Cottage in Canterbury, Kent, England - Situated Between Canterbury And Sandwich, Bus Stop Near And Organic Farm Shop On Doorstep

Set in a pretty courtyard,The Stables provides a period setting with 21st century amenities. The interiors have been thoughtfully decorated and furnished with style and comfort in mind; using beautiful English Oak, Heritage and eco products to attain an understated elegance. Comfort and Quality has been the main criteria. Great emphasis has been put into providing everything needed to make your stay unforgettable. Situated between Sandwich and Canterbury, we are ideally placed for visiting this outstanding area of England; along with easy access to ports for trips to France and beyond. Kent International Airport and Dover Docks are 25 minutes away and Ashford International Station for Eurostar is around 45 minutes drive. We can reserve theatre tickets, tables in restaurants, travel tickets. We have a small menu of food which, given notice the day before, can be put into your fridge the following day to await your return.

About Anne Jolin

We have lived here for 30 years, and Rob has done all the building work himself. Nothing had been done to the house or the outbuildings for years, and it's been a labour of love to restore it. Originally a Market Garden, over the years the land was sold off, and when we came it only had an acre left.The house was built in 1703, and rumour has it that the original barn was burnt down during the Peasant's Revolt. The Roman road which led from Richborough (where the Romans first landed in Britain), runs directly in front of the house. The cottages are set in a pretty courtyard. We are on-site to give you as much (or as little!) help as you need to make sure your stay with us is memorable. We always welcome our guests personally, and will do all we can to make sure you enjoy your holiday.

Why Anne Jolin chose Wingham

We have been here 30 years. We moved here to be away from the town, and to enjoy a more relaxed way of life. Having said that, we didn't want to be too far away from shops, motorways etc, so think we have the perfect spot! We are ideally situated to explore Kent, and many of our guests do a day trip to France as we are only 25 minutes away from the Ferry port of Dover and Eurotunnel. In fact, one of our guests went to Paris for the day, going on Eurostar from Ashford! We have many fine farm shops locally, some with excellent restaurants selling their own produce. There is so much history in this corner of Kent, with a wealth of castles to visit. The White cliffs at Dover are iconic, and Leeds Castle is stunning. If gardens are your interest, Sissinghurst is amazing. The shops are good too!

What makes this cottage unique

Although we are on a main road, the house and cottages are set well back, and enjoy a peaceful setting, where you can hear the birds singing. We have jays, both species of woodpeckers, and many more interesting birds visiting the gardens. We are ideally placed to visit all the attractions in Kent, and also to take advantage of day trips to France, and to Paris via Eurostar.

We are within easy walking distance of a suberb small animal park - Wingham Wildlife Park. You can often hear the lions roaring, and the monkeys chattering in the mornings (don't worry, they haven't had any escapees!) We offer an oasis to return to after a busy day sightseeing. We have a bus stop within 50 yards to take you to Canterbury, Sandwich, Deal without having to worry about parking the car. We also provide an Nespresso coffee machine.

Notes on accommodation: Centrally heated, the cottage is fully insulated and stays warm in Winter and cool in Summer. Terracotta floor tiles throughout, with rugs. Outside: Private terrace overlooking the garden. Table and chairs with parasol. Utility Room: A larger freezer, ironing board and iron, tumble dryer and space for suitcases is provided in The Old Bakehouse opposite the cottage, along with the recycling boxes. Hoover, washing basket and airer, pegs. Picnic basket and rug for guest's use. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: We provide all linen and bath towels, all kitchen towels, paper towels, cleaning materials, shower gel, dishwasher tablets etc.- even loo rolls! You will not have to bring anything. The cottages are cleaned weekly, when beds and towels are changed.

