ruins of the Minoan Palace at Knossos.

The final option is to go inland and climb up into mountain villages that are the ' real ' Crete. T he region takes its name from the Lasithi Plateau, which is, as the name suggests, a very fertile flat area high up in the mountains. Although there are not many windmills in operation these days there are still a few to be seen dotted over the almost perfect patchwork of the plateau. It is a good example of rural Crete and every inch of the tiny fields is given over to the cultivation of some sort of crop. Just above the village of Psihro is the Dhiktean Cave rumoured to be the birth place of Zeus, king of the Gods of Mount Olympus
