About the property

2 bedroom house (sleeps 6) in Los Gallardos, Mojacar Near Alfaix,, Almeria Andalucia, Spain - Rural Village Location, Spectacular Walks, Panoramic Unspoilt Views, 20 Minutes Drive Mojacar Beach

Casa Jacaranda is let on a self-catering basis. This is a very private, tranquil location in a small hamlet, though not remote. This is the 'real Spain' and we are the only foreigners in La Tarea. Los Gallardos and Turre are both a ten minute drive away, and both have a weekly street market and various shops, bars, and restaurants. The Moorish village of Mojacar is about 20 minutes away. We are a half hour's drive from Almeria airport.

About chris walton

Chris has lived in Spain for 9 years and in a former life was an antique dealer for 20 years before opening a bistro in Cheshire. Before leaving England, she renovated a semi-derelict farm on the Cheshire/Derbyshire borders, and owned two gift shops, also selling flowers and plants. Gardening is a favourite leisure activity, struggling with rock-hard stony soil to grow tomatoes, courgettes, mange-tout peas, salads and herbs. Chris loves cooking for guests, often using home grown ingredients, making fresh bread daily, and the house produces an awesome Limoncello liqueur. We shall shortly be introducing chickens. Growing exotic plants is a passion, and the many terraces have examples of all manner of unusual flowers and plants.

We love meeting new people from all walks of life.

chris walton purchased this villa in 2012

Why chris walton chose Mojacar area

We have lived in this area for 9 years, but a fantastic opportunity arose to buy a neglected old cortijo and detached 2 bedroom house in an even more spectacular setting than before. Both properties had 'good bones' that were crying out for love and attention. This is also the Real Spain. Before, we were surrounded by ex-pats, and here we are the only foreigners. Although we are in a tranquil, picturesque setting, we are by no means remote, and can be in a busy supermarket in 10 minutes.

What makes this villa unique

Guests can enjoy the peace and tranquility, and read or swim in the pool, or just hop over the wall and walk for miles without seeing a soul!

Guestbook comments from the owner

John and Elizabeth Cave, Rutland. So who moved Shangri La to southern Spain? Timeless charm with attentive (but never intrusive) hosts. Excellent food and excellent company in a beautiful setting....and the weather's not bad too. Coming back?? You bet!! June 2013

Lynne and Martin Curtis, Andalusia. We had a wonderful break with Chris and Harry. The place reflects their personalities and hospitality even better than their previous property. The place is so peaceful, in a typical Spanish area, perfect to get the feel of old Spain and near enough to the town and sea to suit most people. Nights unpolluted by light are star-filled with the odd frog singing by the stream below. Ideal to sink the odd vino or three. Comfortable and spacious, you can really chill out by the beautiful pool area. Breakfast in the gazebo, fresh squeezed orange juice, home-made bread and jams, and for the die-hards, eggs and bacon.. Oh- and remember to say hello to Suki, the real boss there!!

A wonderful Spanish holiday

  • 4 of 5

La Jacaranda is a spacious and comfortable villa found at the end of a track which winds down from the tiny hamlet of La Tarea. This was our second stay, we had spent ten days in September when the weather was hot and sunny. This time we had come to escape the English winter. Although we awoke to snow on the surrounding mountains on one occasion the weather was generally sunny and warm with blue skies. Orange and lemon

trees edged the roadsides and the village gardens had narcissus and irises.

There is a large open plan sitting room including a dining area, the kitchen is accessed through an archway. The kitchen was well equipped and washing up was not a chore with the marvellous views of the mountains and campo. Furnished with two squashy leather sofas and a log burner we were as comfy as could be in the evenings in front of a roaring fire of olive logs, the house was clean and tastefully furnished, each en suite bedroom has its own terrace with attractive painted chairs and tables, there was plenty of outside furniture as well.

The owner of the property, Christine, lives in a charming villa separated from La Jacaranda by a high wall, the swimming pool which is open to guests is reached via a

wrought iron gate.

Chris is a friendly hostess, but not intrusive and has a wealth of information about the local area. Shops, bars and restaurants can be found in Turre, a small Spanish village about 10 mins away. The beach at Mojacar is a little bit further on, there you will find a landscaped stretch of promenade with all the accompanying facilities that you might want.

