Exposed beams & Wood Burning Stoves, Stunning Location In Blackdown Hills AONB - Weathervane Cottage Sleeps 5 (3 Bedrooms)

Updated: 15-Oct-2016
Cottages in Upottery, Near Honiton, Devon, England - Lovely country walks from the front door, Jurassic Coast a short drive away

Twistgates Farm Cottages, in East Devon, nestle in the Blackdown Hills (AONB). They are surrounded by gently rolling hills, wonderful views and with excellent walking straight from the front doors. Being just minutes from one of the main routes into the West Country they are ideally placed to explore the many attractions that Devon and nearby Dorset and Somerset have to offer, including the magnificent Jurassic Coast. The 3 cottages have been converted from farm buildings into warm and characterful cottages enhanced with beams, exposed stonework and wood burning stoves (for added cosiness only as each cottage has full central heating). A grassy meadow, edged with fruit trees, is available for everyone's enjoyment whether you wish to sit and listen to the birds or be a little more active and kick a ball around! Each cottage has a private patio garden, those of the larger cottages are enclosed but have direct access onto the meadow, and that of the smaller cottage is very secluded and looks onto a quiet garden.

About the Owner

My husband and I arrived here in 2004 having turned our backs on many years of living in London, not to farm, as this is no longer a working farm, but to run holiday cottages. Our home, shared with two golden retrievers and numerous friends and family who visit whenever possible, is the old farm house next to the cottages. Whilst respecting visitors privacy at all times we are on hand if we are needed and love to hear where visitors have explored and to share our favourite places with them.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We must have holidayed at Twistgates at least ten times over the years and have never been disappointed."

"Comfortable, welcoming and very cosy. Lovely cream tea on arrival. Family atmosphere, safe for young children. We all loved the personal touches like halloween chocolates and the carved pumpkin on the gate. We all look forward to the next time and many more."

"We have had a very special vacation at the Twistgates holiday cottage. East Devon provided us with such an array of memories to take home to Canada. We went fossil hunting on the Jurassic Coast, visited the historic city of Exeter, walked a little way along the South Coast path, loved the little town of nearby Honiton and did our best to visit every antique shop! In between times we made ourselves so comfy in your delightful and very well equipped holiday cottage. Self catering was easy with so much local food around and we had fun choosing what to eat in the farmers market in Taunton. Thank you!"

A little gem

  • 5 of 5

A lovely cottage, well equipped and maintained. Our party of 3 plus 2 dogs stayed for a week to celebrate two birthdays, and it was a real home from home. Added extras such as a welcome pack of milk, scones, cream and jam plus a vase of daffodils was a delight on arrival. Suzanne and Duncan were very helpful but never intrusive. We were able to use a nearby field to exercise the dogs which was excellent. Local pubs in the area also welcomed dogs so it made the whole holiday easy to plan. I would highly recommend this cottage, it is in a beautiful area of Devon with plenty to explore and do.

From the Owner

The tranquillity of the beautiful countryside, the drifts of snowdrops under the hedges and the Devon banks topped with bluebells, the sunsets, the huge variety of birds, regular sightings of deer, foxes and badgers never fail to delight us, and I still get a thrill when I turn off the A303 and head down the quiet lane that leads to Twistgates -at one particular point (and you'll know it when you get there) the valley opens up before you and whatever the season, or the weather, it always takes my breath away.

From the Owner

Surrounded by the beautiful and peaceful Blackdown Hills, the hustle and bustle of life feels a world away and yet we are only 5 minutes from the A303/A30 - one of the main routes into the West Country. The Jurassic Coast can be reached in under half an hour and Honiton, renown for its antiques emporiums, individual shops and delightful cafes and restaurants, is less than a 15 minute drive. We welcome our guests with a Devon Cream Tea consisting of freshly baked scones, lashings of clotted cream and jam made from our own fruit, and locally produced foods, cider and beer can be bought from the many farm shops, markets, restaurants and pubs in the area.

Our prices include all heating, electricity, bed linen and towels and an initial basket of logs. The only extras are for use of the communal laundry facilities and further supplies of logs. We can accept dogs by prior arrangement and make a charge of £25 per dog per week (restrictions apply). No smoking permitted in any accommodation unit. Outside: A short driveway leads to Twistgates Farm Cottages and as you drive up it you will see through the trees the meadow area on your right. This is a great space for children to run around in and let off steam, perfect for kicking a ball or throwing a Frisbee but there are quiet spots too, amongst the trees, where you can hide away with a good book or watch the varied bird life that abounds here. Garden Cottage has a private and secluded patio tucked behind the other two cottages. Weathervane & Meadow Cottages have their own enclosed patios opening on to the meadow, and are set back from one another to ensure maximum privacy. All the patios are furnished with tables and chairs and are ideal for alfresco meals or maybe just somewhere to sit and take in the gentle surroundings and listen to the birds. The meadow area in front of Weathervane and Meadow Cottages is available for everyone's use.
