Luxury,2 bed cottage nearly 700ft above sealevel with fantastic, everchanging views over the Windrush Valley,in our farming hamlet.Central for all Cotswolds attractions.

The cottage is completely self contained and is maintained to a very high standard, forming the western wing of the owner's house. The accommodation is split between ground and first floor. On the ground floor is an entrance porch and hall leading to the double bedroom and ensuite bathroom. A large travel cot/playpen in wardrobe. Please bring any baby linen and towels you may need.On the first floor is a large comfortable lounge where a log burner sits within a character inglenook fireplace. The fully fitted galley kitchen,dining room and a toilet off the lounge. The twin bedroom with ensuite shower is off the other-side of the lounge also. A walk in store has a table top freezer,games and cleaning items and a high chair. Beware HELEN, a rather large doll sitting in the high chair!! A small dolls pram that my grandson enjoyed more than our granddaughter!

We have a large garden and a two acre paddock off our own private road, where the chickens live. I have an old tractor for cutting the paddock and taking garden/ burning waste to paddock or our barn. There is a turning circle at the end of the drive which is private but unfortunately in spite of at least three signs within the village saying NO TURNING AHEAD, delivery drivers and large lorries ignore them, so children do have to be careful please!!.

We have a BBQ at the top of the garden and sitting area and herbs to add to your cooking. We have a terrace around the front and side of our living room with dining table and chairs and umbrella, and other seating to sit enjoying the ever changing views. Watching sunrise and wildlife and just relaxing before a busy day of site seeing or a relaxing after and planning next days activities or where to eat.A new POD is now in situ.

We have a green house at the top of the garden and some small glass cloches so please you must be responsible for younger children. There are also steps and garden tools etc.

A great operating base for the Cotswolds

We had a great time staying at the self-catering cottage of Julia & Mike. They immediately made us feel welcome: we enjoyed the eggs of their chickens on our first morning there and were also been giving a bunch of universal adaptors at the mere suggestion of having problems finding a compatible one. The bedrooms and bathrooms have all the necessary comfort, the kitchen is perhaps a bit out of date, but it’s especially the large living room and the views on the shared terrace that make this cottage stand out. Only weeks before had they installed some kind of bubble-shaped wind screen on the terrace, so that you can enjoy the views during perhaps not all, but definitely most types of weather. What else could I mention, but the fact it takes a 5 minute drive to stand on the beautiful bridge of Bourton-on-the-Water (lovely bakery) or 15 to be able to walk around in Stow-on-the-Wold or Upper/Lower Slaughter?

The new Revolving Pod on the terrace has been much enjoyed by our guests and our family and friends especially when windy and raining.A perfect place to sit and enjoy the views and watch the wild life. I trust your return journey home and the intended shopping was succesful. The kichen is old fashioned, like us, but is really too small to make radical changes.We have put in the new ceramic hob and fridge freezer this year and want to change wall cupboards and flooring in a quiet season. I have to say most of the lady guests say that this is their holiday and are not doing much cooking! Thank you again for your kind words and we look forward to your next visit. Julia

The property is lovely and very well kept.

We wanted to be in the country. We had a car and this was the perfect place for us. Julia and her husband are very friendly and we thoroughly enjoyed the gardens and farm life. The accommodations were exactly as represented online and were very clean and comfortable. The fresh flowers and wine were a very nice touch. We would recommend Farncombe to everyone.

A wonderful stay

My family and me have spent our Easter holiday at Farncombe and couln't find the words to thank the owners for such a lovely stay. They are a very kind couple and very friendly with children. The smooth communication with Julia before our arrival was a plus when organising the trip.

The village is in a good location to explore the Cotswolds. Although I don't know if there is public transport, I think car is more than advisable to travel around the area. It is also a less than an hour drive from Oxford.

The house is big and really cosy, just as shown in the pictures. It has wifi, all necessary appliances and very comfortable beds.

The owners have surprisingly sociable hens that my children loved. It was fun because they came to us like little dogs every time we were nearby!

All in all, a great place to stay!

We first bought a very small cottage in Blockley when we first married and did a great deal of renovation on our first leave.We used it on leaves over two years and let it when away. We bought our present house in December 1977 and moved in for Christmas, our first in UK for many years. Eventually we decided to put on a "Granny Flat" just incase either of our parents needed looking after in the future. They didn't and we started letting to holiday makers in the late 90's. We chose our Hill village with stunning views, peace and tranquility and away from the maddening crowds with very easy access to shops pubs etc. Our views of the Windrush Valley are spectacular and ever changing. Great walking for short or longer distances. We have three public walking paths through the village so please be respectful to follow the foot path code and do not go off the routes and PLEASE take all your rubbish home with you.

