About the property

2 bedroom character cottage with a secluded riverside garden, ideal retreat for couples and families, dogs welcome

Cobblestones Cottage has been tastefully decorated to combine modern comforts with the inescapable character and charm of this 18th century cottage. The cottage is located up a quiet country lane on the edge of Combe Martin village, but is still within walking distance of all amenities. With its own separate entrance, this annexed part of the owners' family home is ideally suited to families or couples who want somewhere welcoming and peaceful to enjoy quality time together.

The property sits in approximately ¾ acre, with the River Umber meandering through and forming natural boundaries to 3 distinct garden areas. You will have access to a large, secluded and fenced garden, with a patio area, bbq and chiminea for relaxing evenings 'al fresco'.

The cottage is accessed via a large covered porch, and downstairs comprises an open plan but cosy kitchen, dining and living area. There is also a large store room, plus secure outbuildings to allow safe storage for any activity related equipment you may wish to bring, such as surf boards and bikes. Stairs lead from the living room to a large double bedroom, and via this to a second bedroom (with a bed and cot) and a large family bathroom with roll top bath and separate shower.

The cottage has full central heating, and basic larder, cleaning products and toiletries are provided. There is also a games cupboard with a selection of boxed games and children's toys, plus a large selection of books suitable for all ages. All bed linen and towels are provided including cot sheets, but please bring your own cot quilt/blankets.

If you are bringing children they may enjoy feeding our chickens, and all are welcome to enjoy a share of their delicious, fresh, free range eggs when available free of charge. We can also provide baby gear including a cot, safety gates, high chair, baby bath, changing mat and play gym. Should your family include dogs, these are also welcome by arrangement. A gate leads from the far end of the garden on to a footpath, offering direct access to ideal dog walking territory.

Cobblestones Cottage offers you the perfect place to unwind and relax after a day exploring the wonders of North Devon. Please note that our changeover day is usually a Friday. However this may be flexible as we also offer short breaks, please don't hesitate to ask when you make your enquiry.

Why Carol Crawford chose North Devon

The owners fell in love with this property because of it's idyllic location and character. The cottage is located on the outskirts of the village up a quiet country lane, and yet still offers easy access to village amenities and way of life. They consider local beaches and walking opportunities second to none; the area offers scenic beauty and variety that you would find hard to beat.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We have had a brilliant few days here at Cobblestones. The cottage is perfect - one of the best we have stayed in and we have stayed in a few over the years! Little extras like the welcome basket and doggy things make all the difference. We have enjoyed re-visiting the wonderful beaches in the area and even the occasional downpour didn't dampen our spirits! All in all a relaxing, much needed break."

Nicola & Paul Green, November 2014

"Thanks Carol & Martin for creating such a 'little gem'. All the comforts and extra special touches you provide all helped to make our holiday really enjoyable. We loved coming back to a cosy 'home from home' after an enjoyable day exploring Devon. Over the years we have stayed in many, many cottages and holiday properties and this has definitely been one of our favourites."

Manuela & Pete Lammas, October 2014

"We have had an extremely relaxing break, made more so by this lovely cottage with everything we needed and more! Our son has especially enjoyed all the toys & books & has learned to say 'chickies' (chickens). It's been fantastic and we've loved all the little touches, including the OS map & rock pool guide! Thank you."

Beautiful Cottage, Fantastic Garden & Great Hosts

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful 3 night stay at Cobblestones Cottage in June, made even better by glorious weather!

The accommodation is great; cosy, clean and very well equipped. The welcome pack upon arrival was also a lovely touch.

The garden is fantastic, especially the chickens and the stream running through the middle of it. There is a lot of space, with a lovely sun-trap area in the late afternoon. We regularly used the patio for BBQ/alfresco eating and enjoyed a wine or two by the chiminea most evenings.

If you sit out at night, you can often hear animals in the wildlife park further down the road; particularly the wolves and lions.

The Galleon at Combe Martin did a great Full English Breakfast on the roof top terrace.

We visited Rosemoor gardens, Clovelly and Lynton/Lynmouth. We also took a picnic to the small beach at Heddon Mouth, which is well worthwhile.

The Sawmill pub is a short drive and has a good menu and a number of decent craft beers and ciders.

We visited Ilfracombe and enjoyed excellent fish and chips from Lynbay chip shop. The Damien Hirst sculpture is worth a look at the harbour entrance and we also grabbed a drink at "The Quay" which is decorated with a number of pieces by the artist.

We had a wonderful stay and we would definitely like to return.

Thank you Carol and Martin.

Kathryn & Jon

Lovely cottage set in a beautiful garden with very friendly hosts

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was comfortable and was very well equipped. We were made very welcome by the owners and were presented with a lovely welcome basket with home made bread, fresh laid eggs and delicious fudge. There were useful maps and guides supplied to help us explore the area. We were able to get out and see a lot of the area and had the bonus of lovely sunshine. I would recommend it as a good base for the sea and moor.

Cosy, comfortable and well equipped cottage in a peaceful setting

  • 5 of 5

As a couple with a dog this cottage was perfect and had everything we could possibly need for a week in Combe Martin. On arrival we were greeted with a smile and fresh bread, eggs, milk, wine and fudge. The owners have thought of everything and it saved us having to shop for small essentials such as cooking oil, washing powder, foil etc so thanks! It was ideal for us and we visited many places such as Ilfracombe, Woolacombe, Lynton and Lynmouth. We had drinks at the Pack o' Cards pub and also Ye Olde Globe in Berrynarbour and used the local chip shops aswell. Had a lovely meal at Sawmills restaurant just out of Combe Martin. Locals and other holidaymakers were friendly and we would recommend the cottage to others.

Beautiful Cottage and Garden, Beautiful Surroundings and Wonderful Hosts

  • 5 of 5

The cottage and garden is spacious and beautiful. Carol and Martin have thought of absolutely everything to make your stay and happy and stress free one.

We (2 Adults, a 7 year old boy and a 1 year old puppy) stayed at Cobblestone for a week in August.

The cottage is beautifully decorated and comfortable with everything you need. The Garden is huge, secure and beautifully kept with a pretty (safely fenced off) stream running alongside it, bench, table and chairs, BBQ, tree swing etc. My son's favorite was to visit the chickens, collect eggs and feed them.

Whilst there, we had a flat tyre, Carol and Martin were so helpful. Martin helped my husband get the tyre off and Carol dropped it at our chosen garage on her way to work and collected it, with Martin helping to put it back on the car. This meant we could go off for the day and not have to worry about it, it didn't affect our holiday at all thanks to Carol and Martin.

We enjoyed the Combe Martin carnival, the beach for the dog was great and so too was the Exmoor Zoo and Dinosaur & Wildlife Park!

Thanks Carol & Martin

Spotlessly clean with beautiful garden

  • 5 of 5

This thoughtfully appointed and tastefully decorated cottage with its beautiful garden is suitable for couples, a small family with one child and those who wish to bring their dog. It was spotlessly clean and we found everything we needed for a week's stay. The upstairs is light and spacious, the downstairs living space is cosy, and the pantry and porch ensure that there is plenty of storage space for outdoor activity equipment (rucksacks and walking boots in our case) and for drying wet clothes and footwear. We were greeted in a most friendly and welcoming fashion by our host and we really appreciated the welcome pack of eggs, home-made bread and fudge, and a bottle of wine. Facilities in the village of Combe Martin are a short walk away and the cottage has the advantage of being just round the corner from the local supermarket. Plenty of up-to-date local information was provided and we found this very useful. Combe Martin is an ideal base from which to explore the delights of North Devon and Exmoor.
