Cliburn Signal Box is a quirky, upside down, luxury holiday cottage. Once a working part of the Eden Valley Railway line, the Signal Box nestles at the bottom of Whinfell Forest, between the market towns of Penrith and Appleby, in the beautiful (but often forgotten) Eden Valley. It is the perfect location to relax, enjoy, explore and with very little light pollution it is just perfect for stargazing.

Notes on accommodation: Cliburn Signal Box uses an eco-friendly ground source heat pump to provide under-floor heating to all of the rooms and hot water to the bathroom and kitchen. Outside: The private garden has gravelled and grassed areas, barbeque, garden furniture and parking for two cars. Surrounded by fields you can be entertained by the ducks and chickens, whose eggs are available to buy. Utility Room: The utility room houses the freezer, washing machine, BBQ and a small amount of wood for the wood burning stove. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen & towels are provided and are included in the price. Both will be exchanged on a weekly basis. Cleaning is not provided.

The signal box is truly stunning to the property itself and the views and surroundings. Gavin and Wendy have renovated the signal box to the highest standard. The views from your seating area are stunning if you want complete relaxation this is the place to stay. We will definitely be returning

Cliburn Signal Box - Amazing place

On arrival at the Signal box we could tell from the external what wonderful looking Cottage and it did not disappoint. The interior has been renovated to a great standard with all the home comforts you could ask for especially the under floor heating and log burner.

Great communication from Gavin and Wendy the owners from originally booking the cottage to staying there and during the stay.

Overall we had a fabulous stay!

LOVELY

For the past few years we have been looking for and staying in unusual holiday lets. Some have not delivered and some have been brilliant and tick the " yes we will be back " box. Cliburn Signal box falls in to this group. It is in a great location, has everything you need and is an interesting building.The peace and quiet is amazing when sitting on the steps at night watching the stars, with a glass of wine to hand. Looking forward to our next visit!

Quirky property in rural setting

A very pleasant stay in a totally relaxed environment. The property was very well equipped for self catering and with excellent wifi allowing contact with the outside world if required. Within easy reach of the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales for day trips and adventures! Hosts Gavin and Wendy live nearby and are welcoming but discreet.

Happy place

The signal box was fabulous, smell of real wood as you walked into the kitchen was great. Every thing was clean and fresh. All the pots and pans there which any one would need. Crockery, there was plenty, except for what I would call soup bowls. All the electrical appliances where in great condition and up stairs in the lounge area was out of this world, so comfortably. Didn't use the log burning stove as the under floor heating kept us as warm as we wanted.

About Mr Gavin Matier

We moved into the property on 1st October 2004, leaving city life behind, in search of a more peaceful and fulfilling life, for both ourselves and our two children, Elliott and Jasmine.

Gavin, born in Northern Ireland, left Limavady in 1987 to study at Bradford University. There he qualified as a Pharmacist in 1991 and is the Pharmacy Manager at Sainsbury's Penrith.

Wendy, born in Tyldesley, Manchester left in 1989 to study at Bradford University. There she qualified as a Pharmacist in 1994 and is now the Pharmacy Manager at Green Tree Pharmacy, Kirkby Stephen.

Whilst working in Leeds, we met in 1992 and married 25th August 1996. In July 1999 Elliott was born and in February 2002 Jasmine was born. It was at this point we decided to leave the city life behind and moved to Cliburn.

Why Mr Gavin Matier chose Penrith

Wendy and I fell in love with both the location and character of the building when we first saw it.

We loved it so much we live in the Station House beside the Signal Box and decided to renovate it, so others could enjoy it as much as us.

What makes this cottage unique

We live beside the Signal Box all year round and often forget just how lucky we are to live here.

To us peace, tranquility and seclusion are the norm. We step outside our back door into beautiful countryside and a 50m walk has us strolling in Whinfell Forest, where we regularly see the local red squirrels, roe deer, owls, buzzards, pheasants, great crested newts and an abundance of other wildlife. At night little light pollution means that we can stargaze and if that wasn't enough, a short drive and we are walking up one of the many fells or playing in one of the lakes.

We stayed here for three nights just after New Year, and had a wonderful break. I kept the nature of the property a surprise for my wife, who couldn't believe it when we rolled up and discovered we were staying in a restored signal box. The owners have done an astounding job of doing it up. It's beautifully decorated and furnished, with amazing original features and attention to detail. There are lovely pubs a short drive away, and it's just half an hour from Ullswater, but even if you don't want to drive, the surrounding countryside is gorgeous, and the property itself is a wonderful place to relax.

We had a fantastic weekend break here with the kids. Location is within very easy reach of the Northern Lakes. The property itself is fantastic, has every facility needed and was a lovely place to stay.

The Signal Box is a perfect base for those wanting to explore the Lake District National Park. With Pooley Bridge only 9.5miles away and Blencathra only 19miles away.

Refundable Damage Deposit £100

Booking Notes:
Bookings can be made over the phone, by email or via our website.
A non-refundable 25% deposit is required to confirm any booking.
A refundable £100 good housekeeping bond is required. This will be used to cover any breakages, damage or excessive cleaning that may be caused during your stay.
All bookings must be fully paid for (including refundable bond) four weeks prior to arrival.
Arrival is after 4pm and departure by 10.30am.
Cancellations will follow the policy of the booking, however, where possible we will happily move a booking to more suitable dates.

Minimum Stay:
Minimum stay of three nights applies to weekend and mid-week stays, however, mid-week stays Monday to Friday (4 nights) will only be charged for a three night stay at applicable seasonal rate.

Changeover Days:
Prices are based on our Change Over Days being a Friday or a Monday, giving the option of weekly, weekend or midweek breaks. Although Change Over Days are not fixed, there may be additional charges if the guest wishes to arrive on days other than a Friday or a Monday.
Please contact Gavin or Wendy to discuss alternative change over days, options and rates.

Notes on prices:
Prices are for TWO people sharing the double bed. Additional guests are charged £5 per person per night.
Stays of a week or longer will be priced using the Seven day price, while stays of between three and seven days will be priced upon request.

Owner's Cancellation Policy

  • 100% refund for cancellations more than 60 days before check-in date.
  • Service Fee fully refunded on cancellations that qualify for 100% refund.
