Apartment in Porthmadog, Wales - Peaceful Location, Short Walk To Beaches, Shops And Restaurants

Lovely ground floor apartment with beautiful views of Snowdonia and the Glaslyn estuary with garden adjacent to harbour. Recently refurbished. The sitting room looks out directly onto Porthmadog Harbour where you can watch the boats and see wonderful views in all directions. The property is on the Welsh Coastal Path. There is a numbered parking space outside the apartment. It is in a very quiet spot, but at the same time close to everything you might need! It is within easy walking distance of the Ffestiniog steam railway station and also of many shops, cafes, restaurants in Porthmadog town. Also nearby is the pretty village of Borth-y-Gest and the beaches beyond including Black Rock sands, all of which are lovely for families. There are 2 pubs within a couple of minutes walk, both serving food, and there are nearby Indian, Thai and many other restaurants also within easy walking distance in Porthmadog itself. About the Owner

My name is Emma Patchett and I live in Warwickshire with my husband and two children. Before having my children I had a career as a solicitor, although I decided to give up my legal position whilst the children are young. I now work part-time. The apartment in Porthmadog belongs to my mother.

It is in such a beautiful and peaceful spot, with every type of amenity close by. We hope it appeals to many types of holiday maker - walkers, beach lovers, climbers, wildlife enthusiasts, fans of steam railway or those who simply want a restful holiday watching the yachts in the harbour. Our children have loved trips to the beaches and amazing coastal castles nearby. All of our family have had wonderful holidays in the apartment and we would like others to be able to enjoy the delights of Snowdonia too!

A great place to stay for touring North Wales

  • 4 of 5

The property was clean and well-equipped. We particularly enjoyed the views from the lounge window over Porthmadog harbour and the Moelwyns beyond. Being keen walkers we found plenty of footpaths which were clearly marked. A bath or shower was always a great welcome on our return.

Wales will always be our favourite country for spending our holiday time.......thank you.

Lovely waterside apartment

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely week in this very comfortable, well equipped apartment. The view is wonderful, overlooking the harbour with the mountains in the distance. Easy access to the coastal path and well placed for our visits to Anglesey, Bodnant Garden in Conwy and a moderate climb at Craflwyn. Enjoyed meals in the Thai restaurant in Porthmadog and The Moorings in Both y Gest. Would definitely use this apartment again.

Third time lucky!

  • 5 of 5

We were a little apprehensive about going back to the same place three years in a row - it`s great, but too much of a good thing.....? Absolutely NOT! It`s still lovely and clean, well equipped and a brilliant position - going back feels like coming home - so much so that we`re going to have to do it again next year! Still haven`t done everything we want to do, and we must go back to the Thai restaurant again......

Couldn't have been better

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I have just returned from a most enjoyable four day break in the apartment which is extremely comfortable, clean, tidy and very well equipped and maintained. It has a stunning location on the harbour front with clear views across to the Snowdonia mountains and the Ffestiniog railway and is in a great position for exploring the coast path walks to Borth-y-Gest and beyond. Emma, the owner, is very helpful and friendly and easily contacted via email.. We would highly recommend staying here but are wary of praising it too much in case it becomes fully booked when we want to go again (which we will)!!!

Just prefect!

  • 5 of 5

Stunning location on the harbour front with clear views across to the Snowdonia mountains (wonderful sunrises!) and the Ffestiniog railway. The apartment is small but comfortable, clean, tidy and very well equipped - perfect for couples. The best thing about our stay was sitting on the lawn in the morning enjoying our coffee and breakfast in the sunshine.

Porthmadog is an ideal base for accessing the best attractions in Snowdonia with all amenities within a short walking distance and sandy beaches within 20 minutes walk or 5 minute drive. We ran out of time to see everything and were so happy with the apartment we are booking again for next year.

Emma, the owner, is very helpful and friendly and easily contacted via email. I would highly recommend staying here.

