Glen Thorne is a three bedroomed semi detached Victorian home situated close to the centre of the pretty coastal town of Yarmouth and just minutes from the beautiful River Yar, the old Railway line and some wonderful walks. Yarmouth is a really lovely old town renowned for its sailing and with a good variety of privately owned shops, pubs and restaurants. Glen Thorne has a lovely homely feel and can accommodate 6 people in 3 bedrooms all of which are on the first floor. Here there is also a family bathroom with bath, basin and loo. On the ground floor there is a spacious open plan kitchen/dining area/sun room opening onto the garden. There is a cosy sitting room and a downstairs loo and shower. The enclosed garden which is mainly laid to lawn has a small patio area suitable for barbeques. Behind the garden is a garage which can be used to store bicycles, surf boards etc and a car can be parked either within or parallel to the garage.

Great House and location to stay

I would recommend this house if you are looking to stay in Yarmouth. Our family of 2 adults and 2 teens had a lovely holiday staying in this house. It had everything we needed and was very comfortable and clean. The house is in a quiet road and not far to walk to the centre of Yarmouth and the sea. The garden has use of table and chairs and we also were able to have use of the garage to store our bikes . The owner was very helpful and emailed promptly helping with any queries we had. This was the first time we have rented a house and I thank the owners for making it a good experience.

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

Glen Thorne is 15 minutes walk from Yarmouth’s family friendly Sandhard beach (which can also be accessed from the harbour itself by the harbour boat taxi). Sandhard beach is sandy, has safe swimming and has a dedicated barbeque area.

Surfing and the long sandy beaches of Compton and Brook are only 15 minutes drive away whilst the sandy bays of Colwell and Totland are within a 5 to 10 minute drive.

Travel:

Yarmouth is directly served by the Wightlink ferry from Lymington in the New Forest, which itself is easily reached by train or car. (The train links easily with Southampton Airport). For short stays you can have a good time in Yarmouth without a car, using buses/taxis if required. But even though the car ferry costs are high, the IOW in general, and the West in Wight in particular is well worth exploring in a car if possible.

Distances:

Glen Thorne is within a few minutes walk of the centre of Yarmouth where there are a variety of independent shops, restaurants and pubs. There is also the lifeboat, a castle, a pier and a post office.

Freshwater is approximately 4 miles away and has a small selection of shops including a supermarket and butcher.

Newport, the county capital, is approximately 9 miles away and here you will find the usual chain stores and supermarkets.

Glen Thorne is ideally located to allow you to explore the beautiful West Wight, which is designated an area of outstanding natural beauty. It is a wonderful walking area with footpaths very close to the house joining the coastal path after meandering beside the river towards Freshwater where there is a good pub for lunch. The river is a haven for a wide range of birds and dragonflies and in the woods along the river you may spot an elusive red squirrel.

All around the West Wight there are excellent restaurants, walks, cycle rides, golfing, crabbing spots and boat trips. Surfing and the long sandy beaches of Compton and Brook are only 15 minutes drive away whilst the sandy bays of Colwell and Totland are within a 5 to 10 minute drive. For those wishing to explore by bicycle, there are adult and children’s cycles available for hire 200 meters from the house.

The Isle of Wight is a beautiful island to visit with so much to see and do for adults and children alike many within only minutes of the house, and even its most distant attractions are no more than 30-45 minutes drive away. Visitor attractions range enormously from the stately Osborne House and Carisbrooke Castle to the calm tranquillity of the Ventnor Botanical Gardens to the family fun at Blackgang Chine Adventure Park.

  • Notes on accommodation: Well behaved pets are welcomed at £25 per pet per week but they must live downstairs and must not sit on the furniture. A travel cot is available on special request but please provide your own linen. Parking is either parallel to the garage or for a small car within the garage. The garage is at the rear of the property at the end of the garden and the access to this is an unmade up road that is very un-level. Outside: Glen Thorne has a private, enclosed garden mainly laid to lawn. There is a small patio area with a table that is suitable for bbqs. The garage is available for storage during your stay. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen, tea towels and handtowels (in the bathroom and shower room) are included for up to 6 guests and the property is cleaned at changeover. Towels are not provided.
