Garden Cottage

This cosy cottage is ideal for a couple who want a quiet retreat or romantic break. The front door opens into a charming beamed room with comfy seating around the wood burning stove, dining table by a window allows you to keep an eye on the local bird population, and a fully equipped kitchen area. Stairs lead to one bedroom, large enough for us to add a bed suitable for a child (please request, additional charge), and a bathroom (bath with hand held shower, basin and toilet). This cottage is tucked behind our other 2 cottages and has a secluded patio that provides a private spot for an alfresco meal or simply to relax. Wi-Fi available. Please note: we can accept only one small dog in this cottage and that the fridge has a freezer compartment.

About the property

Twistgates Farm Cottages, in East Devon, nestle in the Blackdown Hills (AONB). They are surrounded by gently rolling hills, wonderful views and with excellent walking straight from the front doors. Being just minutes from one of the main routes into the West Country they are ideally placed to explore the many attractions that Devon and nearby Dorset and Somerset have to offer, including the magnificent Jurassic Coast. The 3 cottages have been converted from farm buildings into warm and characterful cottages enhanced with beams, exposed stonework and wood burning stoves (for added cosiness only as each cottage has full central heating). A grassy meadow, edged with fruit trees, is available for everyone's enjoyment whether you wish to sit and listen to the birds or be a little more active and kick a ball around! Each cottage has a private patio garden, those of the larger cottages are enclosed but have direct access onto the meadow, and that of the smaller cottage is very secluded and looks onto a quiet garden.

A Nice Cottage Down a Quiet Country Lane

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was pleasant and comfortable, and Suzanne had left a lovely cream tea to welcome us on our arrival. Throughout our stay Suzanne was very keen to know how our stay was going and whether we needed anything. This was done without intruding on us. The cottage has a small courtyard area where we enjoyed watching the birds at the bird feeder. The location was convenient for trips to Dartmoor, Exmoor and the Jurassic Coast. Well worth considering as a base when touring Devon.

Owner's Response: I do appreciate all your comments and thank you for making them. I'm delighted that you were comfortable during your stay and that the birds gave you such pleasure, we love them too and our current visitors are getting great pleasure from seeing the swallows as they swoop in and out of one of the nearby barns. If you return to Devon at any time a warm welcome awaits you here. Best wishes, Suzanne

About Mrs Suzanne Gray

My husband and I arrived here in 2004 having turned our backs on many years of living in London, not to farm, as this is no longer a working farm, but to run holiday cottages. Our home, shared with two golden retrievers and numerous friends and family who visit whenever possible, is the old farm house next to the cottages. Whilst respecting visitors privacy at all times we are on hand if we are needed and love to hear where visitors have explored and to share our favourite places with them.

Mrs Suzanne Gray purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Mrs Suzanne Gray chose Honiton

The tranquillity of the beautiful countryside, the drifts of snowdrops under the hedges and the Devon banks topped with bluebells, the sunsets, the huge variety of birds, regular sightings of deer, foxes and badgers never fail to delight us, and I still get a thrill when I turn off the A303 and head down the quiet lane that leads to Twistgates -at one particular point (and you'll know it when you get there) the valley opens up before you and whatever the season, or the weather, it always takes my breath away.

What makes this cottage unique

Surrounded by the beautiful and peaceful Blackdown Hills, the hustle and bustle of life feels a world away and yet we are only 5 minutes from the A303/A30 - one of the main routes into the West Country. The Jurassic Coast can be reached in under half an hour and Honiton, renown for its antiques emporiums, individual shops and delightful cafes and restaurants, is less than a 15 minute drive. We welcome our guests with a Devon Cream Tea consisting of freshly baked scones, lashings of clotted cream and jam made from our own fruit, and locally produced foods, cider and beer can be bought from the many farm shops, markets, restaurants and pubs in the area.
