About the Owner

I am mother of two wonderful children, and married to an Englishman. I am French. We used to live in the UK, and moved back to France in 2000. In 2003 we bought this lovely home in the foothills of the Pyrenees. In 2011 we moved as a family to Provence, because there is a wonderful school for our children. This has given us the chance to rent out our home as a holiday gite. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do. All the families who have rented from us have said how much they appreciate the quality of the house and the relaxing holiday it creates.

Superb house in a lovely little village

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week at La Maison des galets and loved every minute. We already knew the area but you never know whether the house is going to be what you expect. Well, the house is beautiful and full of character but still very well equipped for family living. The garden is spacious and the pool was much appreciated in the heat and all is very well maintained. Pierre and Maddy were very helpful and friendly, I am French though so there was no communication issue. Escou is a tiny village, very quiet and you will have to take the car to go and buy bread in Ogeu or go to the market. The village is well located though for Oloron, Pau and the Vallee d'Aspe and Vallee d'Ossau. There are tons of activities to do in the area whatever your age/interests. We had a lovely week in Escou and on very hot days did not mind not leaving the house at all as it is so nice.

Beautiful house

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 had a lovely week in August. The house is beautiful, full of character and charm, but robust enough for 3 children to run around in. A large garden and a clean pool, perfect for a cooling dip. Pierre (the gardener) lives over the road and was very helpful; Maddy (the housekeeper) was also very nice (but note that neither speaks any English). A great holiday!

Ideal family retreat

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four had a memorable week at La Maison des Galets.

The property is spacious and full of character, and situated in the very quiet village of Escou.

The large grounds were alive with bird life during our visit, despite the noise of the children playing in the pool.

The village is in an ideal location for accessibility to the local town of Oloron St Marie as well as experiencing a sample of all that the area has to offer within a short car ride. Particular favourites were the local rivers for rafting and kayaking or just cooling off, a challenging local high ropes course and the Caves at Betharam.

Overall I would not hesitate to recommend La Maison des Galets to those seeking a lovely secluded spot amidst beautiful countryside where there is a good variety of outdoor activities.

A wonderful, spacious property in a lovely area

  • 5 of 5

My wife & I stayed for a week at La Maison des Galets, in Escou in the Pyrenees – Atlantiques Department in south western France. It proved to be an extremely spacious and delightful, two-storey, old stone property, which is around 350 years old. It has a well fitted kitchen, a very spacious garden and good-sized swimming pool. There was also a delightful, partially shaded barbeque area immediately outside the kitchen door which was well used by us at dusk. It has good secure parking within the properties walled garden.

The property is located in the heart of the very sleepy village of Escou, just outside the nearby town of Olorons Sainte Marie and is in an excellent location for touring the area to Pau, Tarbes, Lourdes, and of course the Pyrenees. It is in the vicinity of the old Pilgrim`s way of the Chemin de St Jacques de Compostela or El Camino de Santiago de Compostela

The property is located in a very quiet village. About 5 minutes drive away at Ogeu is a well stocked supermarket and bakery, which are both open 7 days a week from about 8.00am.

There a lot of wooded walks in the vicinity the property, and travelling further afield (between 30-60 minutes by car), are some wonderful areas such as Gourette on the way up in the Pyrenees to Col D'Aubesque, Col D'Marie Blanc, and also up to the mini mountain train (Le Petit Train) at Artouste. Great walking and incredible views.

The property was well stocked with local tourist literature, maps and suggestions. Another point also – which is often not the case with rented properties – is that although in a very quiet rural setting, there was excellent wifi connection which never failed.

I would recommend the property as a delightful and relaxing place. Although there was only my wife and myself, I could see it would be a superb place for a family holiday with young children who could run around within the large garden which is secured by high walls and hedges.

Finally, my dealings both before, during and after with the owner, Madame Isabelle Denne, were always pleasant, courteous, and helpful and she was a delight to deal with.

