Home away from Home

This elegant, spacious and spotlessly clean village house is a credit to the owners. They have thought of absolutely everything to ensure a comfortable and relaxing stay for their guests. From the ice bricks in the freezer to go into the cool box, knife sharpener in the kitchen, excellent quality bedding and linen and much much more, it is all there. We have spent 3 weeks here, and felt very much at home. The village is delightful , situated on a picturesque river, close to larger towns and attractions. Whether you are looking for a short or longer stay, we could not recommend this property highly enough.

Great Location Base

  • 3 of 5

A lovely welcome from Wendy with the thoughtful provision of welcome basket.

The house is spacious though as it was so hot we didn't spend much time indoors and was very thankful of the air conditioning in the bedroom. A lovely courtyard to relax and enjoy while sipping the odd glass with amazing night skyline . Very grateful to make use of the washing machine and the excellent weather with no dirty washing to take home.

A friendly village with excellent boulangerie for daily bread and of course, cakes!

Great base and we had excellent days out exploring the nearby picturesque towns and villages with a very enjoyable time wine tasting with informative tour and display at nearby Duras

Perfect house, ideal location

  • 5 of 5

We've just returned from a three week stay at Maison Tarrano. What a surprise this house was – much larger and more elegant than we expected, with every need anticipated and catered for. The welcome basket was much appreciated. Wendy has ensured that guests can feel pampered with pristine linen, soft white towels and good quality kitchen equipment. Even the hairdryer was impressive!

The tasteful blend of traditional and modern furnishings was very appealing but even more delightful was the range of lovely objects and interesting artwork on display. We felt visually uplifted in every room. Simply being in this house was so pleasurable that it was tempting to idle there all day.

The courtyard garden gave us the privacy and peace we needed while having the village amenities just through the gate. In the evening, as the fragrance of the honeysuckle intensified, it was good to sit with a glass of wine and forget about the world beyond.

Eymet (10 minutes away) was our favourite coffee venue (Le Treize bistro serves excellent coffee and is run by a charming young couple). The car park beside the river gives you a chance to see the resident heron as well as a very irritable swan. An evening meal at Ma Maison in Sauvetat (only 5 minutes away) was excellent. Further afield, at Euskadi , in Bergerac our lunch in a shady square was good value. In Agen, before visiting the impressive Musee des Beaux-Arts, we enjoyed cider and galettes at L'Aubade, also set in a quiet square.

Allemans, of course, is a perfect village to be in: quiet yet providing essentials; picturesque but not touristy. The proximity to a number of less well known bastide towns is a bonus.

After any trip, returning to Maison Tarrano was always a joy and we felt very sad at leaving. Thank you Wendy and George for providing such a memorable townhouse experience.

Perfect house for relaxing break.

  • 5 of 5

The house was clean, well-maintained and equipped with all the small things that make a difference such as washing tablets, cooking foil etc. It is very spacious although, as the weather was so good, we mainly used the outside space for relaxing and eating. The village is quiet and picturesque and provided me with a fix of live football on the Sunday afternoon (think County rather than Premier League). Wendy made the booking process straightforward and was the perfect host. If you want to have a taste of "living the dream" in a typically French setting then this is the place for you.

a real gem

  • 5 of 5

First, let me say that George and Wendy are the perfect hosts and were accommodating in every way; even when, for a brief time, their internet connection played up and my suspicious nature took over (apologies both!).

The photos don't do it justice, Maison Terrano is bigger, than it appears and is perfectly situated for exploring this region of France. I can't emphasise enough how much I value quiet, but Maison Terrano fits this bill perfectly, it is blissfully peaceful as is Allemans. It's clean, airy and there's plenty of hot water for showers for the four of us. All amenities ie washing machine, cooker (decent set of knives) dishwasher and anything else you can think of, are at the Gite so you won't need to pack as much as we did.

You could, if you so chose, just stay in the village, there's a lovely bakers, butchers and a couple of small restaurants. Or, like us, you can get out and about. If you don't want tourist traps Eymet is best avoided although there are some good restaurants there. From Allemans you're within striking distance of a good variety of places to visit. There's also canoeing on the Dropt just down the road, there's plenty of wildlife to see including Coypu and kingfishers. I could keep going but will finish by saying, if I could keep this place to myself, I would, because I want to go back and don't want it booked up before I do. For half the price of a caravan in Cornwall you can have a week here during peak season

The village has a hotel with a restaurant, a bar, a baker, a newsagent, and a butcher with general store for your everyday needs...all within a 5 minute stroll, as is the river where you can fish, hire a canoe or walk along its banks. The village church (Saint Eutrope) dates from the 10th century and its walls are covered with many 15th century frescoes.

Beautiful lakes, historical chateaux, lively markets and miles upon miles of peaceful countryside are here for you to explore in this lovely region or France.

Allemans is close to many vineyards, a few of which are large enterprises but the majority are small and family run; most are pleased to welcome visitors for wine tasting. In addition, for the wine enthusiast, Monbazillac is produced just south of Bergerac and St Emilion is just 40 minutes away.

There is at least one market within easy reach every day of the week, eg Saturday at St Foy and Marmande, Sunday at Issigeac, Monday at Miramont and so on.

In addition to golfing or canoeing, if you enjoy cycling or walking, you will certainly love taking to the lanes and fields right on your doorstep, stopping en route at other villages along the way or head towards pretty towns nearby like Duras with its famous chateau or the bastide town of Eymet.

Whether you walk, ride your bikes, paddle a canoe or take your car, you will find plenty to interest you here or maybe you will just want to relax in the courtyard and do nothing except watch a game of petanque being played by the locals under the shade of the plane trees.
