About Ron & Debi Valentine

We have been coming to France for over 38 years and decided to make it our permanent home in 2006, with both our children (in their 30's) joining us here in 2010. The restoration of our gites has been a labour of love, with all the family helping to renovate them. We have three young English Springer Spaniels and we all love the 'Good Life'!

Ron & Debi Valentine purchased this barn in 2004

Why Ron & Debi Valentine chose Larreule

The area offers us everything with its micro-climate in winter to many days of summer sun and comfortable climate all year round. The mountains for skiing in winter, the beaches in the Pyrenees Atlantic in summer and rural living are perfect for everyone's taste. This friendly area with its beautiful countryside is perfect and Spain is just an hour away where we lunch with friends at weekends and take in the Spanish mountain views, cuisine and lifestyle.

What makes this barn unique

We live in the middle of a rural community with very friendly and helpful French neighbours. Convenient to all local activities and amenities in the pretty market town of Maubourguet which is close by. During the summer months there is a host of local activities where everyone can enjoy the ambiance from wine tasting to the jazz festival in Marciac and many village fetes where locals eat, drink and enjoy life . Maubourguet boasts the largest fete which continues for 4 days and includes a funfair, singing and street dancing. It also has a recognised cultural and arts centre of excellence.

We stayed here recently for two weeks. There were some disappointing and unfriendly aspects like overly restrictive rules e.g. only allowed in pool 9.30_7.30 or Debi would come and tell us off! I can't say I felt relaxed here or like it was "our" property; it felt more like we were tolerated. We have used Owners Direct properties for years and have stayed in other gites with owners on site and we were made to feel very welcome. For example Debi got annoyed that there was a euro in the pool and repeatedly shouted at my ten year old to "dive for it". (this was our introduction to her!) (However Debi and Rons son was very friendly and helpful, when he was there, even arranging a pony ride for my daughter with their friends.)

My main complaint apart from this would be that the eating area was on the car park and far from being the al fresco experience, we were surrounded by wooden fences on both sides. I didn't realise the other gite would be attached to ours and we would be sitting side by side if we went outside. If smokers, this drifts. My husband in particular didn't like finding the odd dog poo on the lawn where our children were playing, and after the 7.30 curfew the entire outside area felt out of bounds as the dogs would then be free to run around barking. Misleading to say there are views of the Pyrenees from the bedroom, all I could see was the car park area and a field. This isn't the most interesting area, that is why it was hard for our children to have a 7.30 curfew (not mentioned anywhere). The pool was v cold and just getting warm by then!

The house inside was basic but clean and was nice to have english TV but lacked enough cutlery for five people and didn't have basic stuff like soap, toilet roll, salt, sugar or any cleaning equipment even a hoover. We bought cleaning equipment but having spent our entire last morning tidying (although we were told there was no need to do much) we were horrified to find that almost all our deposit had been retained because the toilet in my children's bathroom was not flushed properly allegedly. I checked the bathrooms before leaving but the toilets worked only intermittently as they ran constantly. The freezer barely worked neither did the old gas oven, which was terrifying to use. We were also accused of "breaking" the fridge as the front of a compartment fell off the side! We never used BBQ, as discouraged by our hosts saying they were very hard to clean!

Had a lovely stay in Valentine Gite, Juliet. the Gite was clean, comfortable and had everything we needed. Spacious and airy. Loved the quiet, peaceful country setting. Idyllic. Would definitely recommend and hopefully return some day. The owners were friendly and helpful and made us feel welcome. The local nature parks are easy to find and well worth the day trips. Thank-you Valentines for a lovely break.

llareule holiday

  • 5 of 5

The property is stylish with all amenities for self catering. In its secluded and tranquil setting it offers the opportunity to have a relaxing day by the pool or explore the Pyrenees and local villages. Good restaurants and a supermarket are within easy reach. The hosts are friendly and helpful yet managed not to intrude on our privacy at any time. I would recommend this gite to anyone looking for a peaceful and traditionally French holiday.

