About the property

Comfortable 2 bedroom holiday bungalow, behind a thatched pub and 20 minutes walk to a beautiful beach.

Little Nod is a well equipped holiday bungalow with a shared garden for residents only and a patio with garden furniture. It is situated on a small, secluded site of 12 bungalows behind a thatched pub in the coastal village of Welcombe. There are 2 bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with bunk beds. There is a Graco travel cot and a booster seat high chair if needed. The booster seat can be used with, or without the tray.. The bathroom has a shower over the bath. There is a well equipped kitchen with hob, oven, microwave, toaster, electric kettle, fridge/freezer and washing machine. There is a comfortable lounge area with a 3 seater settee, easy chair and a flat screened 40" Smart TV with Freeview and you are welcome to bring your own Fire stick, if you have one. There is DVD player with a USB port for memory sticks and a small DVD library, including some for children. Little Nod is ideal for families or couples.

One well behaved dog only is welcome at no extra charge. Please ensure you fill in the relevant section when booking.

There is a telephone for you to make national calls and short calls to mobiles and wifi included in the rental price. There is a wall mounted modern radiator in the living room which is very efficient and there are wall mounted oil filled radiators in the bedrooms. There is a heated towel rail and a fan heater in the bathroom. There is also a moveable oil filled radiator and a small convector heater should you need them. The electricity is supplied by a £1 coin meter. We leave £5 credit in here for a week during the summer and £10 credit during the winter.

There is a porch with a tumble drier and a patio and garden furniture for your use.

The beach is 1½ miles away down a wooded valley and has a small free car park. There is a stretch of sand at low tide with pebbles, rock pools and a small waterfall. Welcombe is a village on the North Devon/Cornwall border, popular with walkers, surfers and families. Visitors return year after year to enjoy the peace, quiet and natural beauty of the area. There is a large nature reserve nearby, as well as the coast path. The sunken leafy lanes are crowded with primroses in Spring.

The Old Smithy Inn has a lovely beer garden to enjoy on a sunny summer's day and an open log fire for winter evenings. It serves excellent food, real ales and good wines. They have weekly events, including Jam night on Tuesday, Cheap Food night on Wednesday, Pizza night on Thursday, a Pie and a Pint offer on Friday and Sunday roasts. There are also monthly events, including a Folk night and a quiz.

Local attractions include Marsland Nature Reserve, SW Coast Path, Tintagel, Boscastle, The Milky Way, The Big Sheep, The Gnome Reserve, picturesque Clovelly, Docton Mill Gardens, Hartland Abbey, Hartland Quay, Dartington Crystal and Rosemoor RHS Gardens. About Sue Dollimore

We have owned Little Nod since December 1999. We live in Welcombe, just across the valley and usually do all the cleaning and maintenance of Little Nod ourselves. Sue is a retired nurse/therapist and Mick is a semi retired, part time builder. We love this area and look forward to sharing it with you.

Sue Dollimore purchased this bungalow in 1999

Why Sue Dollimore chose Torridge

We love this unspoilt area of Devon and moved here ourselves almost 30 years ago. We have lived in Welcombe since 1994.

What makes this bungalow unique

Welcombe is one of North Devon's best kept secrets. A remote but welcoming area, as the name suggests. The beach is beautiful with a small waterfall, rock pools and a stretch of sand at low tide. There is a small car park, or you can walk down the wooded valley which is crowded with wild flowers, especially in Springtime. The Old Smithy Inn is a 2 minute walk away from Little Nod and is the very best pub we know. There is a village shop which offers an ordering service and a lovely working pottery. There are lots of other walks in the village, as well as the one to the beach and the South West Coast Path is easily accessed. We have lots of information about walks and other local attractions, as well as maps and a tide table for your use.

We live in the village and do all the cleaning and maintenance of Little Nod ourselves. We keep this to a high standard and love to make it welcoming and comfortable for all our guests. Our regulars often describe it as their "home from home".

Guestbook comments from the owner

February 2015 "Wonderful welcome with biscuits, milk and everything you could ask for. Beautiful snowdrops (one of my favourites). The bungalow was spotless & welcoming. Everything perfect. Thank you so much." Sue & Ray (Gloucestershire)

November 2014 " This is our fourth visit to Little Nod! This time just a long weekend, I wish it could have been longer! The three of us walked every day as always and avoided the rain somehow. Thank you Sue and Mick for everything (Perfect as always) and can't think of staying anywhere else now. Welcombe and Marsland valleys are so beautiful. Have a wonderful Christmas both of you and we will see you in April 2015 if not before for a long weekend. Thank you." Helen, Molly & Kitty

January 2015 "There's no place like home - except Little Nod! Thank you, Sue & Mick and see you soon. The broadband/phone are great." Martin (Portsmouth/London)

August 2014 " After missing last year, glad to make it this year. The holiday was well worth the wait. Excellent accommodation, the warmest of welcomes, beautiful beaches & scenery. So much to do & see. We'll be taking home some more special memories, thank you." Norman, Kirsty, Jake, Matthew & Thistle (Shropshire)

Our home away from home

  • 5 of 5

This was our 5th stay at Little Nod. It's becoming our regular home away from home, we have already booked our next stay. The owners as ever were very helpful. The bungalow is very homely, located in private grounds behind a lovely pub which does great food and a good selection of ales. There are a number of secluded beaches nearby also Bude and Bideford are a short drive away.

