About the property

Couples getaway near Gweek, Cornwall, Superbly Placed For Day Trips, 10 Minutes To Lovely Beaches

Barn Cottage used to be an old cow and tractor barn, and guests tell us it has a very peaceful atmosphere. It stands on a lane in beautiful countryside, just a gentle ten minute stroll from Gweek at the head of the Helford River. It's a great place to unwind from the hurly-burly of life, with many gorgeous beaches and lovely walks close by, but is also ideally placed for touring this area of Cornwall: Falmouth, Truro, St Ives, and Penzance are all within easy reach. The cottage is welcoming and full of character, with views over lovely countryside. The bedroom is bright and airy with a comfy king size bed - we think good sleep is important on holiday! The open-plan living space features a big woodburner to keep you cosy, & painted wood floors. There is a single sofabed downstairs for an extra guest if needed. We keep many of our own books in the cottage, so you'll never be short of reading material, and there are games and jigsaws too, as well as a tv/dvd and a collection of great films to keep you busy all week! Barn Cottage is next door to (but very private from) the owner's house, where you will find the ancient and unique 'Tolvan Stone', dating from 4000 years ago. There are no other neighbours. We look forward to welcoming you to this special place.

About Juliet Welch

My husband Jon and I have lived at Tolvan Cross since leaving London in 1999. We moved to Cornwall on a whim when our kids were very young, and we've never really looked back. Tolvan Cross was the first house we looked at - once we'd been caught under its spell we didn't need to look at any more! We run our own theatre company: I am an actor and administrator, and Jon is a writer/director/musician.

Juliet Welch purchased this house in 1999

Why Juliet Welch chose Lizard Peninsula

We came on holiday to this area two years running when our children were very young, and loved it so much we moved here. There are so many beautiful spots around here - from bluebell woods to wooded creeks, grassy quays on the Helford River, and sandy beaches, glorious at sunset. Gweek itself is perfectly placed for access to the peace and quiet of the Lizard, and for getting to towns for a bit of civilisation! We feel very lucky to live here.

What makes this house unique

Our house has the Tolvan Stone in its back garden - a scheduled monument from the Iron Age. No-one really knows what its original purpose was, so it's endlessly fascinating. Everyone who visits has a different theory, although most people believe that it was originally linked to a burial mound in a nearby field. One man wrote to us afterwards convinced that 'what you have in your back garden is as important as Stonehenge or Giza'! Either way, it's a fabulous thing to live with.

Coast/Beach:

Our favourite beaches are Church Cove/Dollar Cove (NT) which are about a ten minute drive away, and are wonderful for catching the evening sun - take a barbecue with you and watch the sunset after everyone else has gone. Beautiful Kynance Cove (NT) is just 20 minutes drive, and there are loads of other hidden gems which we can direct you to. Even though we're on the south coast, the north coast beaches are very accessible too.

Travel:

Newquay is the nearest airport and is about 45 minutes away. Plymouth docks are about an hour and a quarter. Truro or Redruth are the nearest train stations - about 25 minutes away. Public transport from the village is very limited so I would say that use of a car is essential.

Distances:

Gweek village is half a mile down the road - a pleasant stroll. Helston (home of the Flora Dance) is 5 miles distant; Falmouth and the Maritime museum 9 miles; the Cathedral city of Truro 16 miles; Penzance, St Michaels Mount, and St Ives are all about a 35 minute drive. Many of Cornwall's best gardens are close by, or you can explore all of the Lizard, with its diverse landscape. In addition the moors of Penwith or the big north coast sandy beaches are very easy day trips. Eden Project 1hr.

Further Details:

We are five minutes drive (or 45 minutes stomp across fields) from award-winning pub the Trengilly Wartha. Gweek has a village pub too, the Black Swan, which does good pub grub and a nice pint. It also has a very good village shop/PO selling pretty much everything you could need. Helston (5 miles) is the nearest town with supermarkets and banks. Many of our past guests have arranged online grocery deliveries in advance. We can direct you to the many excellent restaurants close by, or any other facilities you require.