The use of a car we think is essential.Nearest amenities 3miles.Walking of course is a great option but do remember it is up hill coming home!

Bicycles are also an option but again we do have lots of hilly areas. You can hire bicycles in Bourton if you don't want to bring your own, ( or haven't got your own). A popular ride is from Bourton to Lower Slaughter and onwards up hill to the Swells. We do have many serious cyclists who are very well equipped for their new or repeated experience. You can keep off the main highways which of course are rather busy these days especially in the high season times.


We are centrally situated in the Cotswolds Area of outstanding Natural Beauty and every where is within daily driving visits.

Further Details:

Bourton on the Water and Stow on the Wold have plenty of shopping facilities, restaurants,banks and a leisure centre in Bourton with heated pool. Some guests have driven and parked in Bourton- on- the- Water then taken a bus somewhere interesting. Bus passes can be used. If you want to leave your car altogether then walk to Bourton on the foot path at the bottom of our drive. Anything is possible. If one of your party is a non walker then they could take the car to Bourton and arrange to meet in any of the coffee shops! A brownie, scones with jam and cream will taste extra special after your downhill walk!

We are within easy reach of many National Trust properties, Snowshill Manor, Chasleton, Hidcote Manor and Gardens, Buscot Park and House, Lodge Park, The Fleece. Street Markets are popular also and of course looking for antiques and collectables. Anything is possible and should cover all interests.

From the Owner

The cottage forms the western wing of our home and enjoys stunning views of the Windrush Valley in all seasons as well as the peace and tranquility and away from it all feeling. We are at the end of a No Through /Private road with open countryside.No street lights therefore NO Light Pollution with wonderful starlit skies. It is always fun looking for passing satellites or sun eclipses etc. The Blue Moon on 31st July 2015 was spectacular and our guests and us were taking plenty of photographs. The double bedroom ensuite is down stairs and the rest is upstairs to get the best of the views.The lounge is the full width of our house with the kitchen and dining room off also the twin bedroom with ensuite shower. Because our house is modern, only built in 1977, it is built with Bradstone, which is an artificial stone mixed with concrete and set in seven different sized moulds but it looks like Cotswolds stone. The old village houses are mostly built in old stone but we also have a red brick house, which used to be the headmasters house when there was a village school and the white house that used to be the school. The Windrush valley is on our eastern side and wonderful for sunrises and watching the local activities of wild and farm animals, the farming activities and the changes that take place across all the four seasons. The foot path goes past our drive and walkers often call out and say how lucky we are living here! My husband always says No Luck, we chose it!! Over the years we have observed that because or our unique position, guests have not achieved their goal of places to visit because of "time wasted sitting" so beware! Walking is a very popular pastime and extremely well catered for in this area so make sure you always have the appropriate all weather gear for your stay. Many people over the years haven't brought any and wearing plastic bags over good shoes isn't very successful! Flip flops in February was the biggest mistake, ok maybe in their city!

  • Notes on accommodation: We are sorry we do not allow pets- this ensures that those sufferers who react badly to animal hair have a holiday to remember for the right reasons. We also operate a NO SMOKING POLICY in order to maintain a completely fresh cottage for all our guests. Outside: We have a terrace at the front/side of the house with table,chairs and umbrella. A swing seat,all shared with us which has never been a problem and in the past has often led to impromptu parties! We have a BBQx2 at the top of the garden with summer house and more garden furniture. When small children are staying we chain off parts of the upper garden as we have glass cloches and green house etc. Both areas look over our fantastic vista which we love to share with our guests. Utility Room: The table top freezer and baby high chair. Vacuum cleaner,brush & dustpan,iron and board,floor mop and brush. Board games and puzzles. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All towels, 1of each- bath ,hand and face towels per person are supplied as is all bedlinen. Table cloth and tea towels and dish cloth and brush. All is clean for arrival and if staying more than a week all changed for the 2nd week at your convenience. Other: A separate dining room seats 4 comfortably. The laundry is shared and has two washing machines, 1 tumble dryer and an outside rotary drying line. You will have the key for access when convenient.