Location

From the Owner

Snowdonia is a wonderful destination for a holiday. We love the area because there are so many different things to do and it also has both spectacular coastal and mountain scenery. The apartment is ideally positioned to take advantage of both. The apartment is very quiet and peaceful and is at the edge of the small town of Porthmadog. It is situated on the Harbour, the access road is actually part of the Welsh Coastal Path. In the 19th century Oakley Wharf was a busy quayside loading Welsh slate for export around the world, and the area retains many historic features. It's only a few minutes walk to restaurants, pubs, shops, beaches and Ffestiniog railway station where you can travel by steam train into the surrounding countryside. The apartment can cater for everyone's holiday needs!

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

The beginning of the coves beyond Borth-y-Gest are approx 10 - 15 minutes walk away along the Welsh Coastal Path which runs past the apartment. Borth-y-Gest village with its 2 cafes on the front is approx. 5 - 10 minutes walk away. Black Rock Sands is a long sandy beach approx 2 miles drive away, you can drive your car onto the beach. Harlech Beach and Shell Island, a great family beach with cafe and toilets is approx 20 mins drive away. A further drive away is Abersoch beach.

Travel:

Nearest airports are Liverpool or Manchester.

Distances:

5 - 10 mins walk to Porthmadog High Street with shops, cafes, restaurants, bank. Approx 2 miles drive to Portmerion village. 5 - 10 mins walk to the Ffestiniog steam railway station with its great freehouse pub. Criccieth and Harlech castles approx 15 - 20 mins drive away. Betws-y-Coed and Beddgelert villages also a short drive away. Caenarvon with its spectacular castle is approx. 30 mins drive away. There is also a children's playpark and a small crazy golf course approx 5 mins walk away.

Further Details:

The well-known Ffestiniog train station is a short walk away on the other side of the harbour. Steam trains can be seen (and distantly heard) from the sitting room of the apartment. The WHR track now extends towards Caenarvon.

Castles - Harlech, Criccieth and Caenarvon are all fantastic and interesting to visit -stunning in their own ways.

Walking - the towns of Beddgelert and Betws-y-coed are both a short drive away from Porthmadog where there are wonderful walks in the countryside.

Climbing - if you are feeling adventurous you can climb one of the routes to the top of Mount Snowdon.

Wildlife - there are Ospreys nesting nearby with a nest cam for nature lovers to watch at the Project Site. There is also plenty of seabird life in the harbour itself.

Shops - there is a Tesco, Lidl, Wilkinsons, HSBC, Post Office chemist, delicatessens and various independent shops and cafes in Porthmadog High Street.

Cafes / Restaurants - Yr Hen Fecws is very nearby, opposite the play park serving delicious fresh food including breakfast. Kerfoots cafe is at the end of the High Street, above a lovely kitchenware shop, and is reached by ascending an enormous wooden spiral staircase. Also Moorings, the Big Rock cafe, Jennys, Jessies, Cadwaladers. The Royal Sportsman is also recommended.

Restaurants - There is a Thai restaurant at the Yacht club, an Indian restaurant along the road near the Ship Inn, and Allports fish and chip shop on Snowdon Street!

Borth-y-Gest - Moorings is lovely, as is the Sea View cafe on the front.

Pubs - the Ship Inn and Pen Cei are both within 5 mins walk, both serving food. The Ffestiniog railway station - Spooners, serves food and houses a great freehouse pub with an ever-changing range of guest ales!

Facilities

From the Owner

One of the best things about Oakley Wharf is its waterside location and the fabulous harbour views from the garden. This makes it a wonderful spot for sitting in the garden, having a cup of tea/glass of wine, or eating, and watching the boats go by. To the left you can see the ever changing colours of the mountains of Snowdonia and to the right is the Glaslyn estuary with its varied bird life and the beautiful sea views. From the front door it is a pleasant walk to the beaches beyond Borth-y-Gest or the shops & cafes of Porthmadog High Street. You can choose a short stroll or a longer hike along the coastal paths, past beaches and coves with spectacular views. The Ffestiniog railway is also very nearby for memorable steam-powered trips into Snowdonia.