Idyllic French Farmhouse

  • 5 of 5

Arriving at Maison des Galets, after the long drive from Zeebrugge, was a breath of fresh air. The farmhouse is absolutely beautiful; spacious and comfortable, with everything you could possibly need for a truly relaxing, family holiday in this picturesque and decidedly 'un-touristy' part of France. We loved everything about it, from the blue shutters, and free-standing, claw-footed bath in the en-suite (from which you can gaze out at views of the mountains!) to the huge garden, with its fig and apple trees, and excellent pool. There's an abundance of places to visit in the region, including spectacular mountain walks and trips to Biarritz and the Atlantic Coast. The nearby city of Pau was a real surprise - loads of history and 'Belle Epoque' elegance. That said, some our best times (family of 5, with older teenagers) were spent relaxing by the pool.

Isabelle (the owner) had very helpfully left loads of information and advice of places to go, both locally and further afield, and Julie, the house manager, was just lovely.

In short, we had a fantastic holiday at La Maison des Galets. We would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking to holiday in the Atlantique-Pyrenees and we would, definitely, like to return there, some day!

The only point I would add is that a car is advisable. Escou is a pretty, little village, but the nearest supermarket is 3kms away and walking there would entail crossing the main road to Pau. The nearest town, Oloron St Marie (with fascinating Romanesque church!) is about 20 mins away, by car and has a busy market and large hypermarket, for all those holiday essentials.

Fabulous family holiday!

  • 5 of 5

Following a long drive we were delighted to discover la Maison des Galets was even more impressive then the photos.

The house catered for all our needs, as other guests have already said -it has a fully equipped kitchen and modern bathrooms but has retained bags of character. We spent some point every day by the pool and our kids loved the freedom of both the beautiful garden and pool.

The surrounding area is also stunning, much more lush than we expected. We enjoyed exploring the three local valleys and many of the surrounding villages and towns. We were lucky enough to experience a stage of the Tour de France and my husband enjoyed the challenges of the local moutains on his road bike.

We would highly recommend this beautiful home to any family looking for a holiday that caters for everyone.

Thank you :)

"Best chocolate EVER, "

From the Owner

We bought this house simply because the area is beautiful. Standing on the "Boulevard to Pyrenees" in Pau, just 20 minutes away, we looked at the mountains and said - "wow, we must live here, its fantastic". (We found out later that Napoleon had said that this same view was one of the most stunning views in France.) Our house is in the friendly village of Escou, 20 minutes from the elegance of the city of Pau. The village is at the entrance to the Vallee d'Ossau. Full of the wonders of the natural beauty of the Pyrenees; One of our favourite activities is to hire a donkey, pack up a tent and some provisions - and set off for a walk for 2 or 3 days in the wilderness of the mountains. It is truly amazing.

Coast/Beach:

The glorious Atlantic ocean is one hours drive away through the rolling countryside. Glorious beaches from Biarritz to Hossegor, the coast is world famous. With beautiful villages just inland from the coast, this Basque region of France is a must visit for a day or overnight stay.

Further Details:

There is a wonderful local cheese shop at the entrance to the village selling world class "Brebis" cheese from local producers. It is a must try, and the owner is very friendly.

The village of Ogeu, 4 KM away has one of the best bakeries in the region.

Jurancon wine is the local speciality and world famous. We prefer the dry, and the fruity is a wonderful aperitif. The village of Jurancon is just 15 km away on the road to Pau.

Oloron has all the main supermarkets, banks, chemists etc. There are some good quality restaurants.

Pau is a little more elegant and up-market with wide boulevards and shopping areas.

river kayaking is available through the Oloron tourist office and the trip down the river well worth doing.

Our favourite activity is to hire a donkey or two, load them up with our tents and food and wander off into the wilderness for 2 or 3 days hiking. Ask for "les Petits pas" at the tourist office. They will provide you with walks - either guided or not as you wish.
