The property is located in Murrisk village which is 6 kms from Westport, a town identified by the Irish Times in 2012 as "the best place to live in Ireland". About the Owner

I designed and built Gortmore in 1999 and try to visit as much as possible as I have strong family ties in Murrisk and love the countryside but I live in Leeds for most of the year.

Have enjoyed staying at Gortmore for many years. Always plenty to do - not least the challenge of ascending Croagh Patrick - not for the faint-hearted!

We have stayed at Gortmore many times and have always thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The bungalow is comfortable and well located. The area is particularly scenic and Westport always gives us a warm welcome with its lively atmosphere.

A delightful comfortable bungalow with all amenities. The views over Clew Bay must be the most scenic on the coast of Co. Mayo.

Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

We (2 adults + 2 teenagers) spent a week in Gortmore in August 2014 and all of us loved it.

The bungalow was so comfortable, spacious and well equipped. Our teenagers were particularly delighted with the Wi-Fi! There were magnificent views in all directions that with the ever-changing light continuously delighted and surprised us.

The location was excellent for discovering Mayo and Connemara, especially Clew Bay, Croagh Patrick and Achill Island. And the beautiful town of Westport is only a 15 minute drive away.

All four of us would have been happy to have had longer here, a week was too short!

I cannot recommend this lovely house highly enough.

Just Like Home

  • 4 of 5

I have been visiting the bungalow in Murrisk since 2001, first with my mum, then with my friend and also with my sister. Since retiring I have returned several times each year. It's just like coming home. The bungalow is comfortable and we find everything we need for a relaxing break.. The beds (all single) are very comfortable and the excellent heating makes the bungalow cosy in all weathers. We've been there in all kinds of weather at all times of the year. For sunny days some outdoor furniture would be nice.

The views from the kitchen are truly amazing, changing with the weather and the passing clouds. I've never encountered such a view!

Also, out the back is a superb view of Croagh Patrick.

The village of Murrisk is very handy for daily trips to Westport which is a great town for shopping and eating out. We love McCormack's for coffee but there's a huge choice.

We always go to Connemara for a day - via Louisbourg and on to Leenaun and Clifden. The views are best driving from this direction. Trips can be made to Renvile, Letterfrack, the Famine Loop etc. These are places with great character and wonderful scenery. Walking on nearby Bertra beach and Carrowmore (turn right at Louisbourgh crossroads and right again after about half a mile) are a must. For a woodland walk try nearby Brackloon. There's good information at the Tourist Info shop in Westport. Cyclists are very well catered for in the area.

A day spent walking on Clare Island is worthwhile and of course Achill Island is worth the drive.

By now you'll realise I love the place and at times when we couldn't get into Mary's we went to other houses and apartments. None of these attracted us as much. I think it must be the house itself, the care shown by Tom who checks to see we are okay and the fantastic Irish scenery. You'll not regret choosing Mary's bungalow! I'd highly recommend it.

Location

From the Owner

My family come from Murrisk and although I was brought up in Northern Ireland, I find County Mayo such a beautiful county. I chose the site because of the wonderful views over Clew Bay from the Living Room, bedroom and kitchen. The dining room has a great view of the pilgrimage mountain, Croagh Patrick. The bungalow was designed to be very light and airy. It is just off the main Westport- Lousisburgh Road so no-one has difficuly finding it. At the same time it is completely private on its own elevated site.

Activity and Interests

Special interest holidays:

Fishing: Clew Bay has many good spots for beach and shore fishing. There are also several trout and coarse fisheries within easy travelling distance. Lough Mask, famous for its large brown trout and monster pike, is only 45mins drive from the bungalow. Sea Fishing trips can be booked through the Helm or from The Shore Thing and Hewitson's tackle shops.

Painting: For the artist Clew Bay is a haven of marvellous scenery. Gortmore Bungalow itself is where the Clew Bay Artists group was originally founded.

Cycling: There are many opportunites for cyclists in the Westport area, including The Great Western Greenway which begins in Westport, and finishes in Achill Sound via Newport and Mulranny. This is 42km of cycling trail built over an old disused railway line, so it is traffic free, and relatively flat. Cycle hire and drop offs are easily arranged by Clew bay Bike Hire.

Coast/Beach:

Beaches: There are several blue flag beaches nearby, the nearest, Bertra Strand is just 4kms away. Old Head and Carramore beaches are less than 10 kms.

Surfing: Carrownisky strand, 30 minutes in the car, is renowned for its waves and is a popular surfing venue. Equipment hire and lessons are available from Surf Westport.

Travel:

By rail:

The Dublin - Westport train takes under 4 hours and the bungalow is just a short taxi ride from Westport station.

By ferry:

Irish Ferries and Stena Line ferries arrive in Dublin. P"&"O ferries arrive in Belfast.

From Knock you can hire a car, take a taxi or catch the bus to Murrisk. Other options are to fly to Dublin with Flybe, Ryanair or British Airways.

Distances:

The bungalow is situated 6 km from Westport and 13 km from Louisburgh on the R335 Westport-Louisburgh road. The nearest large town, Castlebar, is 26 km. The distance from Dublin is 258kms with a journey time of approx. 3.5 hours by car.

The nearest airport is Ireland West (Knock) which is 1 hour away. The budget airlines Flybe and Ryanair fly to this airport.

Further Details:

Visitors come to Co. Mayo for its scenery, blue flag beaches, outdoor activities and the fantastic irish welcome you will receive from it's towns and villages. Westport is renowned for its fine dining, lively pubs, many festivals and of course the holy mountain Croagh Patrick.

Dining Out: The Tavern and Campbells Inn are the nearest places to have a meal and a drink. Both are within easy walking distance of the bungalow. Westport town boasts several good restaurants including An Port Mor, and The Helm. For a comprehensive list see Trip Advisor.

Music: Ireland is famous for its traditional music and Westport is no exception. On most evenings many of the pubs host live music, Matt Molloy's (of The Cheftains fame) is the best known venue.

Walking: There are plenty of good walks, for all abilities, in the Westport area, a number of which can be started directly from the bungalow. For the more energetic, a climb to the summit of Croagh Patrick is a must on a fine day.

Sight Seeing: There are many historic sites in the area, including the famous Croagh Patrick holy mountain and Visitor Centre, Westport House and Murrisk Abbey and the Famine Ship Memorial. Or if you fancy something more adventurous you could try island hopping by kayak in Clew Bay or a day trip to Clare Island.

Horse Riding: Westport offers a superb horse riding experience in the unspoilt countryside of the West of Ireland. Treks are tailored to the experience and pace of each rider. All centres offer a wide variety of Irish sport horses and Irish cobs for their well-mannered attitude and sure-footed pace. Carrowholly Stables, Croagh Patrick Stables, Drummindoo Stud.

Facilities

From the Owner

All my visitors are very impressed with the views and with the kitchen. Sometimes they arrive at night and waken up to a complete mirror imagine reflection of nearby Murrisknabol in Clew Bay. On the practical side the kitchen has every modern convenience and it is spacious so that on a big occasion several people can cook at once. The living room is really the quiet room, but does contain the modern TV with Free Sat. Wireless Internet is the most recent addition enabling me to keep in touch with family back in Leeds.
