About the property

Ludwell House,Torquay, TQ1 3NH

Ludwell House is a Victorian Villa set within the sought-after Cary Park conservation area of Babbacome, Torquay. We have three spacious holiday apartments all overlooking the park or gardens. Our house is a short level walk to the Downs at Babbacombe and a five minute bus or car drive to the centre of Torquay. The local buses can take you all over South Devon and beyond but our favourite runs down to the harbour where you can take a stroll along the promenade stopping at one of the many cafes, bars and restaurants around the marina or why not take a boat trip? - a cruise round the bay or even a day boat trip to Brixham or Dartmouth.

Within a five minute level walk of Ludwell House you will find beautiful Babbacombe Bay which is famed for its natural beauty, fabulous views, lively cafes and restaurants, theatre and superb attractions.

After taking in the panoramic views from Babbacombe Downs, you can walk down the winding path or catch the historic Babbacombe Cliff Railway to the unspoilt sandy cove below. Originally a haunt of fishermen and smugglers, Babbacombe Beach is now a haven for swimming, relaxing, scuba diving, boating and angling.

At the foot of the cliff railway is the popular Babbacombe Beach Café and a short stroll along to the other end of this magnificent cove you’ll discover the renowned Cary Arms, known as the Inn on the Beach with great gastropub fare and a beautiful terrace where you can sip chilled drinks whilst soaking up the amazing view or watch the sunset. There is much more to Babbacombe Bay than its lovely beach.  A wealth of delightful independent shops, restaurants and cafes can be found on the Downs as well as in town and along the pedestrian-only precinct at St Marychurch.

There is a whole range of eateries and traditional fish and chips can’t be bettered here with the award-winning Hanbury’s where they serve freshly caught Brixham fish and the most delicious homemade chips or down on Torquay Harbourside try Mitch Tonks - Rockfish for superb fish and chips and excellent local seafood specialities.   The Cary Arms on Babbacombe Beach is famous for its gastropub food in an idyllic setting. St Marychurch boasts a deli, chocolate shop, a fishmonger with fresh fish daily from Brixham, Teignmouth and even a cheese shop which specialises in West Country cheeses.

Families will love Babbacombe Model Village with its 4 acres of beautiful, award-winning gardens that is recognised as one of the best model villages in the world.  Also don’t miss Bygones, an exciting feast of nostalgia over three floors that brings the past alive with its life size Victorian Street, Model Railway, World War I Trench and much more.

Perfect for strolling, beautiful Babbacombe Downs has reputedly got highest cliff top promenade in England and on a clear day you can see right across to Portland Bill in Dorset.  Stroll around the delightful shops or take the Cliff Railway down to Oddicombe Beach and walk right along to Babbacombe Beach. You can also walk much further along the coast via the spectacular South West Coast Path.

Located on the edge of Torquay, St Marychurch is just a little further on from the iconic red stone cliffs of Babbacombe, and is one of the undiscovered jewels of the English Riviera. With it’s village ambience and a pedestrianised centre it has lots of independently owned shops and its unique personality is why so many people fall in love with St Marychurch and come back year after year.

Babbacombe Beach is a renowned scuba diving site, ideal for beginners or the more experienced and it’s a great place for sailing and angling. Slightly further afield in Torquay are Meadfoot Beach and Abbey Sands and at Paignton you will find the glorious Goodrington Sands, where the steam railway runs right behind the beach.

The English Riviera Towns of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham may be famous for their award winning beaches and exotic palm trees but they have so much more to offer than just seaside holidays as well as having a UNESCO designation as a Global Geopark.

Agatha Christie is probably our best known resident, she was born in Torquay in 1933 and she later had a holiday home at nearby Greenway House, now owned by the National Trust. If you come in September you will arrive at the time of the annual Agatha Christie festival, or in May you can take part in the unique Brixham Pirate Festival, for full details about these events and many more and for more information about our beautiful part of South Devon please take a look at www.englishriviera.co.uk. Here you will find masses of ideas for days out within an easy walk or bus ride of Ludwell House and also places slightly further afield such as the historic port of Dartmouth, Salcombe the beaches of the South Hams and of course beautiful Dartmoor which is about 35 minutes away by car.

About Ian Doyle & Karen Clarke

Ludwell House is a family run business. We live in Torquay and have owned Ludwell House for 12 years. We do feel blessed to be so close to the beaches and wonderful countryside that South Devon has to offer. We have spent many years renovating Ludwell House to make it a really comfortable home from home for your holidays.

Ian Doyle & Karen Clarke purchased this apartment in 2000

Why Ian Doyle & Karen Clarke chose South Hams

We bought Ludwell House because it is a lovely Victorian Villa( c1890) set within the Cary Park conservation area of Babbacome, Torquay. We have lots of local shops, and buses, easy level access to Babbacombe Downs, beaches and excellent bus services. We love the fact that most of the original villas still remain and the area retains its unique atmosphere of seclusion while still offering amenities such as a Bowling Green, Tennis Courts and a Children’s Playground, not to mention the park itself and the Grade I Listed Church. this seems an ideal location for a holiday.

What makes this apartment unique

Ludwell house is a short level walk to the Downs at Babbacombe and a five minute bus or car drive to the centre of Torquay. The local buses can take you all over South Devon and beyond but our favourite trip runs down to the harbour where you can take a stroll along the promenade stopping at one of the many cafes around the marina. You could take a cruise round the bay or a day trip by boat to Brixham or Dartmouth.

Cary Park is a truly unique area of Torquay, being level, it is also leafy and tranquil yet within a short level walk to loads of amenities. Ludwell House has three apartments, two first floor with lovely views of the gardens and park and one at garden level with direct access to a terrace. We have our own private parking although there is plenty of free off-road parking as well

Superb Balcony Apartment

  • 5 of 5

We stayed 4 nights in this lovely spacious apartment whilst visiting family in Torquay. It has been decorated and furnished to a high standard with good taste throughout the whole property. It is very well maintained and spotlessly clean. The sofa and king size bed with lovely linen was comfortable, it has a fully equipped kitchen, huge flat screen T.V and the added bonus of a sunny balcony to relax on . The area is lovely very quiet and peaceful with nearby local shops and the beautiful Babbacombe Bay. Ian and Karen are excellent hosts very helpful and extremely friendly. I would highly recommend this property it is exceptional value for money you will not be disappointed.

Notes:
Torquay and the surrounding area is perfectly located for a relaxing holiday with the family, a quiet romantic escape or adrenaline-fuelled activity holiday. There is always plenty going on, from Pirate Days in Brixham, to the annual Agatha Christie Festival, and the Torquay Regatta. There are competitive sailing events, live music and comedy, art exhibitions, and nearby houses and gardens to visit including Agatha Christie's former holiday home - Greenway and of course we have a working steam railway and are on the South West Coast Path which offers amazing walks with stunning sea views. The English Riviera is famous for its award winning beaches but it also offers more attractions than any other resort in the UK. The area is also blessed with lots of restaurants, pubs and cafes many with stunning sea views - a great alternative to cooking! Check it all out on the English Riviera Website.
