About the Owner

Pat and Paul met at Ilford Palais in London in 1963, they retired early from college careers in 1997 and bought the property in 2001 which they then converted themselves. The property has been holiday let for 10 years. Paul's mother came from Cumbria and he spent his holidays as a child here and recalls sunshine, pushing cars up hills and near traffic free roads. Pat is artistic singing with an excellent local choir and acting as treasurer of Keswick Society of Arts. We have two children, a son who owns a local estate agency and daughter who is a social worker in the south. Three grandchildren enrich our lives.

From the time we got into the cottage my wife was like a child in a sweetshop-it was just how she imagined an English cottage to be! We had a great rest with some lovely walks and trips. Cooks

We've had a lovely week, the cottage is cosy. We particularly enjoyed watching the various birds come and go on the feeder. Our first family holiday in the Lake District and our 3 year old enjoyed climbing his first mountain. Going home feeling refreshed and relaxed, Thank you. Wadsworths.

Thank you for your warm welcome and the cosy atmosphere of the cottage. We have had a most enjoyable stay, we are going home with beautiful weather which we have enjoyed here this week. The views around here are breathtaking and we hope to be able to come again! Robertsons.

This was a last minute booking and we have had a comfortable stay. Plenty of walks within easy reach- no need to take the car in most cases. Bus services are excellent. Robinsons

Perfect Cottage, Perfect Location.

Absolutely loved our stay. The cottage is cosy and warm with all you need to enjoy your stay. We often travel to the lakes and look for locations that are close enough for local shops and amenities but just off the beaten track,this was perfect, even ate at the cottage two nights as we didn't feel like going out. Lovely!

THE SHIELING

This was my first real holiday in the Lake District, although my partner Dean knows the Lakes very well as he has been there several times, as he originally comes from Sunderland!

We travelled from Gloucester to be in this beautiful part of England, and chose The Shieling as it seemed to be just what we wanted for our week long getaway, and reasonably priced too! We were nt disappointed! As soon as we got to this lovely cottage, we both realised that we had made a good choice. Its lovely warm and cosy atmosphere was just what we wanted and in a perfect location. Its proximity to the road was great for getting away to all the lovely places we visited while we were there , and yet we were nt aware of the main road once inside!

There is a lovely small garden around the cottage and pretty views from the bedroom and living room windows! The accommodation is well set out and with lovely comfortable furniture, which made our stay even better.

The little touches like a personal greeting from Paul was most thoughtful, as was the welcome hamper with milk, bread, wine and biscuits! Also there were some toiletries, and other items there for us. There are lots of maps, and helpful literature around the place which would help anyone to find their way around the area.

I would highly recommend this cottage, especially if you re a couple hoping to get away from it all as its so peaceful, but very handy for getting to different areas of the Lakes.

All in all we had a great holiday and if we are lucky enough to come back to The Lakes again, we will definately be booking The Shieling!

beautiful week in a cosy place

The house we stayed in was very complete, with attention for little details; we had a warm welcome, with a bottle of wine, bread, some chocolate etc. 4 stars!!!

There is only one thing we felt sorry for: it is located along a pretty busy road; during the day is was quite noisy, during the night is was okay. That is the only reason I give it a rate of three stars.

Inevitably there is a trade off between facilities: theatre, cinema, pubs etc especially in season and being disturbed by nothing more than skylarks and bleating sheep. Thank you for mentioning that the night is 'okay'. We would recommend the eastern and western valleys for a quiet stay - best of luck next time. Paul L

We wanted a property we could restructure and equip as an attractive holiday cottage if possible with good views. This we have found and many hundreds have appreciated the property over the years.

Nearest Airport : manchester or newcastl;e at 160 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : Twa Dogs at 0.3 Kilometres Nearest Golf : Keswick at 8 Kilometres Nearest Train : Penrith at 25 Kilometres Nearest Motorway : M6 at 25 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : Many at 1 Kilometres Nearest Beach : St Bees at 50 Kilometres

Coast/Beach:

20 miles to the Cumbrian coast.

Travel:

Nearest airport: Manchester 2 hours away with a direct train service from the airport to either Penrith/ Windermere from where a direct bus service or taxi can be taken. Newcastle is about the same distance. Otherwise by M6 to Penrith and A66 to Keswick or the scenic route from S. Lakes turn to Windermere, Grasmere and on to Kesiwck.

Distances:

Keswick town centre is a little over a km with the railway footpath into town several hundred metres. The Twa Dogs is 400 metres. Derwentwater 2 km. Grasmere 20km and Windermere 30km. The City of Carlisle is just over 40km. A rich heritage of National Trust properties, lakes, mountains, tarns, woods make this for many, the perfect holiday destination.

Keswick has been consistently voted one of the best holiday destinations in the UK. It has beautiful parks with every facility: tennis, bowling, golf, gardens with fantastic views and a lake promenade with a regular launch service on the lake. it has a cinema, theatre with 6 shows a week in summer and a literary, beer, jazz and mountain festival. All the mountains are climbable in a day by easy or more demanding routes and mountain biking is superb with the rivers providing canoeing. Eskdale narrow gauge railway, Go Ape at Whinlatter and underground tours at Honister slate quarry.

  • Notes on accommodation: No pets or smoking. Road is quiet at night with through lorries banned and owners have installed effective noise reduction glazing. Outside: Garden (200sq. metres) laid to lawn (or being Keswick, a nice mix of moss and other green growth). A magnolia and giant cherry tree, (whose blossom in spring is prodigious) dominate the patio with table and chairs. Off road parking on the driveway outside the garage. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The property is made up for your arrival and includes towels. Beds are changed after one week. Other: Lobby with large cupboard containing iron etc. and additional storage space.
