beautiful house in lovely location

We visited with friends in August 2012 with 6 children ranging from 5 to 16 and four adults. The house is fantastic and extremely well stocked with beautiful grounds. The loft room became a den for all the children. The play room attached with table tennis was used regularly. There was more than enough space for both families and every comfort was thought of. A thoroughly wonderful house and holiday.

Beautiful, spacious house in a wonderful location

So often properties that advertise themselves as suitable for sleeping 10+ actually don't have enough living space for everyone. This property was genuinely big enough for 4 adults and 5 children, with space left over. Beautiful bedrooms, spacious dining and seating areas, and some lovely extra touches. Thick white fluffy towels - with plenty of spares - and extra towels for the beach. Games for children and adults. Comfy beds. Bikes for fetching the bread every day. Who could ask for more!

Impressive Property in rural Normandy

  • 5 of 5

A fabulous old property which easily catered for our needs...and more! Set in the beautiful normandy countryside it was a pleasure to return to after visiting various museums and destinations. The description was 100% accurate and didn't disappoint. Would defiantly recommend this property for large families or a group.

Good value

  • 5 of 5

The property was very spacious and exceeded my expectations. You would need to have use of a car to enable you to travel to the beaches(about 30mins travel) and about same distance to Bayeux but this was no problem. The swimming pool was better than I anticipated from the photo and my grandchildren enjoyed it very much. The adults enjoyed it too. Pam was very good and provided an excellent service. I would happily return there and would have no hesitation in recommending it.

Excellent family accommodation with easy access to beach and historic sites.

Well maintained and flexible accommodation. Excellent facilities for families - outdoor spaces and covered areas for activities. Kitchen has everything you could possibly need. Bedrooms are comfortable while maintaining that historical feel for the property.

Another wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

In what has become an annual fixture, our south London cycling club weekend stay at this wonderful place is one of the highlights of our year. Clean, spacious & well-equipped are all the things you expect but Pam goes beyond being helpful every time. Again we enjoyed local food, made & delivered to our door - all arranged by Pam, and not something I imagine every visitor needs as the kitchen has everything you need, but with many hungry souls in need of rest & recovery, she makes it just a total & utter joy to be there.

We learn each year that the area is not only a useful base for a cycling racing weekend but its surrounded by great history - we easily reached the coast for the WW2 beaches & now make sure we visit a war memorial or other historical attraction on the way back to the ferry port. There is a huge amount in the area to see & do and the location perfect to reach either the beaches to the north or those to the west on the Atlantic Coast with its great sunsets and vistas.

With peace & quiet, cleanliness & space & all the charms you'd expect of an old French farmhouse (without having to travel far from Caen Ferry Port) this is a perfect place for a large group of people.

Highly highly recommended!

Owner's Response: I am so glad that your stay at La Rocque this year was again such a success. You are always very appreciative of all the house has to offer, as well as the attractions of this part of Normandy. I am also pleased that the provision of evening meals worked out so well again. I will very much look forward to your 4th visit in September 2016!

Location

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

The nearest beach to the house is Omaha Beach, 26kms to the north. As well as its historical interest due to the crucial part it played in the Normandy landings in WW2, it is also a wonderful beach for families with its extensive golden sands, ideal for beach games and sand castles.

Travel:

The house is situated about an hour's drive from both Cherbourg and Caen (Ouistréham), which are served by regular ferries from Portsmouth.

The Channel Tunnel and the port of Calais are approximately 4 to 4 and a half hours' drive away.

As the house is situated in a rural location, it is highly recommended to have the use of a car.

Distances:

The village of Saint-Jean-de-Savigny is 3kms away

The village of Saint-Clair-sur-Elle is 2kms away

The town of Saint Lô is 10 kms away

Bayeux is 30 minutes drive away

The Mont Saint Michel is 75 minutes drive away

Further Details:

The house is situated about a mile away from the village of Saint-Clair-sur-Elle, where there is a baker’s, a butcher’s, a small supermarket, a chemist’s, a post office and a bank. There is also a doctor in the village and a small market on Tuesdays.

The area is ideal for walking and cycling and the roads are quiet enough for even the youngest children to ride their bikes. There is also horse-riding nearby, as well as canoeing, golf and swimming.

For those wishing to sample local gastronomic delights, it is possible to visit a cheese making factory or see how calvados and cider are made. Younger members of the family invariably appreciate a visit to the caramel factory at Isigny.

Interesting places to visit near at hand are the lovely 10th century abbey at Cerisy-la-Forêt and the château at Balleroy with its balloon museum.

About half an hour’s drive away to the north lies Omaha Beach, where the Americans came ashore during the D-day landings. Close by, at Colleville, the American cemetery, in a beautiful setting overlooking the sea, evokes poignant memories.

The nearest town to the house is Saint Lô, which features beautiful ramparts and has a wonderful market every Saturday. The ‘haras’ or horse-breeding stud is also well worth a visit.

The historic town of Bayeux with its famous tapestry and lovely old cathedral is within easy reach, as is the little port of Arromanches, with its ‘mulberry harbours’. The Mont Saint Michel, in an incomparable setting, with its stunning abbey, is about an hour and a half away by car.
