Fir Tree Lodge is in an excellent location close to Lake Windermere with fantastic views and plenty of wildlife in the garden. The cottage is well equipped and well presented. May 2011.

The property was beautiful! The decoration and finishing touches were to a very high standard. The gardens and setting were stunning. April 2011.

Thoroughly recommend Fir Tree Lodge as a great base for a stay in the lakes -quick access from the M6, easy to explore Windermere and Coniston and The Swan hotel very close by for eating and drinking. July 2008.

Excellent cottage and beautiful area.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this cottage a couple of weeks ago and had a wonderful time. The cottage is clean, comfortable and very well equipped. There is a convenient 'courtyard' in which to barbecue and eat outside, the garden is spacious and beautiful, and the camp fire area is a real bonus. Helen, the owner, was very communicative and most helpful.

I last visited the Lake District 32 years ago and I'm delighted to say that the area is as stunning as ever and did not disappoint. Lakeside is a small, quiet area, but is well served by the hotel, the Windermere boat services, the steam railway and an aquarium - all of which are well worth doing/visiting. The Lakeside Hotel restaurant is a bit more expensive than an average pub but the service and food make it worthwhile for a treat.

I would definitely recommend a boat trip to Bowness and Ambleside, for shops/pubs etc., and rowing over at Fell Foot Park (National Trust) which is just the other side of the bottom part of the lake. I would also recommend a drive to nearby Grizedale Forest if you fancy a bit of mountain biking (exhausting but exhilarating!).

For the more adventurous, there is an incredible 'road trip' along the Hardknott Pass and Wrynose Pass; both single track, twisting roads through the mountains and affording absolutely breathtaking views. We carried on all the way to Wast Water where we went walking and had views of Scafell and Scafell Pike. Magnificent!

Suffice to say, I heartily recommend this lovely cottage (and area) and would not hesitate to return again in the future.

Fantastic Stay

  • 5 of 5

We have just spent 5 days at Fir Tree Lodge. It was in the ideal surroundings couldn't fault it one little bit, its a 5 minute walk away to the Lakeside Ferry, Train & Aquarium and lots of other attractions. We were blown away by the lodge itself and the garden such a lovely setting and what you see in the pictures is exactly how the lodge looks. The property is well looked after and clean, would highly recommend it to anyone as a good place to stay on your holiday.

Location

From the Owner

I grew up in South Lakeland, and still have family living locally. The Lake District is a fantastic place for children and we wanted our sons to enjoy all the activities and places I enjoyed as a child. It's great to be able to escape the city and enjoy the peace and stunning beauty of the lakes and fells. I love relaxing in the garden with only the sound of sheep and birdsong, and occasional whistle from the steam train. The boys love the garden which is big enough for wide games and has a 'rough' area for campfire meals; whilst Mark enjoys sailing and walking.

Facilities

From the Owner

We have private access to a shore at Lakeside - a great place for paddling or launching canoes (there's no jetty). And there's so much to see and do in the area - our favourites would include walking up to High Dam from the house; cycling in Grizedale Forest; the Motor Museum at Backbarrow, and the South Lakes Wild Animal Park at Dalton-in-Furness. There are some great places to eat in Cumbria. We love L'Enclume in Cartmel for special occasions. The Lakeside Hotel Restaurant and Spa are both excellent. I particularly enjoy a manicure followed by relaxing on the terrace overlooking the lake with a coffee and the paper while my nails dry! There are lots of historic houses to visit; and plenty of interesting little shops to potter around in nearby Hawkshead and Bowness.
