Cottage for two in beautiful lakeside setting. Relax or explore Exmoor's stunning scenery

Acorn Retreat, in its beautiful setting, is 1/4 mile apart from the village of Brayford and approached by a track through farmland. The spacious, 1st floor cottage-style apartment is the only holiday letting unit on the property so you will be assured of a peaceful stay. It is attached to Oakmead House but has its own private entrance and garden as well as full use of the 10 acre grounds. It is well equipped and well stocked with local maps and guides. Light, sunny and airy in summer; cosy and warm in winter.

The 10 acres of grounds, once a trout rearing farm but now in private use, is bordered by the river Bray and comprises 2 lakes and several ponds. There is abundant wildlife - wild Red deer, herons, kingfishers, dormice and the occasional otter can be seen. Our lakes are not stocked for fishing, but you can fly fish for trout on the river at no extra charge (when in season).

The mature gardens and woodlands are magnificent from early in the year, beginning with snowdrops, primroses and drifts of daffodils, then a succession of Rhododendrons and Azaleas and followed by the flowering shrubs and herbaceous plants.

A good base for exploring Exmoor and the dramatic North Devon coastline and countryside, but not too far from the full facilities of the old market towns of Barnstaple and South Molton. There is good walking, surfing, golf, fishing and horse riding in the area. There are gardens and National Trust Properties to visit and many other attractions. Easy to find, ideal location for both Exmoor and the north Devon and Cornish coasts, has every thing you need and moor in the property and great grounds to walk in. The near by pub has good food and beer try the steak and ale pie!!!

Fab property, ideal for a quiet weekend away from the city and away from the noise. Very quiet, property owners were very pleasant, furnishings and the property was excellent. Close to the coast and to local markets and only 15 minutes to a supermarket to top up for food, drink etc. Ideal forpets as well. 5* really.

We went for a Christmas break. The cottage was fabulous. Lovely decor and immaculate. We had our dog with us and, being Christmas, the owners Linda and George had gone out of their way to make our stay amazing. Home made mince pies on our arrival, (which were the best I've ever tasted) beautiful decorations and a bottle of bubbly. They'd even gone to the trouble of tieing a bow around dog treats for our dog. The grounds are beautiful and we loved all of it. Thank you so much Linda and George.

Absolutely stunning!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Acorn Retreat, didn't want to come home! The cottage was tastefully decorated, spotlessly clean and more than adequate for the two of us.

Linda and George were so welcoming (thank you for the yummy eggs!), and more than happy to share their wonderful property with us. They always had time to stop and chat, but not at all intrusive, encouraging us to explore every inch of the beautiful grounds.

I don't think we have stayed anywhere as perfect as this! Thank you.

You will not be disappointed staying here!

The eggs are from our rare breed chickens: Old English Pheasant Fowl - who only lay a limited number of eggs in the year so you were privileged they decided to provide your breakfast. We booked this cottage as a last minute short break and it was lovely. Linda and George were extremely accommodating, the property was well equipped and clean and the grounds were lovely.

Couldn't fault anything, I would highly recommend this little retreat 😀

Doggy Heaven

The apartment is well equipped and very comfy Lovely sunny private garden with amazing views. My husband, a flyfisherman, enjoyed the convenience of fishing in an evening within the main grounds. Not easy fishing due to overhanging tress, but he was delighted to be able to catch (and release) local brown trout, both in the river and the lakes. Linda and George were so welcoming. We would recommend this holiday venue to all particularly as there is so much to do in North Devon.

Saltburn by the Sea

Good accomodation in a delightful setting

The property was sold between booking and arrival but this presented no problems from our point of view as the new owners, Linda and George, did everything to ensure that the change was as smooth as possible for us. Our view is that the new owners could not have been more helpful, informative, generous and friendly. It was also clear to us that they have done much to improve the property for the benefit of guests.

The only aspect of the property which should be noted by future guests who have mobility problems is that the steps to the property are irregular and in places steep. This was no problem to myself and the owners took the trouble to power wash the steps to ensure that they were not slippery.

The kitchen was found to be well equipped and to a good standard. Sleeping facilities were of the highest order with a comfortable and new king size bed. The bathroom was also well fitted with an efficient good sized shower. Perhaps the most important feature of the property, towels and bedding was that they were all impeccably clean.

The cottage is in a delightful setting which was in the past a trout farm. The ponds are still stocked but trout are not farmed. Bee and poultry keeping are interests of George and Linda who are most informative on both subjects. We also enjoyed the fruits of their previous property which was an apple farm producing apple juice, cider and the English equivalent of Champagne. The land surrounding the cottage is totally open to the visitors and is a haven for wildlife. A bird feeding station outside the window gave us much enjoyment as it was energetically used by four of our resident tits, robins, chaffinch, hedge sparrow and nuthatch. The lakes attract kingfisher. Red deer roam the surrounding land.

The area has much to offer the visitor as it is on the edge of Exmoor with Somerset and Cornwall being within easy day travelling distance.

We have no hesitation in recommending this property to visitors to North Devon.

Real re-TREAT

TREAT yourself to a week at Acorn Retreat and RETREAT from the hustle and bustle of everyday living. A well appointed apartment with everything you need, wonderful surroundings, quite and within easy reach of coast and countryside. Owners Sally and Jon inconspicuous but always there if needed. Hope tho return again soon.

Notes on accommodation: Strictly no smoking please! 1 well behaved pet welcome. Dogs must not be left unattended in the accommodation, or allowed on the furniture and must be under control in the grounds. Regret we are unable to accommodate children. Outside: The living room opens directly on to the cottage's own sloping garden with lawn and shrubs and extensive views across neighbouring farmland and the grounds. There is a raised decking area with table and chairs. There is also full use of the 10 acre private lakeside grounds, bordered by the river Bray. You will find pretty walks on the leat path next to the river, around the lakes and by the lily ponds. Feel free to picnic or enjoy a glass of wine in a tranquil place of your choice. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Electricity, gas, linen and towels all included. The cottage is not serviced during your stay. Three assorted size towels, per guest, and king-size bedding is supplied per week (replaced for a 2 week stay), but please bring your own beach towels.
