18th Century Cottage Peacefully Nestled In An Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty

Overview

Property

Updated: 02-Dec-2016
2 bedroom character cottage with a secluded riverside garden, ideal retreat for couples and families, dogs welcome

Cobblestones Cottage has been tastefully decorated to combine modern comforts with the inescapable character and charm of this 18th century cottage. The cottage is located up a quiet country lane on the edge of Combe Martin village, but is still within walking distance of all amenities. With its own separate entrance, this annexed part of the owners' family home is ideally suited to families or couples who want somewhere welcoming and peaceful to enjoy quality time together.

The property sits in approximately ¾ acre, with the River Umber meandering through and forming natural boundaries to 3 distinct garden areas. You will have access to a large, secluded and fenced garden, with a patio area, bbq and chiminea for relaxing evenings 'al fresco'.

The cottage is accessed via a large covered porch, and downstairs comprises an open plan but cosy kitchen, dining and living area. There is also a large store room, plus secure outbuildings to allow safe storage for any activity related equipment you may wish to bring, such as surf boards and bikes. Stairs lead from the living room to a large double bedroom, and via this to a second bedroom (with a bed and cot) and a large family bathroom with roll top bath and separate shower.

The cottage has full central heating, and basic larder, cleaning products and toiletries are provided. There is also a games cupboard with a selection of boxed games and children's toys, plus a large selection of books suitable for all ages. All bed linen and towels are provided including cot sheets, but please bring your own cot quilt/blankets.

If you are bringing children they may enjoy feeding our chickens, and all are welcome to enjoy a share of their delicious, fresh, free range eggs when available free of charge. We can also provide baby gear including a cot, safety gates, high chair, baby bath, changing mat and play gym. Should your family include dogs, these are also welcome by arrangement. A gate leads from the far end of the garden on to a footpath, offering direct access to ideal dog walking territory.

Cobblestones Cottage offers you the perfect place to unwind and relax after a day exploring the wonders of North Devon. Please note that our changeover day is usually a Friday. However this may be flexible as we also offer short breaks, please don't hesitate to ask when you make your enquiry.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We have had a brilliant few days here at Cobblestones. The cottage is perfect - one of the best we have stayed in and we have stayed in a few over the years! Little extras like the welcome basket and doggy things make all the difference. We have enjoyed re-visiting the wonderful beaches in the area and even the occasional downpour didn't dampen our spirits! All in all a relaxing, much needed break."

Nicola & Paul Green, November 2014

"Thanks Carol & Martin for creating such a 'little gem'. All the comforts and extra special touches you provide all helped to make our holiday really enjoyable. We loved coming back to a cosy 'home from home' after an enjoyable day exploring Devon. Over the years we have stayed in many, many cottages and holiday properties and this has definitely been one of our favourites."

Manuela & Pete Lammas, October 2014

"We have had an extremely relaxing break, made more so by this lovely cottage with everything we needed and more! Our son has especially enjoyed all the toys & books & has learned to say 'chickies' (chickens). It's been fantastic and we've loved all the little touches, including the OS map & rock pool guide! Thank you."

Beautiful Cottage and Garden, Beautiful Surroundings and Wonderful Hosts

  • 5 of 5

The cottage and garden is spacious and beautiful. Carol and Martin have thought of absolutely everything to make your stay and happy and stress free one.

We (2 Adults, a 7 year old boy and a 1 year old puppy) stayed at Cobblestone for a week in August.

The cottage is beautifully decorated and comfortable with everything you need. The Garden is huge, secure and beautifully kept with a pretty (safely fenced off) stream running alongside it, bench, table and chairs, BBQ, tree swing etc. My son's favorite was to visit the chickens, collect eggs and feed them.

Whilst there, we had a flat tyre, Carol and Martin were so helpful. Martin helped my husband get the tyre off and Carol dropped it at our chosen garage on her way to work and collected it, with Martin helping to put it back on the car. This meant we could go off for the day and not have to worry about it, it didn't affect our holiday at all thanks to Carol and Martin.

We enjoyed the Combe Martin carnival, the beach for the dog was great and so too was the Exmoor Zoo and Dinosaur & Wildlife Park!

Thanks Carol & Martin

Spotlessly clean with beautiful garden

  • 5 of 5

This thoughtfully appointed and tastefully decorated cottage with its beautiful garden is suitable for couples, a small family with one child and those who wish to bring their dog. It was spotlessly clean and we found everything we needed for a week's stay. The upstairs is light and spacious, the downstairs living space is cosy, and the pantry and porch ensure that there is plenty of storage space for outdoor activity equipment (rucksacks and walking boots in our case) and for drying wet clothes and footwear. We were greeted in a most friendly and welcoming fashion by our host and we really appreciated the welcome pack of eggs, home-made bread and fudge, and a bottle of wine. Facilities in the village of Combe Martin are a short walk away and the cottage has the advantage of being just round the corner from the local supermarket. Plenty of up-to-date local information was provided and we found this very useful. Combe Martin is an ideal base from which to explore the delights of North Devon and Exmoor.

