About the property

House in East Portlemouth, South Devon, England - Surrounded By Nt Land. Right Of Way To Beach Crosses South Coast Path With Great Walks

Completed in 2009, Seacombe was designed by our architect daughter to embrace its location. Its full height glass windows to the south, three balconies and large patio give panoramic views. Downstairs, the large living room, separate hi-tech cinema and well-equipped kitchen appeal to all.

About Glyn and Jane Martin

Glyn is an artist and Jane a teacher but as soon as our daughter, Annie, qualified as an architect we decided to put her skills to good use. She designed Seacombe for us on the site of the old wooden shack we had bought at auction in 1987. She was inspired by the incredible site where she had spent many holidays and little changed from her initial design.

The build involved all the family. Our sons, Will and Joe helped when they could. Annie and her partner, Mark, lived on site. Mark was our carpenter and Annie supervised every detail. Glyn was hands on with all aspects of the building from the footings, ground source heat pump to the stone walling. Jane helped where she could and kept the peace!

We were delighted when the result won a national Best Home competition and two RIBA awards.

Glyn and Jane Martin purchased this house in 1980

Why Glyn and Jane Martin chose South Hams

We had often camped at East Prawle - only an hour from our home in mid-Devon - and knew the magnificent coastline well. By chance we heard of the auction of the old wooden 'bungalow' and the rest is history....

The location is unique. there are no near neighbours and the view of Decklers Cliff and the coastline is uninterrupted.

Our 1.5 acres are in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, surrounded by N.T. land. We have a private right of way to the coastal path and beach.

What makes this house unique

We have put much thought into trying to provide a perfect holiday home. In warm weather, walking and beach visits are often enough but for wet days there is a fully equipped cinema and many games, music and books. The kiitchen is well kitted out with a barbeque inthe garden.

Seacombe is far away from crowds though a ferry trip to Salcombe is a fun way to join the throng. Our visitors' comments have been heart-warming and many guests have returned several times.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We just wanted to say what a wonderful relaxing time we had staying at the beautiful house. We knew it was going to be special but we were completely bowled over when we arrived. It was so welcoming we were speechless for some time after arriving!

We had a very tough 2015 and this was the start we needed to 2016.

We will definitely return again and just wanted to say thank you.
