About the Owner

We have lived in France for almost 2 years having previously renovated a Mill House in Confolens in 2002 and purchasing our barn in 2005. Andy renovates properties and I have my own treatment room within our home for beauty therapy. We live in a tiny hamlet comprising of ten houses and we have endeavoured to learn as much as we can about the french way of life, in order for us to try to fit into the community. As long as you attempt to speak some french, it is very much appreciated and welcomed by all of the locals.

We have two very friendly dogs whom we have rescued since we have been living here.

Excellent luxury accommodation just as advertised, along with all the facilities you would need, lovely hosts who are very helpful,

The tower is set in a lovely peaceful Hamlet, which we would highly recommend; we hope to be returning in the future.”

Wonderful Spot for a Wonderful Holiday

  • 5 of 5

We spent two weeks at La Grange Ancienne at the start of August, it was fantastic. The gite itself is great, it was clean and clearly well looked after. The kitchen was well stocked and big enough to use on a daily basis, with a proper table and a little sofa so you can be sociable while cooking, the lounge was comfortable, with plenty of spac,e a good tv and a selection of DVDs and books, should that be what you want from your holiday.

The bedroom was fantastic, nice and big and comfortable and with good views over the local area (the four windows made great viewing points for the enormous thunderstorm we had one evening).

The pool is lovely for cooling off and relaxing and there is plenty of outdoor furniture if you want to spend the evening eating outside enjoying the sometimes spectacular sunsets.

The owners are extremely welcoming and friendly and very happy to help on the rare occasions that we had any questions, even the dogs made us feel like part of the family.

While there is little within easy walking distance of the gite (shops etc), there is a little village within 10 minutes easy drive where you can get your morning croissants (compulsory for any French holiday in my opinion) and bread, and a couple of hypermarkets a similar distance away just on the outskirts of a town with a reasonable selection of shops and restaurants (I particularly enjoyed the creperie) in St Junien.

A selection of leaflets are available in the gite, including some local walks; one of which goes right past the back gate. These are for the most part well sign posted and very pleasant.

If you want to travel a little, there is a lot to see in the region, both close by and slightly further afield. In the local region are Roman ruins (Cassinomagus), a village destroyed during WWII which has been left as it was left following the raid (Oradour sur Glane), many churches and pretty little villages. There are also loads of things to see within a couple of hours drive (very easy on the fantastic main roads in the region), such as Futuroscope, Roacamadour, le Gouffre de Padirac, the caves at Lascaux and many more.

As you can probably tell, we really enjoyed our holiday, and the gite was the perfect base for it, I could go on for hours about how good it was, but I would just like to say that if you visit you won't regret it.

Owner's Response: Hi Anna & David Thanks very much for your response and we're glad that you both had a very enjoyable holiday here in Le Breuil. Thanks so much for leaving the gite so clean and tidy and if you ever feel like coming back again for another relaxing holiday, you're always welcome. Theresa & Andy (Max & Millie)

Special interest holidays:

There are lots of leaflets/brochures available for places of interest.

We are situated approximately two and a half hours drive from the beach at La Rochelle, but we do have some lovely 'man made' beaches with lakes situated within close proximity. These beaches are very clean and have various pedalos and boats for hire as well as restaurants and children's play areas. The nearest 'beach' to us is at Pressac, which is about 15km away, although there is a much larger beach/lake at Saint Pardoux, which is about 30km away.

We are situated 30mins from Limoges airport and a 5 hour drive from La Havre.

Our nearest village is Montrollet, which is 2km away and has a bar/restaurant overlooking the lake. The market town of St Junien is a 10 minute drive away and features various supermarkets and retail outlets as well as some very interesting shops in the centre of town. Every Saturday morning there is a market and every 3rd Saturday of the month there is a very large market taking up most of the town. The city of Limoges is less than 30km away and is well worth a visit.

Further Details:

We have a large selection of leaflets available, which include places of interest as well as activities for children. Oradour Sur Glane is a village preserved since 1944 when the SS invaded and is only 8km away, but is worth a visit. A visit to Bellevue near Limoges is for all of the family and features train rides, mini safari, toboggan rides, mini-golf, carting etc.

A must is a cycle ride on the Velo-Rail either from Confolens or Bussier-Galant taking you through some wonderful landscapes at your own speed.

The Aquarium du Limousin in Limoges is fascinating for all the family with over 2,500 species of fish! Horse riding is available at Brigueuil, which is 8km away either for the experienced or beginner with randonnees through the forest.

Canoe and kayak trips along the river Vienne can be arranged.

For those with the need for speed why not have a go at outdoor carting near Chalus, comprising of a large circuit in excess of 1200m, which also features a restaurant.

The Parc du Reynou is a safari parc near Limoges within 45 hectares and includes a chateau to discover as well as some fascinating lakes and rivers.

A visit to Limoges would not be complete without a visit to the Maison de la Porcelaine. Why not tour the factory for free of over 200,000 items on display in a 1000m2 factory shop!

For those keen to fish, there are numerous lakes within the area for carp fishing either for the day or for the week to include equipment hire. We can make enquiries for you in advance if you so wish as well as making any bookings for any of the above and more.

There are also various châteaux for you to visit from the Chateau de Peyras at Roumazieres-Loubert or the Chateau de Rochebrune at Etagnac, both of which are not very far. The medieval town of Confolens is worth a visit, especially during the folk festival celebrations which take place during the middle of August and features lots of street entertainment, artists, market traders and various concerts.