Really home from home in lovely surroundings

  • 5 of 5

Really delighted with our stay at Cobblestones.

So well equipped ( kitchen especially) and stylish throughout in a quiet location.

Furnishings to a very high standard. The bedrooms spacious, and bathroom spacious, stylish and complete with bath and shower.

Parking is a short distance down a quiet lane, but very little used and can be used to load/ unload any suitcases.

Owners house is attached and are available but discreet, and a very private attractive sunny garden is available for sole use. Very welcoming, including a useful welcome pack including eggs and freshly baked bread.

Will hopefully revisit some time in the future, thankyou.

Wonderful family friendly accommodation

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful holiday at Cobblestones. Carol and Martin were very supportive and helpful throughout the stay. Our three year and 9 month old baby were well catered for with plenty of toys and entertainment. The garden is a lovely haven and feeding the chickens was a daily highlight for our children. It is a lovely relaxed place to base yourselves for visiting North Devon and is an ideal choice for young families.

Immaculate & charming

  • 5 of 5

Delighted to review our stay at Cobblestones cottage; a three night stay with our retreiver in May 2016. We were extremely impressed with the accomodation & gardens. Completely perfect for our requirements and no negative issues to comment upon. If you are after a beautiful traditional cottage that is immaculately clean, a large garden area for play or just to enjoy with a patio area & swing chair, immediate walks from the property and delightful owners who have thought of everything a guest may need and more, book now! Best place we have ever stayed.

Very relaxing and comfortable.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is very comfortable and was spotlessly clean. It was warm and cosy with plenty of room to relax. We ate out so we did not make use of the cooking facilities, except for breakfast where the homemade bread and eggs were well appreciated. Being rather old, we used our bus pass on several occasions.....the 301 to Ilfracombe and Barnstaple steps at the end of the lane and was very convenient. Best local restaurant was The Pack o Cards, which doesn't get good reviews but was the only one that did something other than standard pub grub. Fox and Goose at Parracombe was good, Black Venus less so.....don't know why it gets such good reviews.

Took grandchildren to Dinosaur Park....a bit scruffy but the sea lion display was worth the visit. Ilfracombe has seen better days. Much better to get to Lynmouth, Barnstaple or Clovelly.....but be warned about the steep cobblestone access.

All in all, a very pleasant break.

Location

From the Owner

The owners fell in love with this property because of it's idyllic location and character. The cottage is located on the outskirts of the village up a quiet country lane, and yet still offers easy access to village amenities and way of life. They consider local beaches and walking opportunities second to none; the area offers scenic beauty and variety that you would find hard to beat.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Train : Barnstaple at 12 Miles Nearest Motorway : M5 at 45 Miles Nearest Beach : Combe Martin at 1.5 Miles

Combe Martin beach is 1.5 miles away; just a couple of minutes by car, an easy 1/2hr stroll along the high street or a 45min cross country walk with beautiful views. It is a rock poolers paradise, and kayaks are available for hire near the beach front. Other beaches within a 30min drive include the glorious golden sands of Woolacombe, Putsborough and Croyde. The South West Coast Path runs through the heart of Combe Martin, offering miles of stunning coastal walks in either direction.

We are a 5 minute walk from the nearest grocery store and 10 minutes walk from the nearest pub. All village amenities are walk able within 30mins. Nearest towns are Ilfracombe (6 miles) and Barnstaple (12 miles, main market town of North Devon).

Local attractions include the Combe Martin Wildlife & Dinosaur Park (2 mins drive) and Watermouth Castle & Theme Park (10 mins drive). There are beautiful walks from the doorstep, with the Western edge of Exmoor National Park less than 2 miles away.

Combe Martin has 3 well stocked mini-marts, a butcher and friendly pubs serving good food. There are also a number of cosy cafes, tea-rooms and gift shops. There is a post office, library and small museum, plus a bank which opens on Tues & Thurs (please be aware - there is no cash point available but some shops offer cash-back and/or have ATM machines).

We are just 20 minutes drive from the beautiful coastal towns of Lynton and Lynmouth, connected by the famous Victorian funicular cliff lift. From Lynton there is an easy walk along the coast path to the spectacular Valley of the Rocks, with its herd of friendly feral goats.
