About the property

Barn in Preston under Scar, Nr. Leyburn, Wensleydale, Yorkshire, England - Patio And Outdoor Seating And Bbq Facilities, Large Viewing Terrace With Pond

The Old School Barn is a detached 2 storey stone building situated in the owners' garden and is ideal for couples looking for a comfortable and peaceful break. The large double bedroom has a large, south facing window with spectacular views across to Penhill. A stroll to the bottom of the garden reveals a panorama encompassing Wensleydale from the Hambleton Hills in the east to the valleys and plateaus up dale to the west. The village stretches out along the stone escarpment and the houses are predominately around 200 years old having developed over the years into terraces as the spaces have been filled with cottages. There is a church (St, Margaret's), a small playpark and a village hall which holds regular social events including a soup lunch each Wednesday. Behind the houses on the north side of the street is The Stanney - a woodland footpath immediately below the Scar. It's a great little spot to have a wander or a sit on a bench to admire the views.

There are lots of local events throughout the year. Take a look at welcometoleyburn.co.uk for those closest to us. They include the following:

29 February - 11March: Tournament of Song

8 April: The Wensleydale Wander

14 April: Middleham Stables Open Day

17-18 June: The Festival of Food and Drink

27 May - 10 June: The Swaledale Festival

23-24 July: 40's Weekend

26 August: Wensleydale Agricultural Show

Mid-September: The Brass Band Festival at Hardraw.

Check out Tennant's Auction House and Garden Rooms for events at any time of the year.

About Jan Jowett

We are Jan and Chris Jowett, a couple of born again northerners who came back "home" to our roots a few years ago from darkest London, where we ran a small building company.

Chris then spent three years converting both the barn and his torso into a woderful thing to behold. The barn, I'm very pleased to say, still remains so but unfortunately, Chris' physique has inevitably returned to that of the trencherman and Bacchanalian that destiny had always decreed it was going to be.

Jan in the meantime, made him his dinner and faffed around in the garden.

We look forward to meeting you.

Jan Jowett purchased this barn in 2005

Why Jan Jowett chose Yorkshire Dales

We bought the property to "do up", sell and move on, in a quest for the perfect place to live but after literally a couple of weeks, particularly as we had met about 20 of our new neighbours, that plan went right our of the window and we decided to stay!

(We lived in London for 30 years and didn't meet 20 neighbours).

Preston under Scar is a wonderfully friendly village. There's no pub or shop and there's no through traffic. When we have a street party, we just do it, no one else knows or cares!

What makes this barn unique

We are in the middle of Wensleydale, which itself is in the middle of "The Dales".

That means that Aysgarth Falls, Middleham and Bolton castles, Hawes, Richmond, (more castles), "The Buttertubs", and dozens and dozens of river and moorland walks, are either right on our doorstep, or no more than half an hour's scenic drive away.

But seriously.... we don't believe that anything you see will better the view from the barn's own garden terrace!

IT HAS EVERYTHING WE NEEDED FOR A SHORT BREAK. A VERY COSY COTTAGE, WE LOVED THE UNDERFLOOR HEATING..THE VIEWS FROM THE COTTAGE ARE AMAZING. THE DARK SKIES MADE STAR WATCHING INCREDIBLE. THE OWNERS WERE HELPFUL AND WELCOMING. A BEAUTIFUL PART OF THE YORKSHIRE DALES. CONVENIENT FOR ALL OUR FAVOURITE PLACES.

bijou barn with magnificent views

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from The School Barn, so named because the bedroom used to be a Dame school. Designed and built by the owners,it was very warm and well-equipped. Out of the rear windows and door, Penhill looms in the distance. We had a lovely time walking from the door to a selection of pubs nearby. To be recommended!

Quality Conversion

  • 5 of 5

We have just had a lovely 4 night stay in The Old School Barn. The barn is a quality conversion carried out to the highest standard....always helpful to have a builder as an owner! The huge bedroom is particularly impressive with fabulous views, which I am sure will be in even better in the Spring and Summer. The living/dining area is compact, but contains everything you could possibly need.....and I loved being able to keep an eye on what was cooking while watching my favourite TV programme. Well, I was on my holidays! Furnishings, crockery etc is all of very good quality and the underfloor heating is lovely. Jan will regulate this if you are too hot or too cold.Ther are lots of good walks directly from the village and Richmond is a short drive away....for those wet days. This was our first time walking in the dales, but we look forward to returning when the weather is better...and we can take advantage of the lovely garden. I would recommend The Old School Barn without any hesitation. Thanks, Jan and Chris for a lovely break.

Perfect cosy cottage with jaw dropping views

  • 5 of 5

My partner and I have just returned from the perfect Christmas break in this most charming cottage. It was very well equipped for our stay: all we needed to cook our Christmas dinner and lovely touches by the owners, Jan and Chris, with Christmas decorations, candles and chocolate to make out visit extra special.

The spacious bedroom upstairs affords amazing views of Wensleydale as does the outside patio area (although we rarely ventured outside due to the weather). The underfloor heating added to the comfort, especially when it was blowing a gale outside but then we kept ourselves amused by teaching ourselves the piano!

The village is delightful, stunning walks from the cottage, friendly locals and a wonderful traditional grocery store in nearby Leyburn where we topped up with delicious local produce - a glimpse of an idyllic England we thought had long gone.

Jan and Chris could not be more helpful throughout our stay and even assisted us in finding the most charming local church so that we may attend midnight mass.

A huge thank you for an immensely enjoyable stay and would definitely book again when we are next in the area.

More than anything else, I am pleased to hear that your stay was comfortable and warm and that the weather didn't spoil your enjoyment too much. As for the piano.....I will make a serious effort to get it tuned!

Fantastic views from a fantastic cottage

  • 5 of 5

Set in wonderful Wensleydale with a view to die for, what more could anyone ask for? The cottage is a great find, plenty big enough, very well equipped , very comfortable and warm.

There is lots to do and see locally if you are not into walking, but plenty of marked paths from gentle to strenuous if walking is what you want.

Chris and Jan are great hosts; there if you want them yet discreet at the same time. What is more, the natives are friendly too!

We can certainly recommend this cottage and cannot wait to return.

A great place to stay

  • 5 of 5

Really enjoyed my short break in the Old School Barn. It was very warm, clean and comfortable and set in a great garden which still looked amazing in late October. The views, especially from the bedroom window, were beautiful, and it even had a piano (what more could you ask for!). The owners were very friendly and approachable. Would definitely like to return.

Bolton Castle is within easy walking distance and other castles at Middleham and Richmond are a short car ride away. Nearby waterfalls include the most famous Aysgarth (7miles) and also Redmire, West Burton and Hardraw.
