Cottage in Peak District, Derbyshire, England - Self-Catering Cottage Sleeping Up To Seven People, Well Equipped

The building now known as The Forge is one of the oldest buildings in the village. It was run as a blacksmith's workshop until about 1975 by Billy Clark, a well known local character and artist. Originally it was 3 separate workshops - a blacksmith's in what was once a 'one up-one down' cottage, a joiners in another two storey building and between them a single storey wheelwrights workshop. The central single storey building was extended to both left and right linking the three workshops. The anvil stands outside the front door and in the driveway is the stone on which the wooden wheels were secured to have their iron tyres fitted. It was in very poor condition when the previous owners purchased it in 1999. It has, since then, undergone a sympathetic conversion and renovation completed in September 2004.

Lovely home from home

Great place to stay with family or friends. Well equipped with a lovely courtyard garden. Great pubs in next village a mile's walk away. Carpets in bedrooms could maybe do with replacing but everything else top notch - comfy beds too!

Perfect Location for alks Directly from the house

This property is in a perfect location for walking with the added bonus of being able to walk directly from the house. One day we walked along the river from Middleton to Youlgrave and onwards to Alsop. A lovely round trip which is quite flat and not too muddy. Alternatively at the top of the lane, you can branch off right across the fields. Our week was blessed by glorious weather with only one day of rain. All the other days were blue sky and sunshine. We can recommend The Farmers Inn in Youlgrave to eat but do book. We booked for the Saturday night but were unable to get a table on the Wednesday.

Beautiful spacious cottage in lovely quaint hamlet

Love this cottage so much! We have returned on several occasions to this beautiful cottage. We always have a fantastic time and totally recharge our batteries in a lovely relaxing environment.

There are numerous lovely walks directly from the cottage door. We have walked down Bradford Dale on many occasion to go to the nearby village of Youlgreave. There are 3 lovely traditional pubs that all serve delicious homemade food. Our favourite being ' The Farmyard Inn' that has won several awards for its food.

Chatsworth House, Haddon hall, Dovedale and the beautiful picture postcard village of Tissington are all within 10/15 mins drive from the cottage and well worth a visit.

The picturesque town of Bakewell is about 4 miles away. There are some lovely little individual shops and a large Coop supermarket that will provide you with all the provisions you will need for your break.

Matlock Bath, Asbourne and Alton Towers are all close by. I could go on and on and tell you so much more but you will just have to go and find out for yourself!

Wonderful get away!!!

My family and I had a wonderful 4 day break in this lovely cottage. It had everything we could possibly need to make our break very special. We had walks from our door, bikes to use on the nearby trails and only a short drive to beautiful parts on the Peaks like Tideswell and Bakewell which we hadn't visited on previous visits. The location of the Forge is great in terms of access to areas but is in such a peaceful spot, just off the beaten track. This is definitely a place we will return to. The owners have obviously put a lot of thought and care into creating a welcoming retreat - which they thankfully, very kindly share!!

The nearest shop and pubs are approx 1 mile away in Youlgrave although the local milkman calls regularly and can also supply eggs yogurts drinks etc.

Further Details:

Middleton-by-Youlgreave is a small picturesque village at the head of Middleton Dale. It is an excellent base for exploring the White Peak area by foot, cycle or car and, for those simply wishing to relax, offers the peace and quiet of the unspoilt English countryside. There is a well equipped children's playground near-by.

About a mile, and a very pleasant walk away, is the village of Youlgrave with shops, a Post Office and three pubs all serving meals at lunchtime and in the evening.

The pretty market town of Bakewell is a short drive away and there is a bus service from Middleton -by-Youlgrave.

Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are easily accessible as are the spa towns of Matlock and Buxton.
