Charming Well-equipped 18th C. Farmhouse With Large Covered Terrace

Overview

Property

Updated: 30-Oct-2016
Farmhouse in valley of Pimaquet, between Entrecasteaux and Carcès, Var, Provence, France - Peaceful Location

An enchanting stone farmhouse, (sleeps 6 + 1-2 cots) built for silkworms in the 18th century, when the French silk industry was at its height. The house has been recently restored and is well equipped, but retains all the charm of the original. A huge covered terrace with sliding glass doors. Each double room has a terrace of its own, climbing the hill under the ancient oak tree that shades the whole house. Mulberry trees in the garden, where rosemary, sage, forsythia, irises and oleanders tumble in rather un-French profusion. Plenty of garden furniture. House and garden face south-west across a little valley of wild flowers and vines, towards spectacular sunsets. A river for swimming, paddling, fishing, and a Roman canal. Shops, markets, restaurants, mediaeval villages, sport and culture, lakes and sea, all within easy reach. The peaceful valley itself the perfect place to stretch out in the sun with a book and a glass - or two - of wine!

A VERY PEACEFUL SETTING

  • 4 of 5

The Silkhouse is situated in a picturesque wooded valley with a clear trout river at the bottom of the valley. It is very quiet and peaceful, but there`s no mobile phone signal for those who can`t cope without being in contact with the outside world.

The property itself is quite quirky although if you`re 6 ft or over you need to keep ducking your head! The property owner lives on the site and is a fount of knowledge about places to visit, market days etc.

We found the Silkhouse to be nicely situated as a base for touring the surrounding countryside and would warmly recommend it to anybody looking for that sort of holiday. No good to anybody without transport though.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your appreciative review of the Silkworm House - alas, not made of silk but housed the worms, poor things, before all their beautiful hard work was usurped! That was in the 18th century, when people were smaller, so yes, you may have to duck occasionally! As to signals, if you climb up or down the hill a little, you can usually find one. Or one minute in the car on the way to the village or market or restaurant. Half the point of the Silkworm House is to escape the technological tyranny of the modern world. I hope that was one of the things you enjoyed!

Location

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

Enormous choice of beaches, from the fashionable to the secluded, sea or lake, all about 40 mins drive (longer for further ones).

Travel:

Marseille-Provence, Nice and Toulon airports, all c. 75 minutes' drive

TGV Les Arc-Draguagnan station c.30 minutes' drive

A CAR ESSENTIAL

Distances:

Carcès is 6 km away - but that's only 6 minutes. Entrecasteaux the same. Lorgues is 13 km in the opposite direction. Salernes, with the best Sunday market in the area, 15. The larger villages have shops of all sorts including supermarkets, as well as banks and open-air markets. And doctors. Entrecasteaux really has a chàteau! There used to be two, but the remains of the second one now make up several of the houses and alleyways of the village. They all have fun summer flea markets.

Further Details:

The mediaeval abbey of Le Thoronet very close. Aix-en-Provence, St Tropez, the gorges, Cannes, Nice and masses of other fascinating villages, each with its own character, within easy reach.

Notes:

  • Outside: Each level has its own terrace, and protecting them all is a huge and ancient oak tree. On the same level as the clothes line terrace, the Roman canal appears dramatically before crossing to another field on a half-hidden aqueduct. Below the main terrace is the garden, with rosemary, sage, mint, oleanders and mulberry trees - providing ample shade for your meals and your siestas. There is a large round table and plenty of chairs, some upright, some with big cushions - for being horizontal. The other side of the road, down some steps and across a field is the river - the River Bresque - far enough away to be safe for small children but close enough to pop down and have a quick dip whenever you want. And a pebbly beach for children to play on, and dams to build. It's ten degrees cooler by the river, so there are special chairs you can take down there and put in the water. It's ideal for reading or painting or keeping an eye on the children - or just dozing. Utility Room: Washing Machine in bathroom 2 Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen/towels available to hire. Final cleaning charge at €50 per stay Other: Huge south- and west-facing covered terrace, with sliding glass doors on two sides. Dining table and chairs and electric barbecue (charcoal no longer allowed). A garden with furniture and a summer house and flowering bushes. A river for SWHo only.