Notes:
Notes on accommodation: Barn Cottage has storage heating for morning warmth and a lovely, snuggly woodburning stove which heats the whole cottage. There is no other heat source so if you're not happy lighting fires please think twice before booking at cooler times of the year! Electricity is included, and logs are available at cost. The cottage has a very open-plan feel to it, with the bedroom upstairs being semi-mezzanine. This makes it very friendly to stay in, but if you want to use the sofabed downstairs for an extra guest please be aware that it may restrict your privacy. Having said that, we have had many visitors who have been very happy with the arrangements. Wi-fi At present there is no wi-fi in the cottage. You can access ours from the driveway or outside our house. You are welcome to come into our house to use it in emergencies. Good 4G coverage. Barn Cottage has its own private garden, with a table, chairs, and parasol. There are views over the countryside, and a barbecue. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Towels and linen are included, but please bring your own beach towels. The cottage is cleaned weekly before you arrive. The staircase is open-tread so take care with crawlers/toddlers. We can provide a stairgate. We ask you never to smoke inside the cottage and I'm sorry but we don't accept pets.

blissful

  • 5 of 5

We'd had a personal recommendation about the cottage and we were not disappointed at all. We spent our honeymoon there, a welcome oasis of calm and immersion in nature after the stress of the wedding. The cottage is 'home from home' and Oscar the very friendly cat was further stress relief. Juliet was the perfect host and a truly lovely, kind and generous person. The Helford River area was a delight, gazing at the boats from the ShipWrights Inn in Helford - we felt like we were in a different world. Gweek is so centrally located, perfect for day trips. We'd love to return and have recommended the cottage to family and friends. I can't imagine anyone not enjoying their stay at Barn Cottage. We'll be back for sure.

Lovely little cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely week in Cornwall. The cottage was very well equipped with lots of little extra touches that help to make your stay more comfortable, ( including a still warm cake on arrival!) The cottage is in an excellent place to visit this area of Cornwall. We went to Lizard point, Sennen Cove, Lands End, Truro, The Lost Gardens of Heligan, The Minnack Theatre, Portreath harbour, Coverack............

In Porthleven there is an excellent fish and chip shop ( Roland's happy plaice) and we would recommend a meal at Rick Steins fish restaurant too. (Also in Porthleven)

Beautifully tranquil

  • 5 of 5

Although a lovely place to hide away, Barn Cottage is also a good base from which to explore this part of Cornwall and The Lizard. You have the very best of both worlds close to hand - the wildness of the Lizard and its enchanting coves and the beautiful gentle landscapes of trees and hills around Gweek, Falmouth and the Helford estuary.

Barn Cottage is homely, arty and rustic and we fell in love with it instantly. My (very discerning) husband told me it was the best holiday home I had chosen! There was a welcoming home baked cake on the table, plus jug of milk and butter. We had all the facilities we required with lots of extra touches. The barn felt sheltered and we had the use of a small garden, plus a good parking space. I felt this property was loved, clean and well maintained.

I have to say that the bedroom was very spacious yet cosy and we had the best nights sleep we could ever wish for. If you want a place which is secluded but not completely isolated then Barn Cottage may be the place for you. The owners are close by, friendly but do not intrude on your privacy at all.

The owners provide good information on the area, right down to routes to the local supermarkets, recommended places to eat, etc. We would definitely recommend a trip to Kynance Cove - our first trip to this beautiful, natural and magical place. We also enjoyed a trip to The Lizard village nearby. There are many lovely coves (including Coverack and Mullion) around the Lizard and you can explore the length of the River Fal on boat trips with 1, 2 and 3 day price saver tickets. The Penzance/St Ives areas are not too far if you want to go a bit further, nor is St Austell. However, we enjoyed the beauty, wildness and tranquility of the local area. We were able to walk to the seal sanctuary at Gweek in just a few minutes. We will definitely return as there is much more to see.

Highly recommended! We would recommend to friends and family. The communication was excellent from our first contact to follow up email.
