La Hallotiere has 3 detached gites/cottages and a very pretty heated swimming pool (pool open from May - September all set in a beautiful 2-acre property, in the most beautiful part of Normandy. Each gite has its own patio/garden area with barbecue and wonderful views. The cottages can be rented individually or the whole site can be rented for groups of friends or large families. Only half an hour from beautiful beaches at Granville. Roads with very little traffic perfect for cycling and motor biking allow easy access in under 20 minutes: zoos and theme parks, 2nd world war sites, local lakes where they have canoes, also fishing and a fantastic golf club *Visitors in 2014 said this was the BEST Golf course they had ever played on! Local towns and villages proud of their bakeries and special street markets. Within 1 hour: Mont St Michel is a must, Villedieu les poeles where they are proud they made the bells for notre dame at Paris, the coast with wonderful sandy beaches, ferry day trips to Channel Isles.

The Gites are perfect for families wanting to holiday together as a group. Perfect for exploring Normandy and then coming back to lounge around the pool or play in the garden. Sorry, no pets.

About Christine and Neil Finch

Hello, we are Christine and Neil Finch. We purchased La Hallotiere in February 2013. We previously lived in Carshalton, Surrey.

We took early retirement from our jobs, Neil was a London Fireman and Christine worked in Oncology. We consider ourselves very lucky indeed to have found a property in such a beautiful place. We fell in love with the wonderful views the property has, and the peace and quiet after such busy lives in London.

We are very proud of our gites, please look at our website and you will see from our reviews from our guests that it is indeed a very special place.

It is an ideal location for Neil to pursue his love of motor bikes as the roads are so smooth and quiet.

We also love the good food and wine!

Christine and Neil Finch purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Christine and Neil Finch chose Le Mesnil-Gilbert

This is a brilliant base from which to visit the many and varied attractions of Normandy, WW2 sites, the Bayeux Tapestry, Mont St. Michel.

Our heated pool is very popular with our guests, especially after a day out visiting one of the sites.

Colombage has its own private garden for you to have BBQ's which we provide or just sit and read or look at the wonderful view.

What makes this cottage unique

We hope you like the look of our site, we fell in love with the views and peace and quiet, and of course we enjoy sitting in the garden in the evening with a glass of wine and sampling the French cheeses.

Guestbook comments from the manager

A wonderful, peaceful location and great place to explore local 2nd WW history. We took bicycles and had some beautiful, scenic rides, albeit a bit hilly in places for children. About a 7 mile round trip to the local boulangerie for the bread each morning was great exercise!

Our hosts, Christine & Neil, were charming, friendly and very attentive to our needs. The pool was a daily source of fun for the children in spite of having one of the coolest, wettest weeks in August!

The gite was very pretty and spacious enough for our family of 5. The rooms were clean & bright. Having found I was short of some essentials (bowls, sharp knife) they were provided immediately. After a week of bad weather, my only suggestion would be to have some form of indoor drying capability - draping wet swimming kit and clothes & coats around the gite wasn't ideal. The owner very kindly lent me her clothes airer when I asked for one & she also put our permanently soggy towels in her tumble dryer one day which helped the situation tremendously.

A day trip to Arromanches & the Mulberry harbour was fascinating. The beach at Carolles was lovely - sand & rockpools, and only 30 mins away. Great aquarium at St Malo was worth the hour's drive.

I'd definitely stay there again & would recommend it if you appreciate peace & quiet!

Lovely cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay in Stone House despite the weather. The Gîte is spotlessly clean and has everything you could possibly need. Christine and Neil are very friendly hosts and make you feel very welcome.

There are lots of places to visit in the area, Villedieu les poêles was my favourite village with a lovely market in a Tuesday.

The beautiful Normandy countryside was not spoiled by the rain, we had a lovely time and would definitely recommend La Hallotiere.

Perfect property & location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in The Columbage this is a delightful property so well equipped every thing you could ask for & more, the surrounding gardens are really pretty & well maintained.Pool is a nice way to relax after busy days sightseeing. We will definitely book again but bring the grandchildren next time they would love it so much for them to do & see. I would recommend this property to anyone who would like a peaceful place to stay but still within easy reach of the beaches & the beautiful French towns. Christine & Neal were the perfect hosts.

Le Mesnil Gilbert in February 2017

  • 5 of 5

My partner and I have stayed before and found the Finches very pleasant and accommodating. The gites are excellent, clean, tidy and the location is very convenient when travelling further as we did this time. Recommended especially for families with younger children.

Great gite, great hosts

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed here several times now. The gites are very clean and comfortable, they feel like homes from home rather than holiday homes. All the little touches make a huge difference, such as fresh flowers, bottles of Normandy cider, books, games etc. The peace and quiet is intoxicating, the best nights' sleep I've had in years. The swimming pool is fantastic, as is the croquet. Neil and Christine are fantastic hosts - there if you need them, really friendly and welcoming. Two lovely bakeries in easy driving distance for those wonderful breakfasts. Great restaurants particularly

L'Abbey Blanche which offers a friendly welcome and great food.

The gites are ideal for exploring Normandy and beyond. Fabulous beaches, Mont St Michel, the D Day beaches etc. Plenty to explore and do, if you can tear yourself away from the swimming pool! Already planning our next stay here, and would thoroughly recommend. Can honestly not think of a single negative!

Great, huge beaches 40 mins drive, at Carolles, Jullouville and near Avranches (direction Granville).

Donville les bains beach at Granville is fantastic for children, there are lots and lots of rock pools to hunt in safely, there is also a sea water swimming pool in the middle of the sand so you can swim safely and has lifeguards on hand. This is approx 40 mins drive from La Hallotiere.

Dinard airport, near St Malo is about an hour 15 mins by car. It has flights from Stansted, East Midlands and Birmingham - flight time 1 hour.

Flights from Southampton and Exeter to Rennes take around 50 mins and Rennes is an hour and 15 mins by car from here.

Our nearest village is St. Pois, this has a boulangerie and is very popular for the croissant run in the mornings. This is approx 5 mins drive. Brecey is a larger town approx 10 - 15 minute drive, where there is a great supermarket, bars and restaurants. The bigger towns such as Avranches, Villedieu les Poeles are approximately half an hour from us, you can visit the bell foundry at Villedieu and the market on a Tuesday. Avranches has a big market on a Saturday and lots to see there.

Further Details:

There are some lovely places to eat very close to us, please see our website for details of places to eat.

Le Neufbourg hosts the L'Abbaye Blanche (the white abbey) This is worth a visit and then the Abbaye Bar andRestaurant close by, serves wonderful food and refreshments at very reasonable prices. This is close to the Grande Cascade which is a most wonderful walk.

Also at Mortain is Karting for adults and children. Two and Four stroke engines.

St. Hilaire du Harcourt has a big market on a Weds. You will see live chickens and ducks for sale here. (you don't have to look!)

Domfront is a beautiful medieval town full of cultural heritage.

If you are interested in the DDay landings, there are some fantastic places to visit, Arromanches, where the artificial port was assembled for the landings is amazing, Omaha and Utah Beach, St. Marie Eglise, all have really good museums and the American War Cemetry at Omaha is just outstanding. These really are worth visiting.

For a special occasion there is Le Moulin de Jean restaurant, higher end prices but well worth a visit, lots of our guests go here if they are celebrating a birthday or anniversary, and they have always been very pleased.
