Five minutes drive from the village in one direction takes you to Dun Sur Meuse, where there is a beach, swimming lake, water slide, snack bar and pedalos for hire. In the opposite direction, five minutes drive takes you to the small village of Vilosnes - where locals spend relaxing afternoons by the river, sunbathing, swimming or paddling round in inflatables. The village is 30 minutes drive from the Belgium border, 1.5 hours from Luxembourg and 2 hours from Germany. The historical town of Verdun is 30 minutes drive; along the banks of the river running through the centre are lots of small cafes and bars. Plenty of good shopping areas too in Verdun!! Whether you decide to go sightseeing, visit historical sites or just a relax in the sun, you will love our little village and enjoy your holiday.

About Sandra Lee

Hi, we are Paddy & Sandra Lee from Blackburn, Lancashire, England, UK. In 2004 we brought our canal boat over to Europe and sailed for two years through Belgium and France until in 2006 we decided to 'winter' in Stenay, NE France. Sailing through the Ardenne was very picturesque so, just out of interest, we looked at properties in the local estate agents. A lady from the tourist office introduced herself to us while we were moored at the 'Port de Plaisance' and we told her we may be interested in buying a property in the area - she said she knew of one in a small village nearby which had just come on the market. The house needed a lot of work but we were both enthusiastic about the challenge and bought the house. Needless to say, our boat is now sold and we have settled here.

Sandra Lee purchased this house in 2006

Why Sandra Lee chose Meuse

We bought the house in Liny Devant Dun because it was a good price, the villagers here are really friendly and helpful and the area is beautiful. In the height of summer it gets can get really hot here, early and late summer a nice warm temperature (which I prefer!). The situation of this village is convenient for us getting back to Blackburn, in the UK, too - either for family visits or if we need to get back in an emergency. We are four hours from both the Port of Calais and Charles de Gaulle Airport (3.5 hours on a good day!). We usually travel by car - the ferry prices are reasonable and include a car and five people - sharing the cost obviously makes it even cheaper. There is only one toll road which costs about 20 euro's. Liny is quiet and peaceful but not far from towns and shops.

What makes this house unique

Our house is the oldest inhabited house in the village - over 300 years old !! It was built as a staging post for horse drawn deliveries being made to Verdun. When we bought the house, the previous owner had already started renovation work, but there was still plenty to do - apart from summer, when it has been too hot to work and we have had many family members visiting - in fact, we have seen more of them since we moved to France than we did in England!!

A little piece of Heaven

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely give. It has everything you could ever want for an excellent holiday. Situated in a lovely quiet and quaint village, it really is a little piece of heaven on earth. Sandra and Paddy are delightful hosts, and nothing was too much trouble. The garden is a glorious place to sit and relax with a glass of wine, or even play a game of boules in the evening. The beds in the gite were so comfortable and everything was really clean and fresh inside. I particularly loved the church across the road for its rustic charm, even the often doleful sounding bells were welcome, though not everyone in our party agrees with me here. The German War Cemetery is well worth a visit. Make sure you check out the spectacular views on the way. Residents of the village are all very friendly, and one lady stopped her car and wished us a good journey as we were preparing to leave on the morning we left. Sorry Paddy and Sandra that we had to leave so early in the morning that we missed thanking you in person for your wonderful hospitality and warm welcome in your home, but we had a long journey to our next home from home in Normandy! Thanks for everything, we all had a fantastic time.

So much to see

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to Sandra and Paddy's home. We first visited in June last year and enjoyed it so much we came back. There is so much to do in the area, a week doesn't seem to be long enough. We still haven't done everything we would like to do so will probably return in 2016. Excellent location: Luxemburg 1.5 hours away, Belgium 1.5 hours away and Germany 2 hours away. Lots to do locally especially if you like to visit WW1 memorials and cemeteries.

The canal and lock are a few minutes walk from the gite and you can sit and watch the boats going through the lock or take a stroll along the towpath. This gite is suitable for everyone. There are lots of dvds, PS games, a Wii, Wifi, a huge range of books, bikes, ample garden seating and garden games such as boules. Thanks again Sandra and Paddy for letting us share your home.

A relaxing holiday ...

  • 5 of 5

We were very impressed with our borrowed home for the week. The owner lives next door, but never interfered with our stay, but was on hand for advice and suggestions. A lovely friendly lady! The house was beautiful. Very well maintained, comfortable and roomy. The garden was a pleasure to sit in of an evening with a glass of wine amongst the fruit trees and flowers. Garden games were provided along with BBQ and bikes, there was also a large selection of garden furniture. The village was pretty, friendly, quiet and we felt safe to let our children wander around and ride on the bikes provided by the owners of the house. A short walk took us to the canal and river where the friendly lock keeper looked after us and let us help with boats coming through the lock.

