Wonderful Whitby

  • 5 of 5

In short, Number 5 West Terrace was and is an excellent choice for us, 2 adults, for 2 weeks in a perfect seaside location, well positioned for car, bus and train trips to loads of lovely other Yorkshire attractions, too many to list here. The town is bulging with fantastic restaurants, not all of them Fish and Chips specialist. The house is well located immediately behind the Bay Royal Hotel which is operated by Shearing's Coach Holidays so no rowdy parties there! A casual walk to the harbour takes about 10 minutes although No 5 comes with an inclusive Blue Beach Hut adjacent to the Lifeguard station beside Whitby Pavilion looking over the busy Harbour entrance and the North Sea. And there are 4 Cliff Lift passes provided that eliminate the steep steps and the Khyber Pass to the Harbour and Beach, perfect. Would we go again? Most definitely. But next time we will take our 3 generation family with us to utilise all 3 bedrooms over 3 floors, together with the massive provision of games, DVD, Video and , Audio, Kitchen, and other equipment. BUT, be careful to learn about the recently introduced parking arrangements or risk a hefty £70 parking fine. Not even the parking wardens or the Tourist Information are sure about how it works. Be warned before you go. Free parking is provided for visitors but only if you display the provided scratchcards And finally, we were warned by the owner expertsTony Watkins that despite many reassurances that the Electrical System is safe, but overly sensitive resulting in frequent fuse box tripouts , we found it very annoying to have to climb a set of ladders to reset the fuse switches. As it happens, that did not cause us a problem as we had resolved to eat out every night, so we turned the Cooker Main Switch off, and hey presto, the fuse box never tripped again during our entire 2 weeks. Except that is on one evening when we chose t heat some soup. And as soon as switched the cooker on, the fuse switch tripped. I have let Tony Watkins know about this and hopefully the problem will now be resolved. As already stated, we will return again with our 3 generation family, but only if we get a solid assurance that the electrical problem has been resolved. Otherwise, a lovely house in a great location and great value for money.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review, we are glad you enjoyed your stay in Whitby and our house. We have had problems with the electrics being very sensitive and blowing fuses for years, but, after an extensive analysis by the electrics specialists at British Gas, we have now had the complete ground floor ring main replaced and have fingers crossed that thus has cured the problems, and that the days of clambering up stepladders to reset fuses are over.
