Overview

About the property

Cottage for two in beautiful lakeside setting. Relax or explore Exmoor's stunning scenery

Acorn Retreat, is unique in its setting of 10 acres of lakes and river. It lies 1/4 mile from the village of Brayford and approached by a track through farmland. The apartment is spacious, well equipped and recently renovated to a high standard. Its the only holiday letting unit on the property so you will be assured of a private and peaceful stay. It is attached to Oakmead House but has its own private entrance and garden as well as full use of the 10 acre grounds. The super king sized bed with quality linen definitely adds ultimate comfort. The cottage style apartment is well as stocked with local maps and guides. It is light, sunny and airy in summer; cosy and warm in winter.

The 10 acres of grounds, once a trout rearing farm but now in private use, is bordered by the river Bray and comprises 2 lakes and several ponds, trails through the grounds, a hide for bird watching and picnic tables throughout. There is abundant wildlife - wild Red deer, herons, kingfishers, otters and many different birds can be seen. Our lakes have some brown trout and you are welcome to fly fish for trout both on the lakes and on the river in season at no extra charge.

The mature gardens and woodlands are magnificent from early in the year, beginning with snowdrops, primroses and drifts of daffodils, then a succession of Rhododendrons and Azaleas and followed by the flowering shrubs and herbaceous plants. A large area has been planted this year with wildflowers. This is ongoing work - if interested we can help you identify the different species.

A good base for exploring Exmoor and the dramatic North Devon coastline and countryside, but not too far from the full facilities of the old market towns of Barnstaple and South Molton. There is good walking, surfing, golf, fishing and horse riding in the area. There are gardens and National Trust Properties to visit and many other attractions. See our website www.oakmeadhouse.co.uk for full details. Also one well behaved dog welcome.

Facilities include WiFi. Sky TV, Binoculars, telescope, bikes and surfboards for your pleasure.

Fab property, ideal for a quiet weekend away from the city and away from the noise. Very quiet, property owners were very pleasant, furnishings and the property was excellent. Close to the coast and to local markets and only 15 minutes to a supermarket to top up for food, drink etc. Ideal forpets as well. 5* really.

The Perfect Peaceful Retreat

  • 5 of 5

I booked this cottage for the Easter weekend as a birthday present for my partner and we had the most amazing three nights - we only wish we could have stayed longer! The cottage was absolutely perfect - the bed was the most comfortable we've ever slept in and the fire in the living room made it so cozy in the evenings. It is set within beautiful grounds and is so peaceful, waking up to the sound of birds every morning instead of traffic was absolute heaven. We did some fantastic walks from Tarr Steps to Dulverton and Withypool and it is in the perfect location for day trips to Lynton and Lynmouth and Woolacombe. Linda was the perfect host - available if we needed her but completely unobtrusive meaning it really felt like we had privacy. She couldn't have been friendlier or more welcoming and we will most definitely be staying here again!

Owner's Response: Wow, thank you for that lovely review. Its easy to be the perfect host when you have such inspiring guests - loved your enthusiasm for the area. I am sure you would have romped up Everest if it was in Exmoor. Would love to see you both again. Linda and George

The Perfect Get Away

  • 5 of 5

I booked this holiday as a surprise for my dads birthday and parents anniversary. Prior to them arriving Linda was very helpful and kind giving me lots of information about the cottage and the area and arranging a payment plan with me to make payment a little easier.

After my parents unfortunately had to leave the cottage I had a long chat with them about there get away so I could write an accurate review and they just loved everything about their stay. In particular the grounds the cottage sits on and the fantastic hosting skills they received was mentioned. My dad would have happily have moved into the cottage (and he also couldn't stop talking about the bed) =]

All in all this getaway was worth every penny and I am so overjoyed my parents had a fantastic time. I would just like to thank Linda again for everything she has done for me and my parents and hopefully one day I might get the chance to come and stay with you too.

Cracking cottage and Exmoor gave us great weather.

  • 5 of 5

Thank you so much for making our much deserved break wonderful. Best bed I've ever slept in - and weren't we lucky with some great weather, walked our socks off across Exmoor. Great lunches at the White Horse, Exford and sitting by one of your lakes in total privacy with our picnic just made it.

Outstanding.

  • 5 of 5

We went for a Christmas break. The cottage was fabulous. Lovely decor and immaculate. We had our dog with us and, being Christmas, the owners Linda and George had gone out of their way to make our stay amazing. Home made mince pies on our arrival, (which were the best I've ever tasted) beautiful decorations and a bottle of bubbly. They'd even gone to the trouble of tieing a bow around dog treats for our dog. The grounds are beautiful and we loved all of it. Thank you so much Linda and George.

Absolutely stunning!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Acorn Retreat, didn't want to come home! The cottage was tastefully decorated, spotlessly clean and more than adequate for the two of us.

Linda and George were so welcoming (thank you for the yummy eggs!), and more than happy to share their wonderful property with us. They always had time to stop and chat, but not at all intrusive, encouraging us to explore every inch of the beautiful grounds.

I don't think we have stayed anywhere as perfect as this! Thank you.

You will not be disappointed staying here!

Owner's Response: How very lovely of you to write such appreciative comments. Thank you. The eggs are from our rare breed chickens: Old English Pheasant Fowl - who only lay a limited number of eggs in the year so you were privileged they decided to provide your breakfast. Thank you also for bringing such great weather with you !!
