A great base for travelling round. We came for a wedding and stayed the week. Places of interest visited include Calke Abbey, Kedleston and Sudbury Hall, National Memorable Arboretum, Lichfield, Foremark Reservoir. Mill Wheel great for Sunday lunch and the Bulls Head good for evening meals. Thank you very much for a lovely time.

Clumsy start, lovely stay

In the 'your trip is coming up soon' email from Home Away, it only mentions Hartshorne. I had forgotten the name of the cottage, and the directions in the app just mention number 59 Ticknall Rd. When you click on the map in the app, it names 29 Ticknall Rd. There is, no cottage with the number 59, so we spent 10 minutes driving around and looking.... before the pub... round the corner on Ticknall Rd etc. Probably getting the name of the cottage up front and centre in the app/arrival address for tired drivers would help.

We also had no direct communication from the owner about how to get in, and it was the local pub owner who affirmed which cottage to go to and that there was a key box. He mentioned that it wasn't the first time he'd had to help people out. (We've been a bit used to another online b&b app lately, where we exchange directions and arrival info in the couple of days before arriving.)

When we phoned on arrival, the first call, to a business, went straight to a 'buy parts' option, so I cut the call and only tried later when we got a bit desperate (and got the owner). This could be fixed by updating the info in the app, checking the map and putting in entry details. We were waiting hopefully for the owner to turn up!

Anyway we were very glad to get in, and the cottage was perfectly fine and comfortable, so thank you.

There are a couple of other things that need updating:

The internet password in Home Away is wrong. I found it by turning over the modem.

The kitchen tap needed dripping, needed a new washer.

There were no tea towels that I could find - no problem -I used a hand towel.

The TV is mainly not bad, but on the first evening it was unwatchable and after that broke up periodically.

No coffee plunger - the teapot did the job.

A couple of supplies e.g.toilet paper, and a bit of coffee and milk would have been pleasant.

So, we had a pleasant stay but better communication would have made a world of difference

A quaint little cottage with olde world charm

Lovely break in quaint cottage in beautiful countryside. Lots of lovely walks on the doorstep and right opposite the Mill Wheel bar and restaurant which served delicious meals and which was dog friendly too.

The cottage was clean and had just about everything you would need for your break.

On the negative side however, the cottage had a tiny garden but no outdoor seating which was a shame and also the TV reception was not brilliant. We did have an issue with the flush on the loo but Simon came right away and sorted the problem out.

The stairs to the bedroom and bathroom were varnished wood which curved round at the bottom and could prove to be difficult for older folk although they looked very nice.

All in all we enjoyed our stay and would certainly recommend the cottage to our friends.

Nugget of gold in Hartshorne

I first stayed in this beautiful little cottage in September and am a frequent returner because of the location and it's such a great place to stay. A one bedroom compact and modern cottage with everything you need to be extremely comfortable including washing machine and tumble dryer. Backing into the national forest affords guests the stunning greenery that surrounds the cottage in the heart of the country bordering on Leicesteshire and Derbyshire. Easy access to Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury's and plenty of really nice pubs within walking distance for lunch or an evening meal. A mobile fish and chip van visits on a Thursday evening too! The owner Simon is extremely helpful, knowledgable and responds quickly to queries including where to buy logs from for the log burning fire. I have spent many happy and settled weekends and mid week stays at this lovely cottage and would highly recommend Simon both for the lovely accommodation and great customer service. I almost would prefer keep the cottage a secret as it really is a nugget of gold!

Wonderful weekend

My husband and I have just spent a wonderful Easter weekend in this amazing little cottage. I was just perfect for the 2 of us, with the log burner and exposed beams, very romantic.

Unfortunately we had to leave our dog at home as she was ill but I know she would've loved it too.

There's lots of nice walks to do, from right outside the cottage so that was great.

We had a lovely meal in The Mill Wheel pub opposite although I would say if you don't like black pepper, tell the waitress when ordering as the chef automatically seasons his steaks with salt and black pepper whilst cooking, it was a little too peppery for me.

We would recommend The Bulls Head for meals as they are much nicer and the landlady is so friendly and welcoming.

The only drawback to both of these places is no dogs are allowed, however there is another pub in between which is dog friendly.

All in all, we had a fabulous time and would recommend it to our friends and family.

Hopefully we'll be booking again soon

Millwheel Cottage

A really enjoyable stay, comfortable with cosy log burning stove. Our weather ranged from frost overnight to 23C! Very local walks within metres of the cottage, and good for birdwatching, as was the surrounding area. Would recommend to others, particularly those who enjoy walking.
