Le Chaudron Is A Country Cottage in a peaceful hamlet

Updated: 28-Jul-2016
Cottage in Le Grand Mont Alix, Nr. Rouen, Seine Maritime, Normandy, France - Peaceful, Rural Setting

Le Chaudron is a fully renovated 19th century cottage with terrace and gardens to front and rear. It is ideal for couples and families seeking a peaceful rural setting. It is a two-bedroom house with dining kitchen and sitting room with everything conveniently situated on the ground floor. The tourist villages of Lyons-La-Forêt and Forges-Les-Eaux are 15 to 20 minutes away and the beautiful city of Rouen is just 35 kilometres. We are in the Pays de Bray in the heart of beautiful walking territory and on the edge of the Forest of Lyons. Visits to Paris and the coast make good days out and there are many local châteaux and gardens.

About the Owner

Jeanette & Keith (both retired teachers) have lived in St Lucien since 1995 which is when we opened our B&B + evening meal business, Les Quatre Oiseaux. This is the option if you want to be fully looked after. However, some 10 years ago, we decided to cut down this work to two rooms, and to renovate and then open Le Chaudron, our self-catering property in the same village. Our main work, outside our interest in tourism, is in running a charity called Les Amis d'Ouganda (Friends of Uganda) whose work is to support children with nothing. We have recruited our French friends and neighbours to help us and we visit regularly both for the pleasure it gives us and to ensure that the money we send is properly used.

A relaxing holday 1-11 June 2015

  • 4 of 5

The property was quite remote, 15 minutes to nearest shop but we had been made aware of this by Keith before hand. The accommodation was a little dated but fulfilled our needs. There was plenty of hot water and a good strong shower. There was ample kitchen equipment and crockery although not a lot matched. The beds were very comfortable but bed settees in lounge used for seating were somewhat uncomfortable if sitting for any length of time. The back garden was lovely but sun loungers would have been a good addition The property was generally clean ( remains of balloon found on floor) Keith and Jeanette were good hosts and were quick to respond when we discovered CD player was not working , a new one was provided the next day. There was a supply of CD`s DVD`s and books for our use although magazines were very out of date. Diary of peoples` holidays was extremely helpful when choosing places to visit in the area. Beautiful part of France with much to see in the immediate area and well situated for trips further afield . However a car is a must and you must be organised when stocking up with provisions, supermarket 30 minutes away. In conclusion we had and enjoyable holiday, for the price we feel this was excellent value.

From the Owner

After holidaying in France for many years, we decided that we wanted a base of our own. We loved the house and area and the locals were genuinely welcoming and so, when we had the opportunity of taking early retirement, the idea of fully renovating the house and using it for chambres d'hôtes seemed an ideal solution. The purchase of our second house (Le Chaudron) followed some years later.

Activity and Interests

Approximately 70 kilometres to the coast, an hour's drive. Cycling is available along the Avenue Verte from Forges-les-Eaux towards Dieppe.

Beauvais Airport - 60 kilometres, one hour's drive.

Charles de Gaulle, Paris - 125 kilometres, one hour 45 minutes by car

St Lucien 2km., La Feuillie (local shopping) 8km., Lyons-La-Forêt 17 km., Forges-les-Eaux 17km, Rouen 35 km.

Further Details:

St Lucien is a peaceful village in the Pays de Bray which is cheese and cider country. The delicious Neufchâtel is the oldest of the Normandy cheeses. The country is rolling with picturesque villages and attractive valleys. We are on the edge of the Forest of Lyons, an ideal spot for cyclists and walkers.

There are also châteaux, museums and many gardens (including Monet's at Giverny) which are open to the public. We are 20 minutes away from the ancient spa town of Forges-Les-Eaux with its famous casino, while 15 minutes in the opposite direction will take you to Lyons-La-Forêt or Ry, famed as the home of Flaubert's "Madame Bovary."

The beautiful old city of Rouen and the attractive valley of the Seine are only about half an hour away, while Paris and the resorts of the Normandy coast make good days out.

In addition there are the usual rural leisure pursuits of walking, cycling and riding, and we shall be happy to give advice on local restaurants.
