Lapwing House Holiday Home With Pool, Large Garden And Countryside Views

Updated: 17-Oct-2016
Lapwing House in Lairoux, Nr. Lucon, Vendee, Pays de la Loire, France - Village Location Within 15 Minutes Drive To The Fantastic Sandy Beaches Of The Vendee

Lapwing House is set in the small village of Lairoux in the Southern Vendee, only 15 minutes from the coast and beaches. The village is peaceful and is a great base for visiting the local countryside - either on foot or cycle, with many country lanes winding down the gentle valley towards the picturesque Marais (Wetlands) below.

The house is a restored old stone farmhouse, with exposed oak beams and limestone walls, so remains cool in summer and warm in winter. The house is well-equipped - with Wi-Fi, UK TV channels, dishwasher, washing machine, lots of games for the kids to play, and lots of space for the grown-ups to relax with a glass of local wine.

On the ground floor, there is a large lounge with TV (UK Free-to-Air TV channels), a separate dining room, fitted kitchen and conservatory/games room.

Two of the bedrooms are also located on the ground floor – one twin bedroom and one double bedroom on a mezzanine floor, as is the family bathroom and with a separate WC.

Upstairs there are a further two bedrooms (one double bedroom, with a twin bedroom leading off) and a shower room with cubicle, sink and WC.

The Games room has a Ping Pong table, air hockey and lots of toys for younger children.

Outside there is a dining table and chairs, plus a built in barbecue.

The 5.5m x 4.5m pool is set ‘above ground’ and has a removable ladder for the security of your children.

The private garden (1500m²) is south-facing and enjoys the sun all day and is not overlooked by neighbours. The main features of the garden are the pool and the many fruit trees - with apples, peaches, figs, kiwis and plums throughout the summer.

There is a secure gate to the village square and enough parking for up to 3 cars either in the garden or in front of the house.

The Edwards Family, August 2012

Table tennis, pool & satellite TV were all a hit (especially with the Olympics on!) Beaches all lovely – forest & beaches just past Les Sables d’Olonne were great. L’Aiguillon sur Mer and Luçon markets were good for food and to wander around. Les jardins du Lonet really enjoyable, and Puy du Fou great day out for a family with two boys (12 & 15). Local wine route very interesting – found 3 and enjoyed tasting lots of wines!

Train trip not worth the travel but all else fantastic – and the French people were very positive about our attempts to converse in French.

Lovely villa & lovely area of France

The Norwood Family, August 2012

Had a wonderful week here, loved the location, great house. Spent many hours in the pool. Hoping to come back next year to do some of the things we ran out of time to do. Had a great day in La Rochelle, loved the beach at Port Bourgenay and spent a lot of time in La Faute sur Mer - kids loved the go-karts.

The Braisher Family. Reading. August 2014

Thank you for letting us stay in your lovely, spacious house in the Vendée. We have had a relaxing time exploring the local area. Visited La Rochelle and the Aquarium which is well worth a look. The Château at Avrillé also makes a great day out - good for all ages! Local beaches are fantastic - how lucky the French are to have such a choice of superb beaches. Many thanks.

Great Family Cottage in pretty Vendee village

  • 4 of 5

Lapwing House is a well equipped family cottage in an pretty Vendee village. The private pool and enclosed garden are great for a young family and super beaches can be found within a 20 minute drive. Further afield - La Rochelle, Ile de Re, and Coulon are all within a 90 minute drive. We are a family of six and there was plenty of space for us all (there were 3 spare beds)This cottage can accommodate 2 families easily.

I would go back to this cottage and this ideal area of the Vendee.

Lapwing House, Lairoux

  • 4 of 5

Lovely house, bags of room, comfortable beds, well mine was. Pool was just right for cooling off and very safe for youngsters as it was above groung and had a removable entry ladder. Good centre for exploring, beach not far away.

Cleaning of the house could be better, a bit cobwebby considering the premium rates paid for this time of year.

Kitchen OK but the light over the cooker was too low and most of us had to walk with a stoop when in this area. The sink and working surfaces were very low and could do with being raised to account for the additional height of the English. Bar across the square very welcoming.

Charming, kids friendly location in Vende

  • 4 of 5

When travelling with 2 families with little children (age between 2 and 7), this place has it all.

A big enclosed garden with swimming pool, indoor toys such as a little air-hockey and ping-pong table...some toy soldiers, cars...

And private space for both families....bedrooms, bath room and toilet.

Shared kitchen and living room, both well equipped including WIFI.

