About the property

Cottage in Sculthorpe, Fakenham, Norfolk, England - Peaceful Countryside Location, Within Easy Reach Of The Coast

Archway Cottage is a newly refurbished traditional cottage situated in the village of Sculthorpe, just 15 minutes drive from the coast. The cottage is warm and comfortable, with efficient gas central heating and the bonus of an open fire in the sitting room, which makes it very suitable for all year round visits. The Georgian market town of Fakenham has a traditional Thursday auction and market, and a great range of shops, situated only a few minutes' drive away. The Sculthorpe Nature Reserve, home to the Hawk and Owl Trust, is just a few minutes’ walk and Pensthorpe Wildlife and Gardens, the home of Spring watch in 2008-2010, is also close by.

A tranquil retreat

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at Archway Cottage and we had another fabulous holiday. The property is perfectly situated for exploring idyllic North and West Norfolk. The beautiful beaches at Brancaster and Wells-next-the-Sea are close at hand. Fakenham is a lovely market town only a mile away with a range of supermarkets and other shops. Sculthorpe Moor nature reserve is a must for bird watchers and is a short walk from the cottage. The cottage offers clean and comfortable accommodation and is a lovely place to relax at the end of the day. Spend a week here and you will return home completely refreshed and relaxed.

Great Location.

  • 3 of 5

This is a two bedroomed cottage located in North Norfolk and perfectly placed for visiting all the holiday spots in the area.It is a ten minute walk from Sculthorpe nature reserve which was an added bonus for us as we packed our back packs and spent a relaxing Sunday there. The cottage has everything you need to self cater for a week which we did ,choosing to eat out on one occasion only. There are six or seven very steep stairs to access the upstairs where there is a twin and double. We chose the twin room which was light and bright and the beds adorned with clean white linen. There is no shower in the bathroom and that was not an issue for us as we like to soak in the lovely spacious bath after a long days walking with a rubber shower attachment for hair washing, but judging from the visitor book comments a shower was wanted. It's an old cottage and I can not see where one could be installed. The cottage is let down by the very uncomfortable chairs /sofa in the lounge and the downstairs carpets/rugs need replacing/removing. The front door opens into the lounge so it must be difficult to keep them clean. It was nice that cleaning products/ towels etc were available as it saved us packing any. We stayed in mid June and found it to be good value for money.Sheringham park is a great place to walk, take the red route, a five miler to access the steam train and beach cliff tops. Head for Wells and walk along Lady Anne's walk to Holcombe and return along the beach. For a light bite head for Morrisons Cafe, two coffees, macaroni cheese, gammon egg and chips and two deserts came to £11. The food was excellent cafe food. Don't miss the Kinnerton chocolate factory shop in the Mall at Fakenham. Titchwell Marshes is a must for twitchers where on our visit a Great Knot had been spotted, a rare visitor from Siberia. Also great to access a very private part of the beach, free entry just pay the parking. Hunstanton for ice cream and drop down to the beach to view the cliffs. So much to see, North Norfolk has so much to offer.

A Handy Cottage for Sculthorpe Moor

  • 4 of 5

We booked this cottage because we were attending the Hawk and Owl Trust AGM and Members Weekend at Sculthorpe Moor. The cottage is within a few minutes walk of the reserve and also gives good access to the sea, other nature reserves, Walsingham and Fakenham.

We wanted to bracket this weekend within a weeks holiday Weds. to Weds. to fit in with our babysitting arrangements so having flexible booking arrangements was very helpful.

The cottage was clean and tidy.

The downstairs is a bit small but it was adequate for the two of us.

Some of the kitchen appliances were a bit complicated and we had to read a few instructions to cook things.

Upstairs is much more spacious and I used the chair and desk in the second bedroom to read/ study.

The touristic information /books provided in the cottage gave useful information on the area.

We used The Hourglass pub/restaurant ( Just along the road) on three occasions and food, beer and service were all excellent, though it is not cheap.

We would consider using this cottage again if doing something similar in the future.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your lovely review. I try to be as flexible as possible with booking arrangements, especially during the quieter times of the year, and am very pleased I was able to help. The Hawk and Owl Trust reserve makes a great walk from the cottage, with lots to see. As for my kitchen appliances, I agree about the oven - the symbols are not very self explanatory, that is why I have the printout on the notice board. I am having a new ceramic hob fitted next week which should be easier to use. I am glad you enjoyed your visit and I look forward to hearing from you again in the future.
