About the property

Studio Apartment, Haworth, Yorkshire, UK - Tranquil, beautiful surroundings with easy access to open moorland

Whitestone Farm is a 17th century traditional Pennine farmhouse (non-working) at the edge of Stanbury Moor, 3 miles from the Bronte village of Haworth (a fine 3.5 mile walk over the moors).

We have lived here for over thirty years as freelance artists, and have been letting the Flat since 2008. From time to time we also support other artists with our studio space and hospitality.

The simple, peaceful and elegant flat conversion, tucked snugly between our house and the small barn studio, has its own front door. We use it when we run courses and workshops, but it is also an ideal base for for walkers, couples and small families with access to gardens and gates onto the moors.

The accommodation is offered for 2 adults, or 2 adults + child. A third adult can share the Flat for an extra charge.

Mobile phone reception is patchy and our satellite broadband is slow. You can keep in touch with the outside world but ignoring it is even more fun.

The large bed-sitting room makes a beautiful study or place to relax, with Freeview TV and a selection of up to date DVDs. There is an office chair, dining/writing table and extra chairs and futon sofa as well as the comfy (low) double bed and large 17th century wardrobe.

The well-equipped kitchen with electric cooker, fridge and microwave has a wonderful view over the Worth Valley. The shower/toilet has a heated towel rail and constant hot water.

Your heating and electrics, towels and sheets are all included in the price.

About Simon and Judith Warner

Judith & Simon Warner, now grandparents, are self-employed as writer and artist/ photographer, and established the self-catering and self-contained flat in 2006. We have lived here at Whitestone since 1983, and have a deep love for this part of the South Pennines and its literary connections. Judith has dramatised 2 Brontë novels for stage and radio and Simon illustrated Ann Dinsdale's comprehensive survey The Brontës at Haworth (2013) as well as the National Trail Guide to the Pennine Way. As co-founders of Whitestone Arts we host residential workshop courses here and produce our own mixed media performances. We are sister company to the highly successful video design team 59 Productions.

Why Simon and Judith Warner chose Keighley

We appreciate the open surroundings and remoteness (although we are only an hour from Leeds and Manchester respectively). This is a fine place for anyone interested in landscape and walking. The property lies at about 800ft, very close to the Pennine watershed, so there is a real sense of being on the backbone of England.

What makes this apartment unique

Our visitors love being away from it all, watching the sheep in the field, the birds in the garden and the frogs in the pond. You can walk straight out into open country, and Haworth - with its Brontë Parsonage Museum and steam railway - is only 3 miles along moorland paths.

Peace and freedom to rest and think or roam is the property's greatest gift to visitors: away from the road and a field away from the wild and inspirational moors.

Arrival from 2pm, departure by 11am except by arrangement. We regret: no pets, owing to proximity of farmer's sheep and wild birds. A low-tech environment with patchy mobile reception and slow internet: time to unplug and enjoy nature and rest. Outside: Property is surrounded by a large garden which guests are welcome to use (children must be supervised). Garden chairs and patio table are available. Utility Room: Deep sink, tumble dryer, heated drying rack, freezer Cleaning / Towels / Linen / bed changing service if requested: Towels and linen included (changed weekly)

Enjoy a wonderful stay in Bronte Country

The well appointed studio apartment is part of a farm house in a wild and beautiful valley on the Pennine Way. A large window looks out on a garden teeming with bird life and the moors in August were at their best. Simon, our host, was very friendly and helpful. He made us feel most welcome!

Perfect get away in Bronte Country!

The studio is clean and cozy and perfectly located for walks on the moors or into Haworth. Simon and Judith are lovely hosts, greeting us with fresh scones and advice on local dining spots. We can't wait to come back for a longer stay!

Comfortable stay in beautiful location

We had a great short break and Simon and Judith were really welcoming hosts. The farm is in a picturesque and peaceful spot and the flat is cosy and has everything you'd need for a short or longer stay. We travelled by public transport and enjoyed the walk across the moors from Haworth and made use of the local bus service to get about during our stay. Would definitely stay again!

Beautiful, peaceful retreat

My partner and I had a wonderful stay at Whitestone Farm. The flat is extremely comfortable (very cozy and tastefully decorated) and convenient, with a well-equipped kitchen. The farm is in a beautiful location with stunning views of, and easy access, to the moors. It's also very peaceful and an excellent spot for getting work done. Simon and Judith were very friendly and welcoming, as well as very helpful with tips and recommendations for the area. We would highly recommend a stay at Whitestone Farm!

45 miles (Lancashire / Lake District coast)


From Leeds/Keighley/M1 direction, head to Haworth. Then:

• drive west towards Stanbury and Colne, through Stanbury village, down steep hill past the Old Silent Inn (on your left), then uphill again along same road pass a Victorian chapel ‘Scartop Sunday School’ at the roadside on your left

• ignore a left turn to Ponden Watersports and Ponden Guest House, continuing on Scar Top Road that now skirts the north side of Ponden Reservoir for a quarter of a mile

• approaching the head of this reservoir, drive slowly: our turn is the first possible turn LEFT on a blind bend to the left. In daylight you can see our access bridge as you descend the final slope. At the turn there is a fingerpost saying Pennine Way, and our own hand-painted sign saying Whitestone Farm. If you take the next left turn saying ‘Weak Bridge’ you have gone too far

• over the small stone bridge, turn immediately right through a large double gateway (please reclose gates if you find them closed) and drive up the steep track through fields to our buildings (there is another gate to open at the top of the hill).

From M6, take the M65 and A6068 to Colne:

•continue on this road through Colne as though heading for Keighley. At Laneshaw Bridge turn right where a sign indicates ‘Haworth’ and ‘Scartop’ and drive over the moors for about 3.5 miles, passing Watersheddles Reservoir on your right, and roadside signs saying ‘Welcome to Oakworth’

• just after ‘Moor Lodge Country Retreat’ and ‘Scartop Shopping Village’ on your left, follow the main road forking right downhill (towards ‘Haworth’, ‘KWVR’ etc)

•continue past Silver Hill Farm, halfway down the hill on your right

• at the bottom of the hill, ignore a right turn saying ‘Weak Bridge’ and take the next possible right turn, before the triangular warning sign ‘Scartop welcomes careful drivers’. The turning is partly concealed by flanking stone walls but is marked with a painted sign ‘Whitestone Farm’ and a fingerpost saying Pennine Way

• over the small stone bridge, turn immediately right through a large double gateway (please reclose gates if you find them closed) and drive up the steep track through fields to our buildings (there is another gate to open at the top of the hill).
