Car: necessary

Miles of sand are on offer. Thurso beach, a 5 minute drive away, may be small but it has a famous swell and hosts surfing championships. Dunnet has a vast expanse of sand backed by enormous dunes and Sinclair’s Bay on the east coast also seems to go on forever. The shell beach near John O’Groats is your best bet for finding the elusive cowrie shells once used as local currency and at the hidden gem Murkle you will find seals, mussels, tank traps and a brilliant blue bay.

Inverness Airport is approximately a 2 hour drive from the property and cars can be hired from the Airport. Alternatively, the sleeper train from London to Inverness offers an overnight service, again with car hire available at Inverness station, or onward trains to Thurso.

Thurso is just a mile from Holbornhead at the end of the bay at the mouth of the river Thurso. The thriving fishing port of Scrabster nestles at the bottom of the braes below Holbornhead. Scrabster is also the main ferry port for the Orkney islands with two sailings a day from the impressive new ferry terminal.

Further Details:

Thurso offers all the shops and services you could need from supermarkets and bakeries to restaurants and fishing shops. The thriving fishing port of Scrabster nestles at the bottom of the braes below Holbornhead. Scrabster is also the main ferry port for the Orkney islands with two sailings a day from the impressive new ferry terminal. Scrabster has two restaurants and a pub, but you might prefer to catch your own fish on one of the sea angling boats operating from the harbour, or buy your dinner from a commercial boat. The walking and wildlife in the area is superb with puffins visiting Dunnett Head from May to July, and a seal colony in Brough Bay. Our own farm at Holbornhead is a popular walk with its vast cliffs dropping into the Pentland Firth punctured by blow holes, known locally as gloups, and the spectacular sheer-sided stack called the Clett Rock.

Caithness has some of the best trout, salmon and sea fishing in Britain. There are dozens of lochs packed with wild brown trout available to fish. Salmon run the rivers of the north coast and the Wick which runs in from the east. The Thurso is the most famous Caithness salmon river and produces consistent annual catches. You can walk down from the bothy to Scrabster lighthouse and catch a mackerel for your breakfast, catch bass from Thurso beach or even fish for shark – the British record porbeagle was caught just off Dunnet Head. There are always charter boats operating from Scrabster harbour.

The history of Caithness is written across its landscape. You do not have to leave the farm to see the outline of the Viking fort on the very end of Holbornhead a short walk from the Bothy, the remains of the World War Two military posts placed on top of Holborn Hill to watch the Pentland Firth and the disused quarry which once supplied slate to all corners of the world.
