About the property

Cottage in Morwenstow, Nr. Bude, Cornwall, England - Cottage Under 2 Miles To Lovely Sandy Beach By Road Or Footpath. Scenic Coombe Valley

Lee Barton Cottage, an attractive and recently modernised end-terraced farm cottage in Morwenstow hamlet near Kilkhampton 5 miles to the beaches at Bude, North Cornwall. Duckpool National Trust seaside beauty spot & sandy beach is 2 miles by road; also reached by a pretty National Trust walk leading from the cottage. The walk will take you to sheltered Coombe Valley, a favourite with walkers, the beach being at the sea end of this beautiful valley. Spectacular rugged cliff and valley walks. It is not known whether the origin of the name of the beach (Duckpool) derives from the possible use of the venue as a place of baptism for the baptist church (where those baptised would be immersed in the duck pool- a pool formed where the valley stream enters the beach) or whether the origin lays in the presence of ducks on this naturally formed pool. The cottage is in a quaint character setting on a traditional family farm (beef, dairy) and opens onto the large farm gardens.

Bedroom 1 has 1 Four Poster double bed. Bedroom 2 has 2 single beds. Bathroom with bath, overhead shower, washbasin and toilet. Also a downstairs toilet. Open plan living area now with a large widescreen T.V. (surround sound) & DVD. Kitchen area has an electric cooker, microwave, fridge/freezer, washing machine & dishwasher.

Linen inclusive. Cot supplied. Heating & electric inclusive. 1 night storage heater downstairs, electric convectors heaters in the bedrooms.

Adjacent off the road parking for 2 cars. 1 dog welcome.

Why Southwest Holiday Cottages chose North Cornwall

Lovely country setting in National Trust area of Coombe Valley, under 2 miles to large sandy beach at Duck Pool.

Coombe Valley is a great favourite with ramblers and walkers. Beautiful walks along the valley with stream, leading to the stream fed ‘duck pool’ at the entrance to the beach. A pleasant walk (under 2 miles) down the country lane to duckpool beach; passing thatch cottages, a quaint tiny ford (with footbridge) and finishing at duckpool beach. Or drive instead; free parking and usually plenty of room. The more adventurous may wish to walk the coastal footpath and along the beaches to Bude. Or stay & enjoy the spectacular scenery, with fantastic sunsets over the sea. Scramble up the cliff downs, or enjoy the pleasure of Duckpool Beach itself, a large sandy beach good for surfing. Or explore the 2 miles of excellent beaches extending all the way down the coast to Bude. Children seem to enjoy scrambling up the downs at Duckpool. On the edge of Coombe Valley are places of interest such as historic Morwenstow Church, adjoining Rectory Farm tearooms, Morwenstows Bush Inn and slightly further afield Hatland Abbey (worth visiting, a privately owned country house and gardens). Nearby Bude is one of the loveliest beach resorts in cornwall. A quieter resort in a rural area of unspoilt countryside. Huge classic sandy beaches. At low tide the beaches all join together and there are miles of beach and cliff walks. Bude is great for surfing, with surf equipment hire available-the surf championships are often held here. A feature unique to Bude is the large free open air swimming pool on Summerlease beach. Dogs are welcome on Summerlease and the main beaches (except for Crooklets beach). Enjoy rowing (you can hire a rowing boat) and walks along Bude Canal. Bude town has lots of cafes, restaurants and the like, and is an alternative to the busier resort of Newquay.

What makes this house unique

Enjoy walks or fishing on this traditional working farm. Wildlife is attracted to the farms ponds and woods and there is the opportunity to spot different varieties of animals and birds such as woodpeckers, kingfishers and even perhaps the occasional badger or fox. A short stroll from your holiday cottage is the ancient carp pond used by monks in the12th cent (one of the oldest such ponds in the country & featured on a T.V. programme). It is now set aside as a nature pond and there are often ducks and the occasional heron. The neighbouring pond is used for coarse fishing, restocked during 2010 with rudd, tench and carp (tench up to 3 lbs and carp up to 10 lbs). Holidaymakers usually catch lots of fish. The ponds are an attractive venue for picnics. There is a footpath/lane through the farms woods and circular walks, linking up with local footpaths. The lane leading from the farm takes one down a picturesque walk through the Coombe Valley and to the beach at Duckpool.

In Roman times boats used to pull up on the beach-it was a port associated with the tin trade. The name ‘Duckpool’ either refers to the stream fed pool being a sanctuary for ducks or more possibly derives from its use by the Baptist church for baptism ceremonies where the person, often an adult, would be fully immersed under the water. Kilkhampton village about 3 miles away has pubs/restaurants and shops. Bude beach resort is 5 miles away by road and has large classic sandy beaches, a huge free open air swimming pool on the main beach and lots of amenties as expected with a major beach resort; rowing (boat hire) and walks up Bude Canal and Bird Sanctuary, leisure centre with indoor pool and ten pin bowling, golf course and much more.

Peaceful holiday

  • 4 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday at Lee Barton. We took our dog who also enjoyed the large garden and surrounding fields. The cottage was quite adequate for our needs and spotlessly clean. We were met by Nichola who was very welcoming but did not intrude on our peace. We met George the dad who is quite a character and very friendly. As we had wonderful weather we really wish we had booked for longer - it was a lovely week.

Fished out!!

  • 3 of 5

Lovely location - very rural and peaceful. Friendly welcome and was shown the cottage by the owner. Cottage was small but adequate - nicely furnished and clean with all the usual facilities including washing machine. The cottage shares a large garden with the property next door - and you also have access to the rest of the open space around the other cottages.

However the main reason we booked this particular cottage was the promise of a fishing pond in the grounds - stocked apparently with carp etc. THE WEB SITE IS MISLEADING!!! The pond is overgrown and there are NO fish whatsoever in it and haven't been for a while according to some of the other regular guests who we spoke to whilst there. Fortunately we know the area well and my husband was able to find alternative ponds to fish in - but this was not ideal as it meant driving to and from this location.

Otherwise a pleasant stay but won't be returning or recommending it to others.

Owner's Response: The cottage owner is pleased that the holidaymakers enjoyed their stay and liked the cottage but is sorry that they were disappointed with the fishing on the fishing/picnic Lake. There are fish in the Lake and holidaymakers do report catching fish but it is not what would be described as quality fishing. That is why our description says. "A short stroll over to the farms coarse fishing lake (fun fishing, not for serious fishermen)." Holidaymakers choose the cottage to enjoy the beaches, Nat Trust Come Valley, and its closeness to Bude beach resort.
