About the property

House in Chittoe, Nr. Lacock, Chippenham, Wiltshire, England - Luxurious Accommodation Within Easy Reach Of Many Historic Towns And Villages

The Coach House is a unique detached former coaching house and set within the grounds of our home at The Old Vicarage. Surrounded by open fields and woodland, with fabulous views to the Marlborough Downs, perfect for long walks and total relaxation. The huge living space (30ft x 16ft), with kitchen area at one end, wood burning stove at the other; comfy sofas and chairs to relax in, table and chairs for dining. An enormous glass window replaces the original entrance allowing the sun to flood the room with light and enhance the view of the original cobbled court yard. Downstairs there is also a study room with single French day bed; separate loo & stone sink. The huge Master bedroom with Superking size double bed, en-suite bathroom and French windows opening onto balcony. Large twin bedroom with en-suite shower/wet room also with balcony. Lie in bed, watch the sunrise and in the evening, the moon appear over the beautiful Wiltshire countryside.

The property is ideally situated near the Georgian City of Bath with all it's stunning architecture, history, wonderful shops and restaurants including the famous Polly Lunn Tea Rooms, one of the oldest buildings in Bath. The National Trust Village of Lacock is a ten minute drive where you can visit the Fox Talbot Photography Museum and the Abbey where scenes from Harry Potter were filmed. Lacock was also the location for films including Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, and the ever popular television series Downton Abbey to name but a few. The George Inn dates back to 1361 and has a wonderful open log fire as does the Red Lion. The ancient English Heritage Sites of Stonehenge and Avebury are within striking distance and not to be missed. Our local market town of Devizes is home to the Caen Hill flight of canal locks, the longest in the country as well as a beautiful market square which hosts a weekly market and monthly Farmers Market as well as some unique pubs and shops.

Bowood House, set in gardens designed by Capability Brown, with its' International Golf Course and renowned children's Adventure play ground is only a few minutes drive and the medieval Great Chalfield Manor and gardens another delight. While staying at The Coach House, guests can enjoy use of the tennis court, relax by the outdoor pool set within it's own walled garden, and make use of the BBQ and outdoor eating area.

About Mrs Fiona M Dodson

We have lived in Chittoe for 27 years and brought up our five children here - well almost! I am an enthusiastic cook and offer delicious home made cakes for tea on arrival, as well as a pot of jam hopefully made with fruit from the garden. Muffins are a particular favourite!

Why Mrs Fiona M Dodson chose Wiltshire

We bought the property in 1985 wanting to create my vision of a proper family home. Moving every two years or so as a child, hadn't given me 'wanderlust' but the desire to 'belong'. Our children have been so lucky to have been brought up in this idyllic countryside with ponies, chickens and sheep, plus my husbands lust for old tractors and machinery!

With the kids now largely grown up we decided to renovate the Coach House from being a work shop, tractor home and hay barn with tiny flat above to a more stylish set up. Our plans evolved as we went along with the original plans being done by our son now an engineer. With huge input from all members of the family we now have a wonderful property so others can also enjoy this idyllic location.

What makes this house unique

The views from the bedroom windows and balconies are spectacular. The property is set with in the grounds of our home and surrounded by open fields and woodland. Perfect for walking and biking. We offer use of our tennis court, repainted this year and the swimming pool which is to be re-lined March 2016..

It is also perfectly situated for visiting many ancient sites such as Avebury and Stonehenge; the Georgian City of Bath and towns such as our local town of Devizes with its' market square, unique shops, pubs and cafes as well as the famous canal and stunning Cane Hill flight of locks.

Bowood House offers an international Golf course and Spa as well as fabulous fine dining, only a couple of miles away.

Charming, comfortable English idyll

  • 5 of 5

Coming from Australia, and joining with family from the US, the Coachouse answered all of our ideas of the quintessential English house set in the most beautiful English countryside.

The house was roomy, well appointed and comfortable (especially the beds), and the hosts, Fiona and Matthew, were just so accommodating...nothing we asked was too much trouble!

The location too was stunning...green fields, lovely gardens, swimming pool, tennis court, the list goes on, and all so close to English landmarks such as Bath, the White Horse, the village of Laycock and innumerable classic English pubs. We really couldn't have asked for more.

Beautiful house & location and great for children

  • 5 of 5

We all enjoyed staying in The Coach House. We have two young boys (8&5) and they loved playing in the grounds and swimming pool (and making friends with the dog!). The owners were very welcoming and the wine & blueberry muffins on arrival were a nice touch. We liked the location, it was quiet and there was plenty to see and do locally. The house was extremely clean and comfortable. Great service. We would definitely recommend this to others.

Lovely Accomodation, Welcome and Surroundings

  • 5 of 5

My wife, 2 kids and I stayed at the Coach House for a week and had a great stay. We had a lovely warm welcome from Fiona. The house has a lovely feel to it with lots of original features. You are made to feel very much at home, use of the pool was brilliant and the kids loved walking through the fields of sheep to feed the pigs. Lots of good, fun trips locally too to keep the kids amused. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing family trip.

An impressive holiday cottage with a warm welcome.

  • 5 of 5

The Coach House provides impressive holiday accommodation, with everything you could want for your holiday. As soon as you open the door the quality of fixtures and fitting is obvious. The bedrooms are very comfortable, with generous en suite facilities. Downstairs there is everything you could wish for to make your stay comfortable.

The outside space is idyllic for children. The swimming pool and pool room provided hours of fun and the gardens are lovely.

The situation of the cottage is very convenient for days out. We visited Laycock Abbey and village, Stonehenge, Bath, Salisbury and Avebury to name a few.

Finally, Fiona and Matthew were very welcoming, ready to offer advice and local information. The freshly baked muffins and home made jam provided on arrival were also very much appreciated....and quickly demolished!

Super spot!

  • 5 of 5

Just back from a brilliant week at The Coach House! It was the perfect place for an 'easy' holiday with our young children (3 and almost 2). Loved the sheep, pigs, friendly dogs and two vintage tractors - lots to keep everyone happy. Enjoyed a swim in the super pool - a real sun trap and I was really surprised how warm it was. The house is really lovely and Fiona and Matthew made us all feel very welcome. Homemade muffins, Jam and a bottle of wine were all much appreciated too! Loads to do in the area - bath, lacock, Bowood and lots more we didn't even get to doing. Always next time! Thank you!!
