Canalside House With verandah, walking, cycling, near w'sports&Morvan national park

Updated: 26-Oct-2016
House in La Collancelle, Nr. Corbigny, Nievres, Burgundy, France - Lively At Front (Peaceful At Rear) Location Near To Lakes With Water Sports, Market Towns & Country

The tallest house in Port Brule, Watershed offers unrivalled views over the Nivernais canal and tow path from both the ground and first floors. Life on the canal in summer with hire boats, private craft, the electric restaurant barge 'L'air du temps' which cruises the tunnels leading to the lakes at Baye, plus a constant traffic of cyclists and walkers using the renowned canal cycling route are sufficient entertainment to pass a fulfilling week without leaving the premises. Built in the 1790's at the same time as the canal, the stone walls keep the house cool in summer and there are wood burners and central heating to keep you warm in winter. Like to eat outside? There is a patio at the rear which is relatively private compared to the courtyard and conservatory at the front where it is difficult to divorce yourself from the canal side activity! The location is perfect for wine tasting tours, eating out, market towns, walking, cycling, water sports and the baker comes to your door!

About the Owner

My wife, Jenny, & I moved to France 10 years ago when our daughter was 10, hoping to enjoy a less stressful lifestyle than self employment in England and to give our daughter another language and perspective on life. Before moving to France we bought a house on The Canal du Nivernais in Burgundy as it was a beautiful location and we have an interest in boating but when we made our move it was to a watermill in the Limousin near Limoges which offered better possibilities as regards our daughters upbringing. 10 years on we have just finished renovating the house on the canal which is available to rent all year round, our daughter is studying at University in England and we vacate our watermill in Limousin for summer holiday rentals whilst we repair to more modest accommodation.

Great place to unwind and relax

  • 3 of 5

Watershed is a very characteristic french cottage on the canal. It is well equipped including bikes. It is an ideal place to stay if you just want to leave your hectic life behind as it lays on a beautiful, scenic canal away from the hassle of modern day life. Enjoy a quiet bottle of wine in the evening on the canal bank watching the canal boats moor for the night. Really felt relaxed when we left after a week.

All we were promised

The property was exactly as advertised, in a lovely position next to the canal, all very clean & well equipped, a wonderful place for a relaxing holiday. Owner was responsive to all our questions & quick to refund deposit. Our special thanks to Angelique & Thierry (caretakers) who were a great help during our stay.

We enjoyed sitting at the front of the house & watching the boats, later retiring to the slightly cooler area at the back of the property. There were plenty of books to read & information about the area plus games & table tennis for the energetic. The towpath was excellent for walking or cycling; we made it to the lakes & into Corbigny on bikes provided, stopping for a drink at the “pink lock”! A good meal was had at La Marine in Baye. Would definitely recommend this property.

The french adventure

  • 5 of 5

We chose the holiday cottage in Port Brule for several reasons, The house was near to a canal, small quaint group of houses, close enough to a town so as fresh provisions could be obtained and from home in the Uk the travel time by car was achieved in one day.

Near to a canal; The house is located near the first lock of 18 on the Canal du Nivernais this gave the opportunity of some good walks, in hindsight we should have taken our bikes.

The house was located amongst a small community of houses generally used as holiday homes which gave us the feeling of belonging although we were only there for two weeks. The lock keepers house where Angelique lived was right near by and she was a great help to us on where to go and what to see and do.

Corbigay was a 15 minute drive where there was a supermarket and several cafe's, we spent some excellent afternoons watching the world go by whilst enjoying a cappuccino or two.

The house was in a excellent position from which to explore the surrounding area, we visited two Chateaus and swam in the near-by lake at Baye.

The town of Avallon was a 40 minute drive and was well worth it.

We enjoyed our stay very much and will return.

Owner's Response: We are always delighted when guests enjoy their stay and are intrigued by the different things that people do on their holidays. This year we have had several requests for bikes as the canal towpath is ideal for cycling and the towns of Corbigny and even Clamecy to the North and Le Chatillon en Bazois to the south not to mention the lake complex at Baye( just 3Km) are easily accessible, so for 2014 we are going to make available our 3 personal bikes to visitors. Having a local baker deliver to your door is a real advantage, especially as Sunday is one of his days in Port Brule, not everyone arrives totally organised on a Saturday, and Sunday opening is not the norm in France so being able to get your fresh breakfast before 9 O'clock can be a life saver. There is also a new restaurant ' La Marine' in Baye just on the bend opposite the lock- keeprs house, Angeligue will get you a table if you need lunch as well! It is reputedly good and not expensive.

A little gem

  • 4 of 5

We spent a thoroughly enjoyable week on the Canal du Nivernais at Port Brule in this property. We have spent holidays in most parts of France over the years and have become quite fond of Burgundy. This is a special location - very little motor traffic on the restricted canalside road but plenty of interest from passing boats, walkers and cyclists. The history of the canal which was built to connect the Loire and the Seine with the original intention of floating timber from the forests in the west, to Paris, is fascinating and Port Brule is at the highest point - downstream in both directions: towards the Seine is the beautiful tree-lined 'Sardy Ladder' of 16 locks - enough for a gentle walk with plenty of interest; towards the Seine there are three tunnels and the deep manmade gorges of Les vo?tes de la Collancelle. The whole system is topped up with water brought into Port Brule along another feeder canal from the River Yonne. We hired an electric boat from Baye for an afternoon and did the round trip to Port Brule and back to experience the canal, its tunnels and the 'vo?tes' from water level.

Corbigny, about 10km away, is a pleasant small market town with a range of good local food and wine as well as a couple of supermarkets. It was extremely busy and lively when the market was operating. We were lucky to catch internationally renowned jazz musician Manu Katch? performing in the local music festival on our first weekend.

The wider area has good walking and lots of history to explore. The Romanesque churches of Burgundy would take weeks to do justice to. We took enjoyable trips to Vezelay and La Charit?-sur-Loire.

The property itself is unusual and charming. The little shady patio at first floor level at the rear gave us respite from the sun during the heat of the day and we ate all our meals outside, watching the swallows swooping in and out of the basement. The first floor living room / kitchen is spacious and attractive and gives good views out over the canal. The sleeping accommodation is comfortable and the shower room was clean and functional. We were a family party of three. The fact that the second bedroom is accessed through the first, might not suit everyone but worked well for us. We even enjoyed an evening's table tennis in the ground floor reception room.

A unique and delightful spot which I have no hesitation in recommending.

From the Owner

We bought a house on The Canal du Nivernais at Port Brûlé which we found whilst researching a possible boating holiday on the canal because in the words of the other inhabitants of the hamlet 'c'est la paradis' ( it is Paradise) with a view to possibly retiring there in the future. The area is very rural and ideal for walking & cycling which we enjoy but the canal has a life of its own and offers great interest, even in winter when it is sometimes drained for repair work. The local town of Corbigny offers all that you could want whilst on holiday and with the proximity of the Morvan National Park, the lake complex at nearby Baye and the city of Nevers the area has something to interest everyone.

From the Owner

The property offers the possibility to engage with or just observe life on the canal. You have action at the front of the house contrasting with peace & quiet at the rear and somewhere for the kids to let off steam in the games room. Cool indoors in the summer and cosy in winter. It is the perfect starting point for expeditions on foot, by bike or car to walk around the block or around the flight of 16 locks over 3Km, to cycle to the medieval town of Clamecy via the canal towpath, to tour the vineyards of Burgundy or follow the route of the 'Rigole' which brings water to the canal from Lake Panneciere 35Km away with 2 viaducts of its own.
