Delightful, quiet cottage with everything you need for a great holiday.

We stayed for a week in July, and found the cottage well furnished, clean and a welcoming bottle of wine with two glasses! The details for holiday makers were exceptionally well prepared, and our stay was peaceful and relaxed. We found plenty to see and do locally. and look forward to returning.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Oak tree Cottage. The facilities were first class and there was everything we wanted or needed. Nowhere was too far to travel to and everybody we met were very friendly. We will definitely be going back again.

About David & Ailsa Nurse

Dave was born in Norfolk, and grew up in High Kelling near Holt. After University, work meant moving to London (a bit of a culture shock for a Norfolk lad!), and now Surrey. But he still has a love for Norfolk, for the peace and quiet, the space to relax, and of course being by the sea. A love of scuba-diving (and yes, people do dive off the Norfolk Coast!), and relatives living locally, mean that he's often back in the area. Oaktree Cottage was a way to get a permanent foot on home soil, and is now a welcome escape from the hustle & bustle of daily life, as well as a home-from-home to our guests. We hope you'll find the cottage homely and cosy!

David & Ailsa Nurse purchased this cottage in 2010

Why David & Ailsa Nurse chose Briston

I grew up in a small village a couple of miles from Holt, so know the area pretty well. When we were looking for a holiday home we had a clear idea of where we wanted to be.

Not right on the coast. While it’s not a weekly occurrence, we do sometimes get sea fogs or drizzle even in high summer, so it can be cool & damp on the coast, yet T-shirt and shorts weather a few miles inland.

The larger towns can get quite busy in high summer, and many smaller villages don’t have a pub or restaurant, some not even a village store.

We think Briston has the balance just right. The coast is just 20 minutes away, the market towns are 10 minutes away, yet we have 2 pubs, great village shops, and being on the edge of the village, a rural feel.

What makes this cottage unique

We looked long and hard to find the perfect cottage.

It had to have the appeal of a traditional cottage, but without an impossibly steep staircase (if you've stayed somewhere with a 'Norfolk Winder' you'll know what I mean) or impractical room layouts.

We saw many with one bedroom accessed through another, or the bathroom off a bedroom. Some even had rooms opening side-on to the stairs (well my Auntie's house in Briston is the same, but it's a bit of a liability if renting it out!).

Oaktree cottage has that balance just right. The heart of the house dates to before 1820 (may be 17th c.), but the extension has allowed for a sensible layout.

And, of course, the location is everything. Peaceful, but not too far from anywhere. A good pub round the corner serving food was a bonus.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Lovely Cottage in perfect location for touring Norfolk.

We enjoyed every moment here.

Wish we had booked 2 weeks stay

We have had such a lovely time here that we have booked to come back! There is just so much to see and do. Blickling Hall is well worth a visit. We enjoyed some great cycle rides as well as the beaches at Holkham and Wells.

A great week – weather and walks. Walked mostly in National Trust parks and Sandringham. Couldn’t ask for more from a holiday cottage, and we’ve stayed in many. Really loved staying here.

Enjoyed our week in Norfolk. Lovely cottage, and supplied all our needs. Weather good so enabled us to go to many different places. 2 hour boat trip on the Broads was good fun. Countryside so attractive, and so much more to see, so we will return. Many Thanks.

Car: recommended

Wells and Holkham, about 25 minutes by car, are award-winning and extensive sandy beaches.

Cley, Weybourne, Kelling and Salthouse are all less than 20 minutes away, and are generally fairly quiet, even in high summer.

Sheringham and Cromer (both less than 25 minutes away) are bustling traditional seaside towns.

Use of car is recommended but not essential.

The cottage is about 16 miles from Norwich Airport, and 10 miles from the nearest railway station in Sheringham (unless you choose to continue you journey by steam on the North Norfolk Railway to Holt station 5 miles away!).

Nearest bus stop approx. 600 yards.

There is so much to do within a 30 minute drive of the cottage, from exploring the Norfolk Broads, to boutique shopping in Holt. We have some of the finest Jacobean houses and fantastic gardens nearby, and great cycling and walking from the cottage.

We are really centrally located for all the main attractions of the region. For example:

Coast - 7 miles

Norwich 17 miles

Norfolk Broads 19 miles
