Two Storey Converted Barn In Quiet Village With Spectacular Views Of Wensleydale

Overview

Property

Updated: 08-Nov-2016
Barn in Preston under Scar, Nr. Leyburn, Wensleydale, Yorkshire, England - Patio And Outdoor Seating And Bbq Facilities, Large Viewing Terrace With Pond

The Old School Barn is a detached 2 storey stone building situated in the owners' garden and is ideal for couples looking for a comfortable and peaceful break. The large double bedroom has a large, south facing window with spectacular views across to Penhill. A stroll to the bottom of the garden reveals a panorama encompassing Wensleydale from the Hambleton Hills in the east to the valleys and plateaus up dale to the west. The village stretches out along the stone escarpment and the houses are predominately around 200 years old having developed over the years into terraces as the spaces have been filled with cottages. There is a church (St, Margaret's), a small playpark and a village hall which holds regular social events including a soup lunch each Wednesday. Behind the houses on the north side of the street is The Stanney - a woodland footpath immediately below the Scar. It's a great little spot to have a wander or a sit on a bench to admire the views.

There are lots of local events throughout the year. Take a look at welcometoleyburn.co.uk for those closest to us. They include the following:

29 February - 11March: Tournament of Song

8 April: The Wensleydale Wander

14 April: Middleham Stables Open Day

17-18 June: The Festival of Food and Drink

27 May - 10 June: The Swaledale Festival

23-24 July: 40's Weekend

26 August: Wensleydale Agricultural Show

Mid-September: The Brass Band Festival at Hardraw.

Check out Tennant's Auction House and Garden Rooms for events at any time of the year.

About the Owner

We are Jan and Chris Jowett, a couple of born again northerners who came back "home" to our roots a few years ago from darkest London, where we ran a small building company.

Chris then spent three years converting both the barn and his torso into a woderful thing to behold. The barn, I'm very pleased to say, still remains so but unfortunately, Chris' physique has inevitably returned to that of the trencherman and Bacchanalian that destiny had always decreed it was going to be.

Jan in the meantime, made him his dinner and faffed around in the garden.

We look forward to meeting you.

Fantastic views from a fantastic cottage

  • 5 of 5

Set in wonderful Wensleydale with a view to die for, what more could anyone ask for? The cottage is a great find, plenty big enough, very well equipped , very comfortable and warm.

There is lots to do and see locally if you are not into walking, but plenty of marked paths from gentle to strenuous if walking is what you want.

Chris and Jan are great hosts; there if you want them yet discreet at the same time. What is more, the natives are friendly too!

We can certainly recommend this cottage and cannot wait to return.

A great place to stay

  • 5 of 5

Really enjoyed my short break in the Old School Barn. It was very warm, clean and comfortable and set in a great garden which still looked amazing in late October. The views, especially from the bedroom window, were beautiful, and it even had a piano (what more could you ask for!). The owners were very friendly and approachable. Would definitely like to return.

Stunning views and wonderful barn!

  • 5 of 5

The pictures for this property really don't do it justice! Absolutely fantastic place to stay, friendly owners and locals alike. We would highly recommend this to friends and family. If you are looking for a cozy, warm and peaceful break then this is the place to go. The barn is clean and very well maintained and acts as a great base to explore the surroundings which includes Bolton Castle. If you want to eat out I would definitely go to the Bolton Arms for a meal! It's a couple of miles from the Barn and well worth a visit although I would book in advance.

We will be returning as the accommodation was fantastic and we still have lots more to explore.

Autumn in The Dales

  • 5 of 5

Just got back from a fortnight staying in The Barn. We were lucky to have great weather and walked every day bar one when we were happy to rest up. Facilities were fantastic with everything we could need in this cosy nest. The bed and shower are amazing and the underfloor heating kept us warm. The listing description doesn't do it justice, it is so much more, sighs everyday with the view. Very clean and well maintained with walks from the doorstep. Our hosts were friendly, helpful and provided a tasty treat on our arrival. A fish and chip van arrives on a Thursday night which is a treat. We are looking forward to another visit next year and highly recommend The Barn for couples needing a break.

Owner's Response: I'm amazed that you took the time writing such a prompt and glowing review rather than getting on with your laundry! Seriously though, Chris and I are very happy that you have gone to the trouble of letting others know about your holiday in Wensleydale and that you recommend our barn and its views. Many thanks and we look forward to seeing you again.

Ideal holiday accommodation

  • 5 of 5

We could not have had a more ideal holiday accommodation for two in this part of Wensleydale. The barn was very clean and had everything we needed for a weeks stay. The owners are very friendly and the view from the barn is fantastic ! We would certainly recommend this property for those who enjoy walking this area .The Bolton Arms at Redmire is a must for a good value meal , but it is best book as it very popular.

Location

From the Owner

We bought the property to "do up", sell and move on, in a quest for the perfect place to live but after literally a couple of weeks, particularly as we had met about 20 of our new neighbours, that plan went right our of the window and we decided to stay! (We lived in London for 30 years and didn't meet 20 neighbours). Preston under Scar is a wonderfully friendly village. There's no pub or shop and there's no through traffic. When we have a street party, we just do it, no one else knows or cares!

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Leeds Bradford at 40 Miles Nearest Barpub : at 2 Miles Nearest Ferry : Hull at 70 Miles Nearest Golf : Catterick at 8 Miles Nearest Train : Northallerton at 26 Miles Nearest Motorway : A1M at 18 Miles Nearest Restaurant : at 2 Miles Nearest Beach : at 50 Miles Car: recommended

Travel:

Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle airports are about 2 hours by car. The smaller Tees Valley Durham is about 1 hour. Use of a car is definitely recommended, unless you are an avid cyclist or walker. If arriving by ferry, Hull is around a 2 hour drive away and Newcastle slightly less.

Distances:

Shops, banks, laundrette, pubs, restaurants and market in Leyburn 3 miles away. This is served by an occasional bus and there is an attractive footpath over 'The Shawl'. The 2 local pubs are both about 1.5 miles and again can be accessed by scenic walks. Both serve good food. Bolton Castle is within easy walking distance and other castles at Middleham and Richmond are a short car ride away. Nearby waterfalls include the most famous Aysgarth (7miles) and also Redmire, West Burton and Hardraw.

Further Details:

We are a mine of information about where to shop, eat and go sight seeing and are happy to suggest activities. There are brochures and information in the barn and also a local Ordnance Survey Map.

Facilities

From the Owner

We are in the middle of Wensleydale, which itself is in the middle of "The Dales". That means that Aysgarth Falls, Middleham and Bolton castles, Hawes, Richmond, (more castles), "The Buttertubs", and dozens and dozens of river and moorland walks, are either right on our doorstep, or no more than half an hour's scenic drive away. But seriously.... we don't believe that anything you see will better the view from the barn's own garden terrace!