Lapwing House hoilday

  • 4 of 5

Lapwing House has a lovely feel about it, very welcoming and homely. Fantastic garden with plenty of fruit trees which were lovely to pick each morning, the fig tree a must! Safe, good sized pool and a nice indoor play area, no grill for indoor bbq or bread van though. Had a great location for supplies in Lucon and plenty to do within a hours drive. Puy du Fou is a must for anyone!! La Rochelle and the seaside resorts at Tranche sur mer, well worth a visit. A very nice garden with a super fountain and waterfall in Lucon, a nice surprise, worth a visit too. The bar opposite the house is open only a couple of nights a week, but the owner is very welcoming and friendly, well worth a drink or two. The church in the village is always open every day with services each month. All in all a great visit in a nice charming French house. 9/10.

Owner's Response: We are happy that you enjoyed your holiday at Lapwing House in Lairoux. The bread van has been a bit hit and miss this summer, but luckily there are several good bakeries within a 5 minute drive.

Lapwing House

  • 4 of 5

We had a very nice stay in Lairoux. The cottage was well equipped and comfortable. The layout is a little open plan with the upstairs double bedroom directly accessed from stairs out of the living room, with no door at the top, and the upstairs twin room entered through the double bedroom. The downstairs double room is on a mezzanine type floor with very steep stairs and again no door. The downstairs twin room is off the same corridor as the mezzanine floor. This meant that there wasn't much privacy which was not a major problem with two families with relatively young children (9,4, and 2) however it probably wouldn't be ideal for a group of adults or for adults with older children. That said, the cottage is well equipped and spacious, the garden is large with a gate (completely fenced off) and has lovely fruit trees. The Games room is great and was well used (particularly the table tennis and air hockey) and there were lots of nice touches like extra beach toys and a box of soldiers/action men for the children to play with. The steps to the swimming pool meant that the children were not able to access the pool unsupervised.

Generally the property had been well cleaned and the owner's agent was extremely helpful and easy to get hold of. When there were a couple of issues (the washing machine didn't work whilst we were there), she quickly assisted us with a temporary measure whilst the spare parts were awaited.

There were not many facilities in the village, however we didn't find this to be a problem as we found a boulangerie in a nearby village and visited Lucon for groceries. All in all probably one of the more comfortable properties we have stayed at in France.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your review, and glad to hear that you had a good stay here at Lapwing House in Lairoux. The washing machine has now been fixed! Our village is less than a 10 minute drive to a town with many supermarkets, restaurants and other shops, and there are several nearby villages with bakeries. The house has an unusual layout due to the fact that it is a very old farmhouse that has been expanded and renovated over the years, and is now a large four bedroom house with lounge, dining room and large conservatory games room.

The beaches are fantastic & varied - with miles of sand suitable for sunbathing & making sand castles, as well as more rugged areas with rock pools and large waves for surfing & body boarding. Most have lifeguards during the summer, and all have cafés & WCs. The seaside resorts of La Tranche & La Faute are bustling in the summer months, and there are other much quieter areas as well.

The village of Lairoux is only a 3.5 hour drive from St Malo, 4.5 hours to Caen, or 6.5 hours to the Eurotunnel and Calais.

If flying, the airports at La Rochelle and Nantes are only 50 & 60 minutes away - both have budget airline connections from the UK or Ireland and car hire is available.

A car is essential for this holiday - to get to the shops, beach and see the sites.

Lapwing House is in the centre of the village, set back from the road in the village square. There is a friendly bar across the square.

Luçon is only 10 minutes away and there are several supermarkets, banks, restaurants & a lovely park.

Many of the local towns and villages hold weekly markets & fares during the summer months - with local specialities, seafood and wines all on offer.

There's lots to explore in the area, by car or on foot.

Further Details:

The Vendee is famous for its miles of sandy beaches and pine forests. They are great for family days out - with picnic areas and many small cafés dotted along the coast.

Further afield, there are the towns of La Rochelle and Fontenay le Comte, which are great for exploring and dining.

Another great day out is the Puy du Fou Theme Park, where you will be entertained by Gladiators, Vikings, Knights and Musketeers, plus the spectacular evening show with over a 1000 actors and fireworks display.

For a quiet day out there are many ruined abbeys and the Marais Poitevin - with its miles of canals and interesting flora and fauna. You can hire a boat for the morning and float past abbeys and beautiful countryside. During the summer months, this area comes alive with evening shows, festivals and weekend markets and re-enactments.

For younger children, there are many attractions - from the treasure trail in the Chateau at Avrille, the petting area at the Tropical Gardens at St. Cyr, or the many seaside fairs with bumper cars and crazy golf!

Horse riding, karting, Tree-climbing parks, a zoo, and car museum are just some of the many other activities within a 30 minute drive!