The bungalow itself has a good selection of books, dvd's and games, also extra bedding in case it's needed. The kitchen is well equipped with a cooker and hob, toaster and microwave, also a large fridge freezer. On arrival we found as usual everything we needed for a cup of tea after our drive down and dog biscuits for our little dog. Our stay was as ever quiet and peaceful and we are looking forward to our next visit.

An Abiding Delight

  • 5 of 5

I have had the good fortune to be able to come to Little Nod regularly for 17 years, sometimes more than once a year, and it would always be my absolute first choice for a stay in this area, a place I have known and cherished since childhood.

Lovingly looked after and presented by Sue and Mick Dollimore, and crammed full of wonderful little touches, it really does feel like nothing so much as a delightful home from a home with everything you could possibly want and more besides, as several other reviewers have said. Sue and Mick take care to keep improving and upgrading without changing the feel too much. There is even wi-fi should you need it. It exerts its appeal at any time of the year and, on this occasion, it was a particular joy arriving at dusk on New Year's Eve to the glow from the lights of a seasonal little Christmas tree.

The situation is perfect, with a view out over the valley towards the sea on the one hand, and a walk of less than a minute to the glorious Old Smithy Inn on the other, with its warm and friendly welcome. I know of nowhere else that gives rise to such a feeling of peace and wellbeing from the moment you arrive.

I hope to enjoy many more stays here and have always taken pleasure in handing it back to Sue and Mick in the same state as I find it on arrival. They do not ask for any more, so there is no need for "buyer beware" on that score and I must admit that I therefore struggle to understand the review submitted on 28 December 2016 immediately before we arrived.

Unreservedly recommended.

Owner's Response: Thank you Martin and it has been a pleasure to welcome you to Little Nod for all those years. Yes, we aim to make Little Nod a home from home for our many regulars and try to keep all the equipment well maintained and updated as necessary. Last year we replaced the toaster, the kettle, the living room heater, some of the bedding, some pillows, the microwave and the oven (which you christened). It is always a pleasure to do the clean after you as you leave it so clean and tidy. You obviously love Little Nod as much as we do :-)

Second home!

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at little nod many times and it's our home away from home. We are a family of 4 with a lively dog, the minute we entered the cottage we felt at home. The location is second to none, great walking from the door and next to the best free house I have ever been in. The bungalow is well maintained, clean and well equipped, it is not an "interior designers" project but does not profess to be. It is designed for people to be comfortable, cosy and to provide all the amenities they need to explore the area, enjoy the outdoors and come back to at the end of a productive day. Our children are now teenagers (17 & 13) and we thought this trip would be our last to Little Nod for a while, but the children soon put us straight and we are coming again in April - we can't wait. The owners ask that you leave the property tidy and put the bins out but certainly not like other places where we have stayed where you are required to deep clean.

Owner's Response: Thank you Lynne, you're absolutely right, we ask that people leave Little Nod tidy and sort out the rubbish and any obvious mess. However, we don't require them to do a clean as we both usually spend at least 3 hours there doing that. I'm glad you appreciate the comfort and cosyness, as that is what we aim for. We like to replace equipment as necessary and keep up with the maintenance. In the past year we have replaced the toaster, the kettle, the oven, the main heater, the microwave and some of the bedding and pillows. In the past 2 - 3 years we have installed a phone/wifi and replaced the bed, the washing machine and curtains. I'm so glad your children want to come back, we do find that with families, we have one family whose children are now 18 and 21 and they still return every year :-)

Wonderful little retreat

  • 5 of 5

Set in a quiet field behind the village pub Little Nod was the perfect winter retreat. Located close to the coast and within easy reach of many walking opportunities its setting was ideal but what I was particularly taken by was how well appointed it was considering the price. I have stayed in places far more expensive which did not have the amount of amenities Sue has provided to make your stay all the more enjoyable. Especially liked the little touches like hand made soap and a bonio for the dog. We had a wonderful short break and have booked again for this february

Owner's Response: We are so glad you enjoyed your winter break David and are coming back again in February. This area is a good one for walking and enjoying all year round and there is something special about the winter here. Especially taking a long walk and then popping into the Old Smithy with it's roaring log fire, good food and local ales.
