Greta Hall is a stunning Grade I Georgian manor house situated in the heart of Keswick surrounded by three acres of garden, untamed woodland and river frontage. The structure of the house has changed little since the early 1800s and retains many original features; open fires, wood burning stoves, large bedrooms, cosy reception rooms, well equipped kitchens and stunning views from every window, it is a wonderful place to stay.
Greta Hall is an ideal base for literary scholars, walkers, cyclists, families, groups and historians. Bed & Breakfast guests have access to Southey's Study, whilst Coleridge Wing guests occupy Coleridge's Study and Parlour.
The huge garden makes Greta Hall even more special - a paradise for children with 'the best climbing frames in England', rope swings, zip-wire, trampoline and the river for paddling.a petting zoo with rabbits, lambs, guinea-pigs, hens, ducks & geese,
For grown-ups a slate BBQ and fire pit, a path through the woods, tables & chairs.
We offer a full catering service for evening meals delivered direct to your accommodation.

We can also offer a Housekeeping Service should you like one. Your accommodation will be 'freshened-up' on a daily basis: beds made, bathrooms & kitchen cleaned, all bins emptied and a general tidy, dust and vacuum. Come home to a lovely clean tidy house and a meal on the table.

The Coach House (sleeps 9-11) and sits high above the River Greta just behind Greta Hall. The huge upstairs living area (20m) retains the original 'A' frame beamed roof and long windows make the most of the light and views towards Latrigg, Skiddaw & Grisdale Pike.
There is a well-equipped kitchen area with double oven, dishwasher, microwave, DAB/Aux and Kenwood. The dining area has a huge table and the comfortable lounge area has big sofas, wood-burning stove and TV/DVD.
Also upstairs is a double bedroom, one twin room (not suitable for children) and one family bathroom with W/C, bath and overhead shower.
Downstairs there are 3 bedrooms (2 double en-suite), a triple bedroom. Also on the G/F is an additional toilet, hand-basin, tumble dryer & washing machine. All the rooms are beautifully decorated with furniture and rugs from Indonesia, China and Persia.

As a family it works for us on every level: as escapees from Hong Kong it was a dream come true. An alternative lifestyle using skills learnt over the previous couple of decades. For our younger kids it gives that traditional childhood that is sadly going out of fashion and schools that are forward- thinking with good and outstanding OFTEDs, for our older kids it provides the perfect antidote to hard student life and a good way to earn money when they come back broke! 'It takes a village/town/ community to raise a child ' and Keswick is the kind of town where this is still true.”

Greta Hall hosts a wide range of events and workshops on a regular basis. These include Still Life Painting, Words by the Water Literary Festival, Felt Making, Poetry Retreats, Bread Making and Up cycling.
Allonby, Silloth are long deserted beaches in a SSI (site of scientific interest) great for BBQs, beachcombing and sleeping in the sand dunes. A children's playground, The Gin Case (rare breed farm & tea room) architectural salvage yard, antique shops and a fish & chip shop make it a good day out).
St Bees has an excellent 'Blue Flag' beach around a 45 minute drive away. It's a good place to visit on a longer stay if you want a change of scene.
Keswick is just 20mins from the M6 at J40 (Penrith), about a 20 mile journey on the A66.
The nearest train station is Penrith (on the West Coast Main Line).

Or, enjoy the gentler side of the Lake District, visit important historical & literary houses & museums, paint & draw, take the Keswick Launch, walk and enjoy lovely tea-rooms.
Keswick is perfectly placed for visits to Honsiter Slate Mine, Hill Top Farm the home of Beatrix Potter, Dove Cottage, Rydal Mount, Lake Coniston, Buttermere etc.
Pets at Greta Hall
We are very happy to welcome your pets to Greta Hall.
Dogs are permitted into the slated area of the properties and we provide a dog gate to prevent them straying into the carpeted areas.
Rabbits and guinea-pigs can come on holiday too. We have lovely outside runs with good weather proof hutches.
Smaller pets are welcome too however their cages must be kept in the slated entrance areas.

The Co-op which stocks a wide range of basic items.
Booths is a wonderful (if a little pricey) supermarket which prides itself on stocking as much local produce as possible. Fruit & veg is always fresh and often 'just dug'.
In addition, there is a green grocer in Bank Street.
Thursday and Saturday markets in the Market Square have a really wide range of stalls... fresh local meat & fish, baked products, veg, antiques, plants many local artisans.
Keswick has a wide range of restaurants and cafes to suit all budgets. If you let us know what you're looking for we can give you a few suggestions.
HSBC, Barclays, Lloyds all have branches in Keswick. In addition there is a cash machine in the Co-op.