No shops in the village, but a supermarket is within a short driving distance. Interesting area and lots of things to do locally and further afield, but a car is needed.

All in all, a first class stay and we would definitely go back there again.

Owner's Response: Hi Paul, Donna & boys. Really glad you enjoyed your holiday over here, you would be welcome back any time. Particularly glad the boys enjoyed themselves - we try to provide as much as we can for the youngsters. Will nip up and tell the lock keeper he was mentioned in your review! Would love to see you all again if you decide to holiday here again in the future. Sandra.

Cosy, comfy and homely

  • 5 of 5

Having stayed in many gites and cottages in UK, Ireland and France, I can honestly say this is one of the best. It was spotlessly clean and superbly equipped. Unfortunately we didnt get to meet Sandra as she was in the UK but Paddy (and Beau) looked after us admirably. Everything was lovely. Very much enjoyed visiting the many historical sites in the surrounding area - far too many to mention them all, but all within easy reach. Enjoyed visiting 4 countries in one day - France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany. The countryside much different from our part of France - more gentle and rolling landscape. The village is very much a working village with barns attached to cottages - plenty of farmyard ambiance, but dont let that put you off! The canal is just a couple of hundred yards walk at the end of the village and was lucky enough to see a boat go through the lock. Very quiet (apart from the church bells) but you soon get used to them. Would recommend strongly and would visit again in the future.

Owner's Response: Hi Sarah & Nick. Really glad you enjoyed your holiday. What lovely weather we had in September this year. Hope your little dog enjoyed the garden and Beau wan't too exuberant when they met. Would love to meet you if you come our way again, sorry I was not there this time. Thank you for stripping beds and putting linen in wash room (you didn't have to !!) and for leaving the house clean and tidy for us. Best wishes. Sandra.

Fantastic

  • 5 of 5

Paddy & Sandra were they to meet n greet us, they showed us round the house n garden, & explained everything us. We have stayed in many houses in France over several years & I can honestly say this was the cleanest one we have been in. There was a welcome pack (which was handy until we could get to the shop) As we are bikers/Trikers we had been on the road most of the day Paddy & Sandra kindly took us to Stenay to do our grocery shopping & carried it back for us in their car. The house has Wifi & Sky TV which was a bonus, & the Trikes were safely locked up in the garage which pleased the hubbies.

The villagers are so friendly even the children everyone of them always greeted us with bonjour, it's like going back in time.

We did a lot of sightseeing, the roads are perfect for biking/triking, the area has got so much to offer, we visited most of the WW1 cemetery's, including French:Verdun, Douamont-Ossuary. USA: Romagne, such sad places, especially has it was the 100 yr. anniversary.

We did the 4 countries in a day, with ease, France, Belguim, Luxembourg & Trier in Germany, beautiful town well worth the visit. Bouillon in Belguim is a beautiful town(shame it rained when we visited) it has a large Tobac there which is cheaper than buying in France.

But must say the village of Dun-Ser-Meuse which is right on the door step is so-so pretty, go up to the church beautiful views.

I would recommend the house, & this area to my family n friends, & Paddy & Sandra were the perfect host, thank you x

Owner's Response: Loved having you here. You know that as former bikers ourselves, we have an affinity. Sorry the weather wasn't brilliant - it's been a funny year - usually red hot through July and August but we've had more rain than normal this year. Thank you for leaving the house so clean for us - I hardly had anything to do for the changeover !! You would all be most welcome again should you visit this way. Sandra & Paddy

Home from home

  • 5 of 5

Sandra and Paddy were waiting for us when we arrived and showed us around the house and garden. We were not disappointed! The house had everything we needed for our stay: plenty of storage, a functional kitchen, a very comfortable lounge and a utility room which was a bonus. We were given a list of suggested areas to visit which was very helpful. We particularly enjoyed the visit to the champagne caves in Epernay and our visit to Belgium. Verdun was a beautiful town, lots to see and a lovely atmosphere in the evening. The village of Liny Devant Dun itself is lovely and quaint. Sandra and Paddy made us very welcome and were on hand to answer any questions we had. As a rule we never go back to an area but in this case we just might!

Owner's Response: Hi folks. Thank you for the review, really glad you enjoyed your stay. Just to let you know that Paddy has been scouring through his bird books, and he's sure that the bird who has made the nest in the mirabel tree is a mistlethrush - even though it does sound more like a winter visitor !! Bye for now. You would be more that welcome to come again.