Good base for visiting the surrounding area

  • 4 of 5

We are a family of 5 with 3 children between 4 and 7 years old. The gite was great for our needs and very clean. We had the use of the owner's pool from 9.30am to 6.30pm and the garden with a swing with unlimited use. I feel we would have benefitted from more private outdoor space (the table and chairs are effectively in the drive) and I'm giving the gite a 4 star because the shower in the main bathroom leaked. Very peaceful location.

We really enjoyed the surrounding countryside and visited Auch and the village that D'Artagnan from the Three Muskateers is said to have come from (there's a very informative museum there). We also took in Lourdes (very interesting, especially the underground Basilica), took the cable car up to Le Pic du Midi and visited the nearby jazz festival in Marciac.

There's a Super U nearby for all amenities 4 minutes away from the property.

If travelling to the gite in an English car I would recommend getting detailed directions before setting off (or checking your sat nav) as our sat nav had the incorrect road loaded in for the address. We have a Land Rover Discovery and the road that was loaded was Cami de la Houmt (not Hount). We arrived very late to the property and the owners were very kind and directed us in as we couldn't find it.

Altogether (shower aside), this was a good value for money property and great for seeing the surrounding countryside and attractions.

If you want to get away from it all and relax - this is the place for you. The gite has everything you could need and is clean and very comfortable. The pool is perfect. A very well stocked supermarket is a five minute drive and good bars and restaurant within a short driving distance. The owners are very welcoming. Great spot for cycling enthusiast too.

Car: necessary

Biarritz is a two hour drive.

Lourdes/Tarbes airport is a 25 minute drive, Pau Pyrenees airport is a 45 minute drive and Toulouse is 2hrs drive. We offer a collection service to all three airports(prices available on request), however, the use of a car is highly recommended.

The property is close to the village of Maubourguet, which is on the Pilgrims route, with it's XI century church, originally part of a Benedictine monastery. Perfect for walking, cycling and enjoying the locally produced wine of Madiran and Saint-Mont in the many bars and restaurants. The village has riversides to offer visitors with plenty of picnic areas and space. The religious town of Lourdes is a 30 min drive, the historic town of Pau is a 45 min drive and Tarbes for shopping is 30 mins.

Further Details:

The nearest supermarket is q 15 mins walk or 4 mins by car.

The pretty market town of Maubourguet is situated near the foothills of the Pyrenees and is steeped in history with its 11th century church of St.Martin, originally part of a Benedictine Monastery. Maubourguet is also on the pilgrimage route of St.Jacques de Compostelle and is popular with hikers. There are many restaurants, cafes and bars with an abundance of boulangerie, bouchers and patisserie serving the best pain de chocolate in the region. The vineyards of St. Mont and Madiran are a short drive away where wine tasting can be sampled. Local wines, cheeses, saucisson and fois gras are just some of the produce offered at the local market on a Tuesday morning. Maubourguet also hosted a stage of The Tour de France in 2014 and The Tour will continue to pass through nearby towns in future years. Amazing views of the Pyrenees Mountains can be seen from Maubourguet and its surrounding villages and hamlets and are easily accessible by car for cycling, skiing, swimming (in mountain lakes) and hiking enthusiasts. The Spanish border is just over an hour away , take a trip there for lunch and experience the rural Spanish lifestyle. Nearby attractions cater for all tastes and include Pony Trekking in the many forests, The mountains, The Beach in Biarritz (2 hours drive), The Chateaux of Madiran and St.Mont, Lupiac (home of D'Artagnan, one of the 3 Musketeers), Lakes at Marciac, Lupiac and Aignan offering water sports and restaurant facilities, Tennis court, Fishing (take a Camel trek by the River Adour), The Jazz Festival in Marciac and the many markets in the surrounding villages most days of the week. White Water Rafting is popular in the mountains as is getting close to the Eagles at Bausen, children may also want to visit the Zoo at Argeles Gazost and of course Lourdes is closeby for those wanting to experience the vision of St.Bernadette.