Very welcoming - nice touch with the flowers and card. Helpful but left to enjoy our holiday. Very clean and well maintained and equipped. Loved the fact that we didn't need to used the car to get around. The local pub was appreciated as were the bought in meals. Would certainly stay again if in the area.

absolutely the perfect holiday will not want for anything extra. anne & rob have worked hard and thought of every thing you might need for a complete relaxing holiday,beautiful gardens to enjoy the complimentary bottle of wine ,in the evening & enjoy the welcome hamper for breakfast. the stables are very clean,very comfortable & bright. kitchen has every thing you will every need plus other items you think "now why have i not got one of those. do try the frozen food that can be supplied,will be delivered (24 hr notice) it is superb,extremely tasty and a joy to eat on your own terrace overlooking the gardens. the website description for "the stables" are accurate & it was a pleasure to stay there. anne & rob are the best owner/host you could wish for,very friendly & knowledgeable about the could not wish for someone better. anne & rob should be proud for what they have done.

Fabulous - A hidden gem of a cottage

The description and photos of the property do not do it justice. Its way way better. The facilities were just perfect for two and all finishes to a very high standard. Ann and Rob were very friendly and provided a helpful hamper and fresh flowers for our arrival. Many local places to eat, and within short driving distance of all major towns in East Kent. The most relaxing week I have had in years, and will certainly hope to return.

Perfect cottage

We enjoyed our week staying in The Stables which was beautifully restored and decorated. Anne and Rob extended a warm welcome which included a lovely food hamper with lots of goodies - a thoughtful touch. The cottage was very comfortable and was immaculately clean. Anne had thought of everything you might need to make your stay perfect. There was a delightful terrace to rear of cottage which looked onto lovely gardens - perfect for relaxing over breakfast. A great location for sightseeing in East Kent.

Car: recommended


We are no more than 20 minutes away from a beach, and have the coastal resorts of Broadstairs, Ramsgate, Margate, Deal, Dover, Whitstable and Herne Bay close by.


Although a car is useful to get around, we have a bus stop within 50 yards of the cottage. The nearest railway station is 4 miles away in Sandwich, and Canterbury is 20 minutes away by bus or car. The ports of Ramsgate and Dover are 20 minutes away, and Eurotunnel is 25-30 minutes away, depending on traffic. Kent International airport is 20 minutes away, and Gatwick is 1 hour 20 minutes. Canterbury West station has a fast train to London taking 55 minutes, Eurostar to Paris from Ashford.


Local villages Wingham and Ash are 3 minutes away. Sandwich is 10 minutes away. Canterbury, Dover, Deal and Ramsgate are 20 minutes away. Whitstable is 30 minutes. We are rich in castles in this area, with Dover and Leeds castles being spectacular! Sissinghurst garden is just over an hour, and Churchill's home, Chartwell about the same. We have Howletts Zoo 10 minutes away, with a smaller (but just as interesting) Wingham Wildlife Park a 10 minute walk away. The Turner Gallery is at Margate.

Further Details:

Wingham Country Market. Our local farm shop, with an extensive variety of organic produce, from household cleaning products to their own-grown fruit and veg, and fresh bread – 2/3 minutes walk. There are other excellent farm shops locally, and all major supermarkets within 20 mins drive. Sandwich (5 mins away) has a very good Co-op. There are good restaurants in Sandwich, Canterbury and Deal. Rocksalt in Folkestone is run by Mark Sargeant, Gordon Ramsay's erstwhile head chef. There is a branch of Lloyds bank in Wingham, a few minutes away in the car, and all major banks in Canterbury. Just up the road is a coarse fishing park, with several lakes.

Booking Notes:
We require a 50% deposit, with the balance payable within 6 weeks of your stay. A damage/loss deposit (refundable after your stay, within 14 days) of £150 is also payable. If you book within 6 weeks of your stay, the whole amount is payable.

Changeover Day:
Changeover day is Saturday, but we will try to fit in with your travel plans if we can. Check-in time is after 3pm on day of arrival, and check-out time by 10am on day of departure. Again, these can be flexible.

Notes on prices:
We tend to only do short breaks in the Winter months, but it's always worth asking; if we have availability, we'll do it! We ask for a damage/loss deposit of £150 for each stay.
