About the Owner

John & Annabel settled at La Chauvière and worked hard to create a stylish, peaceful and welcoming home from which to offer a tranquil French oasis away from the madding crowd. Annabel brought her background in interior design to bear on the conversion and applied her love of cooking to offer an eclectic menu, with a strong French accent, to friends and visitors alike. John brought practicality to the project based on 30 years service in the Royal Navy. He helped create the vision for the garden and the interior and also paints in watercolours when time allows.

Fantastic home! So relaxing and peaceful - everything we could have wanted. Great area with lots to do if you can tear yourself away from the pool! The Reynolds family, Kent. August 2013

A comfortable, well resourced property.

  • 5 of 5

The gite was very clean, well resourced that stayed cool in the hot conditions. The owners have thought through everything that you could need, they are very helpful when asked and also good at being inconspicuous. Annabel is an accomplished chef and provided a sumptuous meal and cake to celebrate my wife's birthday. The whole family enjoyed the pool (clean and warm, in a beautiful setting), particularly the kids. There are lots of places that are easy to commute to we particularly enjoyed Espace de Loisirs du Lac de Chassenon, where there was a man made beach on a lake that you could swim in. We also went out on pedalos and enjoyed the shade of trees.

Perfect holiday home!!

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing holiday in this beautiful property...from the first day John and Annabel were so welcoming and the bread and supplies they had provided were far better than any other place we have stayed. Our kids adored the pool and had so much fun practising their Olympic dives. We found plenty of great eateries in the area, and great seaside resorts within an hour. The house itself is very tastefully decorated and really felt like a home from home. The barbecue was really handy as the local shops sell great meats and fish that are perfect for sunny evenings after a day by the pool. If we could give another few stars we would, 5 stars isn't quite enough....especially once you taste Annabel's food (highly recommended). A perfect holiday home!!

Beautiful Stylish Gite - Fantastic Pool

  • 5 of 5

What a fantastic week we had! Super gîte - stylishly done, with tremendous attention to detail. Even the knives had been recently sharpened! Excellent welcome pack, with everything we needed to see us through the first 24 hours!… And what a terrific pool – with temperatures in the high 30s, it was a godsend. And finally John and Annabel gave us a wonderful warm welcome which made us all feel so at home. If only we could stay another week. Highly recommended.

WONDERFUL, just absolutely wonderful

  • 5 of 5

This is such a wonderful oasis to retreat to and our second visit because we enjoyed it so much in 2014. It's quiet, secluded yet just a short drive to the nearest village with a great Boulangerie and mini 'supermarket' The owners, Annabel and John, are the most welcoming of hosts and really put themselves out to make sure our stay was the most enjoyable it could be. There was even homemade jam for us on arrival as part of the welcome pack, yum! The farmhouse is beautifully decorated, clean and very stylish. The pool is fabulously warm with sparklingly clear water and John made sure it was clean every morning and ready for us to play and swim in. I can't recommend this location highly enough as a great place to stay, there is everything you could ever think of needing all there for you. We will come back for a third visit?..... YOU BET YOURSELVES WE WILL.

A Fantastic Week at La Chauviere

  • 5 of 5

We stay in many gites and villas and this was right 'up there' for ticking so many boxes. The house was immaculately furnished, it was in a beautiful setting and extremely well equipped, including use of a heated swimming pool and an outdoor table tennis table. The kitchen works well in tandem with the barbecue area outside, which is a great private area for guests. My wife and I enjoyed many a glass of wine there! The bedrooms were a really good size and one of our key requirements was satisfied - mainly a large (Super King) bed to sleep in.

John and Annabel were fantastic hosts and got that fine line between being there to help and allowing privacy absolutely spot on. If you stay make sure you take advantage of the dining facility as they are great hosts (and Annabel a great chef) and this was one of the highlights of our 2 weeks in France. We shall definitely return in the near future to stay in this property (which we very rarely do!) and also to get to know the Vendée better.

Grandparents & grandchildren all had a great time. The pool was a real success it was a struggle to get the boys out at the end of the day. The pool was their favourite thing from the holiday!

John & Annabel were wonderful and made us feel at home, nothing was too much trouble. Our only regret was we didn't try one of Annabel'

s meals but she did make us a fabulous chocolate cake on the one day it decided to rain!

The gite was so much more than we expected and had everything we could possibly have needed for the week. The beds were so comfy we managed to sleep in till at least 8 am every day (even the boys)

We can recommend Pierre Brune park & Donjon des Cimes particularly for those who are aged under 10. There's plenty to do in the area to suit all ages.

Would highly recommend La Chauviere

From the Owner

After a long search we found this individual property into which we could move and live without having to make major changes but which offered the potential and scope for development which we sought. Its tranquil setting attracted it to us, being in a quiet hamlet but close by car to a major town and with good communications by road and ferry to UK.

Activity and Interests

La Chauvière is part of a farming community and has views towards the rolling countryside which rises from the coastal Marais towards the hilly bocage. There is a microclimate which makes the region generally warmer, drier and less windy than the coast. The Vendée seaside resorts of Les Sables d'Olonne, La Faute and La Tranche sur Mer and the famous port of La Rochelle (gateway to the beautiful holiday island of the Île de Ré) are all an hour or less away. The famous ruined abbey at Maillezais (20 mins away) has Son et Lumière presentations in the summer and the abbey and museum (home of Eleanor of Acquitaine - wife of our Henry II) at Nieul sur L'Autize is on of the finest animated museums in France.

We are 3 hours door-to-door from the popular port of St Malo - dual carriageway all the way (N137 and A83) as far as junction 7.1. La Chauvière is then 6 minutes from the A83 (see map). Le Havre, Caen and Cherbourg are no more than 5 hours drive away. The nearest SNCF station is Niort, about 40 minutes away to the south. The airport at La Rochelle (45 minutes by road) has regular summer flights from UK destinations. The best rates (2014) for car hire are Europcar.

La Chauvière is situated in a tranquil hamlet less than 10 minutes north-west of the elegant medieval town of Fontenay-le-Comte and east of the charming village of L'Hermenault. The Château de Terre Neuve (Fontenay), the historic sites at Maillezais and Neuil sur L'Autize and the famous Venise Verte at Coulon are all within 30 minutes drive. The beautiful forests and lakes of Mervent-Vouvant are 15 minutes away.

Further Details:

A welcome pack is provided for you on arrival which includes those essentials you need to tide you over the first evening in case you haven't been able to get to a supermarket (let us know beforehand if you have any dietary needs or favourite choices and we'll make sure we do our best to include them for you).

We live on site and are always available to help you.

8 minutes away, you will find hypermarkets and all other types of commerce in Fontenay-le-Comte and a bakery, Tabac, bank, post office and chemist in the village of L'Hermenault.

From the Owner

La Chauvière's location places it within easy reach of some of the châteaux and other historic sites in the Vendée including Maillezais, Fontenay's Château de Terre Neuve (where Georges Simenon retired to write) and coastal gems such as St Gilles Croix de Vie. La Rochelle, Rochefort, Saintes and Jonzac are all within reach and wine heaven - the Bordeaux region - is only 2 hours away. Communications are good - we are 6 minutes from the motorway (A83). The nearest SNCF station is 45 minutes away from which the TGV goes to Paris. There are 3 airports within reach - Nantes, Poitiers and La Rochelle (the nearest - 45 mins).