A getaway retreat that recharged our batteries

  • 5 of 5

We wanted a holiday that would get us away from the tourist trail. So we booked what looked like an ideal destination tucked away in a tiny hamlet.

Casa Jacaranda turned out to be a little haven of tranquillity with panoramic views of gently rolling hills, a private swimming pool - and not a tourist in sight.

The house itself is light and bright, furnished with mix of modern and shabby chic that made us feel instantly at home. Lots of friendly Northern hospitality was on tap from owner Christine Walton who lives in the old farmhouse next door. She previously ran a restaurant in England, and is an excellent cook. So we welcomed her offer to cook dinner one evening and dined al fresco sheltered by the gazebo that overlooks the pool.

After two lazy days of re-charging our batteries and settling in, we ventured out to the market in the nearby village of Turre, ten minutes away, followed by drinks and tapas in the local bar. By the end of the first week, we felt ready to embrace the challenge of the tourist trail (yes the one we’d been trying to avoid) and took a 20 minute drive to the whitewashed hilltop village of Mojacar with its narrow cobbled streets and houses that ,from a distance, resemble sugar cubes.

On the Mojaca seafront down below , the Mediterranean laps gently onto remarkably uncrowded sandy beach We stopped for a late breakfast in one of the beach bars - a feast of fruit, avocado juice, eggs and cold meats. Bliss.

This is a holiday I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who wants to escape the rat race and find themselves again. Good restaurants, bars, shops and beach life are all within easy reach, but it’s the peace, rest and solitude that will call us back again.

We will be back!

  • 5 of 5

Excellent location, ideal villa for us, well proportioned 2 beds, 2 baths, with a large lounge/diner and kitchen, fitted out in keeping with the building.

Lovely lady owner, very interesting person, very helpful, very good cook, excellent menu options, quality ingredients, good portion sizes and very well priced.

Sun loungers, parasols, 2 well placed verandas for an evening G&T and excellent views. Did not use the pool, but looks good for warmer weather!

Bar restaurant Solare in Turre 15 minutes away is very good, good meals and drink at very reasonable prices, good tapas and very pleasant staff and service.

I would certainly recommend this as a holiday destination.

Perfect location, accommodation and hostess

  • 5 of 5

I really could not fault this property for a relaxing break in the winter sun. It has the most beautiful, peaceful location in the mountains - perfect for switching off - yet it's a simple 10 minute drive to Mojacar with its stunning beach, shops and plenty of bars and restaurants. The villa itself is immaculate and has everything needed for a self-catering stay - anything extra, we only had to ask and it was provided. Chris really is an amazing host and nothing is too much trouble. We will definitely be returning!

Car: necessary

Coast/Beach:

Mojacar beach is about a 20 minute drive, as is Garrucha. Both have good sandy beaches, beach bars and fish restaurants. We are about 25 minutes from Cabo de Gata, and also Agua Amarga which has a lovely unspoilt beach.

Travel:

Car hire is essential. We are about 30 minutes from Almeria Airport, an hour and a quarter from Murcia, and about two hours from Alicante.

Distances:

10 minutes drive from Turre or Los Gallardos. 20 minutes drive from the fishing port of Garrucha, which has a very good Friday market. 30 minutes from the old film studios at Tabernas where many spaghetti westerns were filmed. 30 minutes from Almeria. 2 hours from the Alhambra Palace at Granada.

Further Details:

There is a small, but very well stocked convenience store and bar about 5 minutes drive away in Alfaix. In the summer months there is also a bar/restaurant, and plenty of shops, bars, restaurants and banks in Turre or Los Gallardos (10 mins drive).

Close to Cortijo Grande golf course and Rancho Cabrera riding school. Several other golf courses nearby. Close to Go-Karting in Garrucha and the Waterpark in Vera. Mojacar is a 'white village' in the hills about twenty mins drive away, and has a fascinating Moorish history. Lots of lanes and alleyways and Moorish arches, dating back to the 15th century. Souvenir shops and bars and restaurants. Mojacar beach has plenty of restaurants and beach bars (chiringuitos)
