About the property

2 character lakeside cottages

The two holiday properties, owners lodge and the Boathouse (which is not rented out) all form part of what was the Beauthorn Estate set romantically amidst beautiful and inspirational grounds sat on the banks of one of Britains most picturesque Lakes, Ullswater, and where it is believed inspiration for Wordsworth's poem "Daffodils" was drawn. The Cottage and Coach House are comfortably appointed in traditional style, with a cosy log burning stove in the Cottage and the Coach House features the best lake views and has a balcony with breathtaking views over the Lake and across to The Sharrow Bay Hotel and Hallin Fell. The grounds to Beauthorn Cottage and The Coach House are mature, secluded and enclosed and lead down the hillside to the Boathouse, Jetty and lakeshore beach. You are welcome to fish and moor a boat here if you wish. We have what is reputedly the oldest boathouse on the lake and it has two boat berths, one under and one alongside the boathouse. The Boathouse is not available to rent as a holiday unit at the moment.

About Richard

I manage the two cottages for the owners who are family friends and I have stayed here many times over many years, from when I was in my teens and then with my family. I even had my honeymoon here and it is a very special place for myself and my family.

Why Richard chose Penrith

My family, friends and I have been privileged to spend a lot of time here. Messing about in and on the lake or just enjoying the stunningly beautiful views from the serenel and private lake shore beach or just standing on the jetty, soaking it all in. Lovely....

What makes this cottage unique

Bring along your Kayak, Canoe or small boat, grab the dog and your fishing rod and get down to the private jetty and lakeshore and just have fun messing around on the lake. Perfect!

fantastic setting

  • 4 of 5

So lovely to be able to launch the canoe straight on to the lake from the jetty at the end of the garden. A peaceful setting, with wonderful views across Ullswater.

Cottage was very clean and had everything we needed, owners were lovely but not intrusive.

Plenty of pubs nearby serving good food.

Lovely place with the most caring owners

  • 5 of 5

We booked both properties as we brought the family. The properties were very clean with lovely views across the lake from the coachhouse. We spent a lot of time by the lake which has its private piece of shoreline. The owners George & Greta. were so welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. I will miss my morning chats with George putting the world to rights & Duke my dog will miss his morning buiscuit. I would certainly recommend if you are looking for a nice quiet place to stay. Will certainly be visiting again. Robin Dickens, Scarborough

What a fabulous location and lovely owners.

  • 5 of 5

This was our fourth, or maybe fifth stay with George & Greta and the welcome was as warm as ever.

The forecast was for rain all week but we had mild weather with the odd shower. What can you expect in the Lake District.

The beach is perfect for launching our kayaks and the dogs love the easy access to the Lake.

It's a short drive to several pubs for food, Brackenrigg Inn (turn right out of the gate) is the closest with the Sun in Pooley Bridge being our favourite.

We had a few steady walks by the lake deciding that we'd have a change from dashing up mountains and when the sun shines you can't beat relaxing and soaking up the view on the jetty.

We will definitely be back.

Delightful cottage in the most wonderful setting

  • 5 of 5

Very efficient booking process and a warm welcome from the owners. A setting to match any other - no wonder it is being considered as a World Heritage Site. Amazing to have access to a shared but very peaceful beach on the lake shore. Will be back again soon for sure.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for taking the time to write this lovely review Shary. It means such a lot to the owners, Greta & George to know that you enjoyed staying with them on the lake so much and it really sounds like you got what Beauthorn Cottage & Coach House are all about. Soaking up the lake (so to speak) and the jetty at the bottom of the garden. I know that they are also very much looking forward to seeing you again next year. Very best wishes on behalf of Greta & George Richard

Bring your boat, kayak, canoe, dinghy, windsurfer or Lilo!... but Please let us know first if bringing a boat as the level of the Lake varies considerably and it may not always be possible for some craft to use the boathouse & jetty for mooring purposes. If so it may be possible to use one of the moorings in the bay instead.

At the bottom of the garden is our own beach, boathouse & jetty right on the lakeshore and just a stones throw away from the properties down a steep but stepped bank through the garden.
